Bachchan charged with mosquito breeding

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2003 12:29:41 AM ]

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has slapped a notice on megastar Amitabh Bachchan for breeding mosquitoes.

The notice was recently sent to Bachchan’s residence in Gulmohar Park after discovering that the place was a ‘‘breeding ground’’ for mosquitoes. His residence is just one of the 1,500 households who have been sent notices by the MCD.

‘‘We have sent notices to all those houses that were found to be a breeding ground and this included Bachchan’s Gulmohar Park residence,’’ Dr K N Tiwari, MCD’s medical health officer said. Other high-profile offenders include the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), ESI Hospital and Sucheta Kriplani Hospital, he said.

This is part of the anti-malaria drive that MCD launched in July as part of an annual exercise. The corporation claims to have checked 4 lakh houses in the south zone of which 1,500 households were given notices, while 1000 were prosecuted.

Zonal level officials have been doing the rounds of houses checking them for infrequently used cooler tanks, stagnant water and unused pots and utensils. Usually a notice is given only after a first time verbal warning. If caught in the third instance the offender is charged a fine of Rs 500 that should be paid to the zonal magistrate. Checks are conducted every 10-15 days.

The drive started in July and according to Tiwari, the incidence of mosquito breeding has been higher this year. ‘‘The heavy monsoon and moderate temperature and humidity usually encourage mosquito breeding increasing the danger of malaria,’’ Dr Tiwari said.

MCD has found higher incidence of mosquitoes in areas like Defence Colony, East Guru Angad Nagar in Shahdara south, Khanpur near Mehrauli, Vijay Vihar in Rohini, Malikpur in Civil Lines, DCM Railway Colony, Jamuna Vihar, Sanjay Amar Colony and Subroto Park.
