The title of this thread suggest films from all parts of India. But unfortunate for me, I haven't been exposing myself to many of them out there beyond Bollywood. That said, if other's here do expose themselves to more cinema beyond Bollywood and do indeed find greatness in them, by all means, list them. Such films need to be noticed and not necessarily hidden.

1. Dil Chahta Hai (dir: Farhan Akhtar)
2. Lagaan (dir: Ashutosh Gowariker)
3. Kannathil Muthamittal (dir: Mani Ratnam)

5. Monsoon Wedding (dir: Mira Nair)
6. Company (dir: Ram Gopal Verma)

I'll offer my own Top Ten here (I don't think I have the energy to compile a twenty list).

DVD Collector, that is a solid list. I don't think Dil Chahta Hai deserves to be at #1 at all, but I can understand why you would put it there. It's a masterpiece compared to the other crap we are subjected to currently.

1. Zubeidaa (Shyam Benegal)
2. Monsoon Wedding (Mira Nair)
3. Lagaan (Ashutosh Gowariker)
4. Alai Payuthey (Mani Ratnam)
5. Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (Aparna Sen)
6. Devdas (Sanjay Leela Bhansali)
7. Chandni Bar (Madhur Bhandarkar)
8. Mission Kashmir (Vidhu Vinod Chopra)
9. Company (Ram Gopal Varma)
10. Kannathil Mutthamital (Mani Ratnam)

Artistically speaking, Dil Chahta Hai did more for me, than any other Indian film I've seen since the beginning of the new century. It was refreshing, poignant, creatively conceived and equally executed.

It kind of fell apart at the end, but I know what you mean. The characterizations and dialogues were all very refreshing. It's always good to see an older actress like Dimple in a role other than a mother (even though she was a mother, that wasn't the point of her role).

Other terrific films:

Bawandar
Kutty (Tamil)

I totally agree, it's one of the better movies of the last few years. Just not one of the best, IMO. :)

Anyone see Lord of the Rings yet? I think ROTK is one of my favourite movies ever now... Excuse me while I close my eyes and relive the experience...

I completely overlooked Sen's Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, this was definitely one of the sweetest Indian movies of recent times. I've edited my list.
