If you thought DARNA MANA HAI was an innovative experiment, watch out for the sequel of the film. Ramgopal Varma, the man behind the film, has already announced its Part II, titled DARNA ZAROORI HAI.

But Ramu is not going to take it easy this time around. ''We're inviting stories from people this time, instead of hiring script writers to pen the stories. We're urging people through the media to send us stories and we'll choose the six best ones for our film. Each story that gets selected will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1 lac, besides getting a credit in the film's titles," Ramu tells me.

Ramu continues, ''I want to continue with the 'Darna' series. I intend making it a brand. I hope to release at least two DARNA films every year." Interestingly, DARNA ZAROORI HAI will not be directed by just one director. "Each story in the film would be directed by one director, which means six directors will be associated with the film," he divulges.

Ramu admits that a few stories in DARNA MANA HAI did not strike a chord with the audiences. ''There won't be any 'apple' kind of stories this time. There won't be any wacky stories either. Since the title is DARNA ZAROORI HAI, every story would scare the daylights out of you," he divulges.

Any updated news on Ram Gopal Varma's 'Darna Zaroori Hai'? I read somewhere that he had discontinued his plans on producing this movie??
I loved Varma's 'Darna Mana Hai' and hoped to see a continuation of this type of 6 stories in one in the horror genre.

Someone had the same idea and at the very same moment Indiafm posts tons of info on "Darna Zaroori Hai".

it looks like ramu is turning this into the bollywood version of 3 extremes...

Darna Interesting Hai

Raja Sen

This is a dodgy assignment. Imagine reviewing a horror film without giving anything away. Not really that hard if you watch your step, right? Now think of reviewing seven scary shorts, each with its own set of characters and twists where even a three-line summary of the story is bound to contain a spoiler, or at least a hint of one. So this piece you're reading now must be more overview than review, something that skirts around the stories and stays in the shadows.

It's possible I may have my facts wrong here -- feel free to write in and correct me -- but I think Darna Zaroori Hai marks a first for Indian cinema. It's our first real Portmanteau film, an anthology of stories in the same film, directed by different directors.

Zaroori features seven such filmmakers tied together by the theme of fear, each experimenting with an independent section and hoping they tie together well enough.

This is intended to create an interesting feel to the film, each director with his own style bringing an inconsistency to the film, while blending into the overall scheme of things. This difference, however, isn't as starkly visible in Zaroori, with almost all the filmmakers being Ram Gopal Varma protégés, and hence obviously schooled in shadows and sound effects.

Ramu himself leads the pack, comprising Sajid Khan, Prawal Raman, Vivek Shah, Jijy Philip, Chekeravarthy, and Manish Gupta, and the overall effect is polished, low-budget, and occasionally too dark but slick enough to not complain -- run of the Factory (Ram Gopal Varma's office) stuff.

Is it spine-chillingly scary? No, but it can make you jump. Bounding with horror-film clichés -- graveyards, rain, spooky old women, séances, hitchhikers -- Zaroori determinedly breaks away from Hindi film convention by giving you a twist more than you're used to, each time. The dialogues are sharp and often cheeky, and while the film is often extremely predictable once you get used to the twist-pattern (or was I just having a prescient night?), it does manage to conjure up some seriously scary moments. And can be satisfyingly abrupt.

The film boasts of an all-star cast, and they deliver, almost unfailingly. Amitabh Bachchan is simply brilliant in his part of the film, showing us, in those brief minutes on screen, what pure performance is all about. The always-natural Riteish Deshmukh balances him superbly in the best episode of the lot, obviously directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The maestro's fine-tuned hand shows impeccable restraint and great technique. (Sajid's episode comes second, in my book, but lets not begin ranking the directors here!)

Manoj Pahwa is magnificent, and it's impossible not to warm up to him. Mallika Sherawat does a strong job, and Anil Kapoor is predictably fine, not to mention hilarious. Sonali Kulkarni is given nothing, but is powerfully expressive, Rajpal Yadav simply rocks, and Makarand Deshpande proves again that we should see him a lot more often. Bipasha Basu, unsurprisingly, looks gorgeous.

The old women, especially the genial one from the Ayurvedic Concepts commercials, the five annoying little kids (with the insane pluck only seen in horror films), and Arjun Rampal let the film down considerably. Not to mention the awful song -- though the background music sampling is authentically funny during the end credits -- and Nisha Kothari. And I personally felt the end was a massive anticlimax.

Zaroori opens with humour and normality, throws in macabre twists, suggestions that what is to fear most is fear itself, some loose ends, and even a bit of moralising. For the most part, this works. Again, this is not a hardcore horror film, and the frightening moments pass soon enough -- but the fact that the unexpected can catch you off guard is quite fun. At any rate, it's far better than Darna Mana HaiM, and most of the tripe running in theatres next door.

Even if you don't scare at all, you can rest assured that -- be it merely because of the format -- this film cannot bore you.

should I watch the first one to appreciate the new one? I don't think I'll have to time catch the first one. It's been less than a week since this movie released, and the local indian theater already moved the film to a shittier screen

the first one was terrible yuvan dude, it is good that you have not seen it :) but ya this one is definitely worth checking out in theatres, and you don’t need to watch the first to understand anything in this

though the sajid khan intro segment does make some references to the first… but it is pretty self explanatory

ok. I watched this movie last night. I spent 3 hours driving. 2 hours there, 1 hour return. I was initiallly really angry about the traffic. I ended up missing the 5 o'clock show because of traffic. so I spend the next 3 hours eating dinner at a local desi restaurant, whilst waiting for the 8pm show.

I walked into the desi theater. there were a pack full of gults at the theater for the new popular film "Pokiri". Then I walked into the room where they screened Darna. My mom and I were the ONLY people in the huge theater hall! lmao. I was expecting low turn out, but god damn. lol. then 3 other confused couples walked in. they weren't sure if they were in the right theater.

as for the movie itself, The intro with the fat arse was freaking amazing. The movie is entertaining, considering that it's just a series of twighlight zone episodes. I sat there laughing during the entire Karan Chopra episode. ROFL. that's some great shit right there. the only episode I didn't care for was the insurance agent, and the shit with the kids.

overall, I left the theater satisfied.

btw, this film proves the prowess of Ram Gopal Verma. have you ever caught JD Chakravarthy's directorial debut film? it was a remake of some hollywood teenie bopper flick. it was horrible to say the least. but Chakravarthy did a fantastic job with his episode in this film, probably RGV was there to chew him up on everything. Chakravarthy's directorial debut was independent of RGV. Now I'm curious to see the full length Madhyanam Hatya.

ya the sajid khan intro segment was excellent.. though not exactly one of the episodes. out of the actual episodes, the jijy philips episode was definitely the best imo. the rest were good also, but I agree that those 2 were definitely the highlights of the film. looking forward to 'darna mangta hai' now

It's Appalling. Film came and ran for 24 shows already in Ottawa and "No Body Came" as the theatre inq told me.
No wonder, when an ardent fan, always on the lookout for any Hindi film playing in town, found it out on the last day of its run, by chance.

Yes, I did catch it in the evening. I liked it. It was not boring. Acting was good. Big AB. Rajpal Yadav, Anil Kapoor, Malika Sherawat, Item # was good and was well placed to roll along credis. Don't recognize/ remember all actors (Pl connect actors with characters in this film if you know or care) , but they all did fine. At places, comedy was intended instead of scare factor and it worked fine. Can't judge whether it has story, no story or stories or does this kind of film need a story??

------------------

BTW, surprisingly, I found more people in the theatre than what I expected for lack of publicity.
