KHNH for four international film festivals
By Our Correspondent ©2004 Bollyvista.com

Yash Johar's 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' is slated for screenings at four major international film festivals - Berlin, Moscow, France and Shanghai. Karan Johar will be travelling along with director Nikhil Advani from early February to attend the screenings at the respective festivals also as part of a networking exercise.

That's ridiculous. So many other films are so much more deserving for international acclaim than this. When I first watched the movie, I thought it was ok, but now looking back on it, I start to dislike it more and more.

Again I'm in the minority here but I love this picture. I personally think it's the best film I saw in 2003, either Western or Indian. I guess I'm just a big fan of super-glossy tearjerker love triangle pics like this one. Ah well. I can see why it's traveling to all those festivals. This flick appeals more to a Western audience, esp. with the NYC setting.

In retrospect, KHNH is intelligently(should have used the word CRAFTILY here, since i started the post with 'intelligently' and there have been couple of posts after that, lemme leave it in) put together (not to be confused with 'being intelligent' however!).....it has too much in common with the big movies Hollywood studios produce....starcast, crisp dialogues, snazzy screenplay, dollops of emotion.....dont such movies make truckloads of money at the box office in the US (and worldover)?

The Johars and the Chopras are aspiring to be what the studios are and in keeping with that ambition, they are producing products, that are hardly different from each other, just smartly worded to appeal to the audience taste of the day....by no means are they memorable....but then can we blame them completely? Largely the Indian audiences seek escapist fare and what the market demands the manufacturers fulfill....simple economics 101.....as the Indian audience matures (as in economically) and moves up notches intellectually, will we see the really good movies becoming hits....otherwise just imagine desi audiences even trying to appreciate a MAQBOOL, scratching their heads as they troop out of theaters and saying 'aur woh doh policewaale kya kar rahe the?'..... :p (you know I would absolutely LOVE to be proven wrong here !!!)

sorry it has been a cynical Friday so far.....

Dont get me wrong...i am not condoning what these guys are putting out, but trying to understand and hence explain why they perhaps do it!!!

Without doubt they are into film making for profiteering. Without doubt they care less for what films can do to your souls than to their own pockets...i am trying to draw a parallel here with routine manufacturers and them....its wrong to think of the Chopras and Johars as artistes...they are NOT. The are vendors, sophisticated yes, but ultimately not too different from neighbourhood grocers, making a living any which way they can, vending whatever the public will buy !!

So unless the paying public rejects every product of theirs (which there is a little chance of happening) these guys will continue to put out the same trash.....albeit in nice wrappers, with tons of flavourings......overseas desis are the biggest culprits of encouraging such rubbish....everytime there is a new release the only thing they look for is the same old thing....efforts like MAQBOOL or TEEN DEEWAREIN go without even being given a chance.......its a social problem really...unless the paying audience matures (and what are we as zulmis doing to help that even?), these bollywood mafioso will always rule....its a sad state of affairs but a true state....

like I said, its been a bad Friday morn

What else is new these days besides copying Hollywood? Do we even have a style of our own in India? :hmm:

I think KHNH was refreshing. It's good to see Bollywood do what it does best - at its best. I am surprised that its making it to foreign film festivals though as I don't see how it would appeal to serious film buffs.

Kal Ho Naa Ho is time pass movie, just putt the little scoop of emotions with little taste of cancer makes many movies Hit Wonder Why! :kungfu:

I think Baghban is way better than Kal Ho Naa Ho and many other are, since baghban is something different (well Little)but kal ho naa ho is same :ffs: :baaa:

And International Awards!! I don't think they even should get a National Award :p It's not bad movie but it's not worth for awards anyway.

Compare Lord Of the Ring Triology and Compare Our Indian Movies with Thirdclass Effects.

yes forgot to say, I like Kal Ho Naa Ho movie nice script, songs, cast but it's still not :ffs: for Awards!

I think for a Western audience, the appeal of Bollywood may lie in how different the film genre's style is from Hollywood. Many of the things that are typical in the standard Bwood movies such as the love triangles, the polished and overly choreographed musical numbers, the shameless emotion, et al. are elements that are unique. Now compare something like, say The Wedding Planner, to a standard Bwood movie and you can really see the difference. I always feel that a lot of Hollywood romance movies don't go to the lengths at trying to entertain its audience as Bwood does. KHNH also has an urban setting as well and I do think that western audiences who want to see something different would certainly have an interest in Bollywood output.

People worldwide can see heavy special effects blockbusters like Lord of the Rings anyday, but flicks like KHNH are really refreshing in contrast. I think it's easy to dismiss the Chopra/Johar formula as simplistic and only made as cash cows. Sure, you can also say that they are formulaic with familiar storylines. However, their films are far more complex emotionally with rich scriptwriting, direction and impressive production values. Part of what works is the commitment of the filmmakers to the material that they're presenting and I feel that the K3Gs or the KHNHs display that sincerity.

By the way, I do agree that Teen Deewarein is quite good and should be shown in more fests. The "alternative" Bollywood cinema has lately gotten a lot of press and I'll be interested in seeing what kinds of films continue to come down the pike. I know I'm going to get stones thrown at me but I did like Boom, in this case b/c of how the film was committed at playing with those "stereotypes" of what we expect.
