Akbar Khan's big day

July 17 was a big day for filmmaker Akbar Khan for two reasons. First, it was his birthday. Second, the director threw a party at Mumbai's JW Marriot to promote his new film, Taj Mahal, starring Zulfi Sayed, Sonya Jehan, Manisha Koirala, Kabir Bedi, Pooja Batra, Arbaaz Khan and Kim Sharma.

Out of the cast, only Zulfi and Kim made an appearance. The invitees also included costume designer Anna Singh, singer Hariharan, music director Naushad with his assistant Uttam Singh and cinematographer RM Rao, besides others like Sunil Dutt and Neena Gupta.

The Khan family also made an appearance, including Sanjay Khan, Zarine Khan and Suzanne Khan.

Taj Mahal is slated for an Eid release (second week of December).

I don't think this DVD will come out anytime soon.
As per various news reports:
Akbar Khan recalled all the prints of the film back, when, as per him, it didn't get a proper release. Looks like even pirates didn't get a chance to video it before Akbar Khan took possession of all the prints back. He still wants to and is still waiting for a proper theatrical release and recover his money.

Thanks Rana.

It's a shame - I found it on youtube and watched some of it. It looks really well made and very engaging. I didn't know that Akbar Khan recalled the prints of the movie. The version on youtube looks like a videocamera print in a cinema.

Oh well - I guess I'll carry on waiting. It didn't play in many cinemas at all when it was released so I hope someone at some point releases it. It would sell well if he got it released on blu-ray as there aren't many Indian blu-rays around.

I recall reading a few news articles about the release and re-release of this film. It's in the news every now and then, Akbar Khan saying that he is still waiting for proper release.

As I recall:
It was a very expensive film. When it released, it flopped badly, ending run in 3 days in some theatres. Akbar Khan blamed it on poor marketing by the distributors and recalled all the prints so that he could release it on a later date with proper publicity. Looks like there are no buyers. Lots of money is stuck in this film and it must be released in a big scale with lots of hype, otherwise it'll be same result as in 2003 release. I don't think distributors have same optimism and hence not willing to spend lots on publicity and hype.

I'm not sure but wasn't this film among the first few Indian films released or was planned to release in Pakistan, when Indian films started showing in Pakistan again in the recent years ??

--------------
I too have seen a few min of clips on U tube. Perhaps they are from TV / theatrical promotions ??

Yes - this film was shown in Pakistan I believe. I remember seeing a new article about that. Someone on youtube has uploaded the whole film - also the TV promos are there.
