KMG: Raves in India, rants in USA

Arthur J Pais | August 12, 2003 12:01 IST

Despite the hype, Koi... Mil Gaya became an orphan in North America, earning less than $300,000 in three days and occupying 29th place on the box office chart.

The film's disappointing showing despite hype by Yash Raj Films proved that Rakesh Roshan as a director has not been able to create waves in North America, unlike Subhash Ghai, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sooraj Barjatya.

Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai wrote box office records across India and made Hrithik Roshan a huge star. But it was a hardly a charmer in North America.

On the other hand, Ghai's much maligned Yaadein opened with a mighty $650,000 in North America and earned over $1.2 million while Barjatya's Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, which was much reviled in India, went on to earn a decent $1.35 million in North America.

Both films toplined Hrithik Roshan.

Three films by desi filmmakers were found among the top 30 weekend grossers, with varying results.

While Koi... Mil Gaya played on 55 screens grossing $274,000 gross, the Ismail Merchant-produced Le Divorce, directed by James Ivory, got off to a promising start, grossing $516,000 with just about 34 screens.

Gurinder Chada's Bend It Like Beckham, a certified hit, proved disappointing in its wide release. Chadha's film was at No 14 while Merchant's bittersweet love story revolving around two American sisters in Paris was at No 20. Both films were released by Fox Searchlight.

Koi... Mil Gaya lived upto the apprehension of many desis who feared the film was an amalgam of many American sci-fi films, a point stressed by The New York Times' Anita Gates who ridiculed the film in sentence after sentence in a 400-450 long review.

If the usual pattern of box office decline for Hindi movies holds for Koi... Mil Gaya, it could earn a paltry - in view of the film's big budget - $700,000.

Chadha's Bend It earned less than $1 million, losing nearly 48 per cent of the previous weekend's box office. With $30 million already grossed, the film could be around for a few more weeks. Its unprecedented expansion from about 150 screens to over 1,100 did not fetch stellar results.

In about two weeks, Merchant's Le Divorce the movie could be playing on more than 100 screens. It could eventually reach 800-900 screens.

Many top publications, including The New York Times slammed the film, but the widely circulated San Francisco Chronicle and Rolling Stone magazine gave it near rave reviews. The film weighs not only the cultural differences between Americans and the French but also examines how issues such as infidelity and divorce affect the two American sisters and their French lovers in different ways.

While Jonathan Foreman called the film based on Diane Johnson's international bestseller 'deeply disappointing' in New York Post, in The New York Times A O Scott called it 'a thin and unsatisfying concoction.'

The movie, starring Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts, was reportedly made for $10 million.

In Rolling Stone, Peter Travers called it 'a romantic comedy of true sophistication' while San Francisco Chronicle's Edward Guthmann said, (James) Ivory's direction is so polished and smooth and full of smart observations that I never found my attention lagging.'

In USA Today, Claudia Puig took a middle ground: "a tasty bonbon, initially appealing but not terribly satisfying.'

I saw the movie KMG, with KIDS!!

Here are my impressions..FOR E.T Lovers..It is a TERRIBLE/STUPIFIED Film, Using ALIEN to SUPPORT HRITHIK..

THis FILM is a HRITHIK FILM, not ALIEN/ET film..ET has been used to support Hrithik, like every one else in the film..

Jadoo..THE E.T..Man..come on, He loos like a bLUE SHARK, with FEATURES resembling to JOHNY LEVER, He WALKS/TALKS/LAUGHS like HUMANS.

He has 2 THUMBS like HRITHIK..? Did u GUYS pay attention to INTERVAL?

He LOOKS like BLUE ,PLASTIC FISH, with PRISTINE/SPARKLING, SHOW ROOM FINISH on him, and BEST COSTUME of the YEAR AWARD!! Damn it..

Kahan..E.T and Kahan JADOO/TOONA!!

So, For E.T lovers..It is a DISGRACE!

NOW, for INDIAN VIEWERS, who DONT have any AFFILIATION with E.T it is AVERAGE to GOOD film, of HRITHIK, with KIDS /Jadoo etc etc

come on..where you guys really expecting to see another ET? comparing Koi Mil Gaya to ET is a waste of time. I haven't seen the movie yet but i know expecting something great from rakesh roshan is pointless. I'm glad the movie did well for hrithik & preity. both needed a hit badly.

IMHO, Khiladi..KMG, as a MASALA Film was not AS GOOD AS KNPH( that was orig not the master peace either)

as a SCIENCE FICTION..given any days..I'll prefer Mr. India over KMG!

KMG, the WHOLE E.T Plot is dealt like BHAGWAN SHANKAR came to EARTH(lIfe) to give..MAHA SHAKTI to HRITHIK, and NOT A BIG DEAL for ENTIRE UNIVERSE..E.T aate haen, E.T jaate haen..Hrithik, Fir Bhi Stupid Re jaata hai..

I dont deny..it not be MASALA FLICK, with HRITHIK, DANCING/SHOWING HIS MUSCLES..AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE..Whether he is STUPID or SHAKTIMAN..those 2 songs, AELA AELA, and CLUB SONG by TAZ STEREO NATION were Just to show STRAPLESS, Babes in SKIMPY OUT FITS to GIVE company to HRITHIK..while he is trying to shake to T..

In the other song, he WEARS, ZANANA KAPDE with NEKLACES!!

ON the OTHER HAND..PREITY's SKIMPY OUT FITS...beats me!!

Roshan SR. was SHOWING, SENSUAL/SEXY Side of PREITY to LURE/SUPPORT/IMPROVE BUDHI of HRITHIK or SENSATIVE SIDE?????

I BET she would still looked GOOD if Dressed like DHT..

REKHA/PREITY were their to SUPPORT..HRITHIK..REKHA's role, does not justiofy an ACTRESS of her CALIBRE..she, impresses more in DHT or even in 5 minutes role in BHOOT..IMHO..

PREITY is GOOD, She looks good/acts good..But again, she did not have to DO MUCH, besides wearing SKIMPY OUT FITS..
Any, NEW COMER with SKIMPY OUTFITS would have been able to do that role under Roshan's supervision, like AMISHA in KNPH! Preity and Rekha were CHOSEN for FACE VALUE of the FILM..Period..

NOw...Film, is SIMPLE, MASALA, DANCE, PREITY, HRITHIK, JADOO, whether he would be ALIEN or NEMO fish, would be enough to please MASSSES! and IT DOES!

HRITHIK..DID HIS PART VERY VERY WELL>>I agree..as a HANDICAPED/IDIOT..BUT Just compare him, with ANIL KAPOOR in ESHWAR..and then TELL ME?

He will be NOMINATED..Yes..Besides, SALMAN for TERE NAAM>>

MUSIC..was NO GREAT SHAKES either...but GENERALLY FITTED well, except, 2 songs, EILA Eila and ITS MAGIC!!

NOW..From Here..after KNPH..HRITHIK was doing same kinda roles, till now..

NOW, after this, WILL HE ACT LIKE A STUPID IN ALL FILMS and LOOK FOR SHAKTI from some where ELSE>>

I did say, OVER ALL, as MASS PLEASING FLICK with GOOD PERFORMANCE by HRITHIK, and FACE VALUABLE PRESENCE OF REKHA AND PREITY..I rate KMG as above average to GOOD>>7-7.5/10
