Jaal takes an extra-ordinary start By: Abid --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaal -The Trap
The 5 year old movie was released with little or no publicity for the music and the movie. However, with little expectations, the movie took an extra ordinary start everywhere except Mumbai city, and parts of South and maintained it during the weekend. The buisiness of Qayamat was affected specially in the smaller centres and in North and central India, during the weekend.
Verdict - The selling price of the movie is reasonable for a Sunny Deol starrer. Jaal - The Trap should do well in Delhi-UP, Maharashtra, East Punjab, Bihar and Rajasthan. However, we have to wait for its final outcome at the box office.
Maa Santoshi Maa
Contrary to what the title suggests, the movie is family social rather than a mythological, and the makers Asish Filmcrafts, paid the price for misleading the audience.
Verdict - Could not repeat the amazing success of the 1974 hit Jai Santoshi Maa.The opening was dull.
Qayamat
As we had mentioned in our last column, Qayamat took an extra ordinary collection during the weekend, across each and every centre across India. The simultaneous release at the smaller centres using digital projection, paid rich dividends. However, the collections fell during the week in Metros and some big centres and due to the release of Jaal-The Trap the collections even in the smaller centres were affected, during the 2nd weekend.
Inspite of the above, Qayamat has returned excellent collections for the 1st week specially from the smaller centres. The collections from Metros are good but not extra ordinary.
Ist week colections and percentages: Mumbai- 88,70,175 -from 23 cinemas(8 on F.H.)- 80% Ahmedabad-34,26,573 from 10 cinemas- 88 % Rajkot-8,15,316 from 3 cinemas Nagpur-8,37,007 from 4 cinemas. Verdict - Qayamat is an expensive movie for a cast of its size. It has been sold for price ranging between 1.5 -1.75 cr per territory. As of now it is an average but with a reasonable 2nd week across India it can become above average to hit.
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon
After hoping to recover some lost ground during week 2, it seems Rajshri has finally come to accept that Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is a failure, but continue to attribute different reasons to it. They have now advertised in trade magazines that "Collections are affected in 3rd week due to heavy rains at all the centres". If that was true how did Qayamat get the above collections during the same week? The fact is after a reasonable 2nd week, the collections touched rockbottom even in Bihar, the only place where it had 2 really good weeks
3rd week collections and percentages: Mumbai- 35,37,889 - from 17 cinemas (5 on F.H.) 45 % Delhi- 29,92,929 from 9 cinemas- 68% (unconfirmed) Chennai/Madras-1,27,564 from 2 cinemas-60% Jaipur-6,32,428--75% Gurgaon (Haryana)-4,34,560 Bhopal- 87,531 (1 not received) Patna (Bihar)-1,74,948 Total for week III - 1,55,61,844 from 76 prints (confirmed) Projected Total For 3 weeks (All India)13.50 cr. Overseas-USA- $1,225,908, UK approximately 425,000 pounds.
Verdict - The movie narrowly misses being a disaster but remains a loosing proposition at the box office, even if we add the overseas earnings. To minimise their losses Rajshri will have to look at non-theatrical rights.
Hawa & Saaya
Both movies have failed at the Box Office in India. However, the Box Office outcome for Saaya will be better and its music is also selling well.
