Karan Johar's songless thriller

By Taran Adarsh, January 14th, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

More exclusive info – this time on Karan Johar's new production, to be directed by his erstwhile assistant Soham Shah.

As we all know by now, KAL HO NAA HO was directed by Karan's erstwhile assistant Nikhil Advani. Well, one more assistant of Karan turns independent with Dharma Productions' new film, which will be a songless thriller.

Soham Shah, who assisted him in K3G, besides designing the publicity layouts of the film, will handle the directorial reins of Karan's new untitled venture, which will star three heroes and two heroines. At the moment, talks are on with Ajay Devgan to enact the principal lead. As for the remaining two heroes, Karan has approached John Abraham and Shahid Kapur.

“Let me clarify, Ajay hasn't heard the script yet. In fact, no actor has been given a script narration yet,” Karan tells me, “The star cast should be finalised by the month-end once we discuss the script, dates, money…”

It seems, the idea to make a songless film was suggested by Soham and endorsed by Karan. “Given the kind of story we are attempting, incorporating songs in the film will only hamper and disturb the otherwise smooth narrative. That's why we decided against having songs,” Karan states.

However, the project won't roll before October this year, he adds. Though the film hasn't been titled yet, Karan says the story and screenplay have been penned by Soham, not by him [Nikhil Advani's KAL HO NAA HO was scripted by Karan]. “It's Soham's baby all the way. He has worked on the script for almost a year now,” Karan smiles.
