[On the whole, SAAYA falls short of expectations. The film has some engaging moments that keep you hooked on to the goings-on, but a handful of well-executed sequences can never really undo the harm done by a weak script and more specifically, a hard-to-digest climax. At the box-office, the film has some chances in select cinemas of metros, but at most places, the 'saaya' of success will elude it!

Rating:- * ½. ]

LOOK who is talking, HARD TO DIGEST CLIMAX!! My FOOT!!

DAMN IT, how this IDIOT ? DIgested CHALTE CHALTE climax? and DIKAR bhi nahi liya..MORON..

THE MOST DUMBEST EVER CLIMAX, he HAILED!!

He is RIDICULUS! :baaa: :nopity: :stupid:

Rediff:

As far as performances are concerned, Saaya earns John Abraham brownie points. As the mourning husband who refuses to come to terms with his wife's death, he is understated enough to make you realise Jism was no fluke.

IndiaFM:

SAAYA clearly belongs to John Abraham. No two opinions on that! Enacting a very difficult role, the newcomer actually performs like a veteran and delivers a performance that's bound to win him nominations in the award categories. His growth as an actor is tremendous!

------------------------------------------

Either way you look at it, John Abraham is a powerhouse of an actor who is going to be sticking around! As for Taran, the moron can think whatever he wants, I wont respect him for the rating he gave to Chalte Chalte. I'll definetely be watching this film :D

[After watching Saaya earlier this evening, I found myself wondering if all of the so-called “trade analysts” and “reviewers” in the industry have any taste at all. After all, some irresponsibly gave Saaya mostly negative reviews while praising loudmouth Kareena Kapoor’s latest misfire to the skies. Andaaz, a retrograde and regressive version of any Ektaa Kapoor soap currently airing on Sony TV, also won favorable reviews from other critics,

the very same critics who trashed Honey Irani’s wonderful Armaan and last week’s loveable Jhankaar Beats. Well, after watching the film, I conclude that Saaya, while not a perfect film, is definitely worth a look for its interesting content. The latest film from the Bhatt stable is an intriguing romantic thriller.

Finally, Saaya is a class act as well as an enjoyable way to spend an evening. It manages to deliver an engrossing and convincing love story as well as a few genuinely spooky moments.

Once again, the Bhatts do an excellent job with wardrobe, set design and atmosphere, creating the right look for the film as they did in Jism. The real star of the enterprise, however, is the music. The songs are soulful and romantic, with beautiful lyrics and excellent picturizations

Though the film is hardly original, it is definitely an improvement on its sappy, preachy source material and is a safer bet than Barjatya’s latest crapatastrophe, Hum Prem Ke Deewane Hain or Main Prem Ke Saath Saath Rehke Unki Deewani Bhi Hoon. Thankfully, we’re spared wretched Kareena Kapoor’s failed attempts to look good and act well.

Next up is Pooja Bhatt’s directorial venture Paap, another thriller starring John Abraham and newcomer Udita Goswami. Hopefully, this one will be as mature and engrossing as Saaya. ]

****I totally AGREE!! It is a CLASS ACT FILM, WILL SUIT BEST TO GENTRIES!
PRODUCTION VALUES/AMBIENCE/CINEMATOGRAPHY is VERY VERY GOOD!!

John Abraham is GOOD..

Mahima is Wasted..

Tara..is ok, just being there..

Music, GELLS very well with film..''
Anu also gave a GOOD BACKGROUND!

***I watched it LAST NIGHT..It is FILMED DIFFERENTLY, and I loved the filming..

A MUST DEKHO, may be ONCE ONLY...it wont DISAPPOINT you much, EVEN BEING A REMAKE>.

FILM, could have BECOME a SENSITIVE ENGROSING on the lines of LEKIN< but takes a wrong turn and keeps on that wrong turn, NOT COMING OUT OF REMAKE/UNORIGINAL plot..

In the hand of MATURE director SCRIPT writer, it would have been much more EMOTIONALLY ENGROSSING..but still I liked it BETTER than CHALTE CHALTE>>

The SHORT LENGTH of film 135 minutes, also works well in favour of film..

SOUR POINT..for me was A VERY BAD ,INAPROPRIATE INTERVAL TIMING that REALLY drastically HAMPER FLOW OF THE FILM>>esp, if you have to take 30 minutes break, for chai , samosa, toilet etc..

DVD..is OK for SPARK, DD 5.1 surround is WELL EXECUTED[quote] :baaa: :oo:

I could not believe ALOK's review, he STOLE EVERY THING FROM MY MOUTH>>>what a coincident..

HIS review is RIGHT ON THE MONEY!..GO WATCH it..

Well I watched the film last night as well, and so here are my thoughts/review of the film

-------------------------------------------------

SAAYA
Produced by: Vikram Bhatt
Director: Anurag Basu
Starring: John Abraham, Tara Sharma, Mahima Choudhary

Can true love bring back the dead?

Vikram Bhatt's SAAYA is a film of the supernatural, and revolves around Dr. Akash [John Abraham], who is grief-stricken when his pregnant physician wife, Maya [Tara Sharma], working as a volunteer in a relief camp in Nagaland, dies in a tragic bus accident.

Unable to bear her loss, Akash starts devoting all his time to the hospital. Gradually, Akash starts receiving messages about Maya trying to contact him from another world. The ill children in the hospital ward start speaking of seeing her in a tunnel during near-death experiences.

Maya's friend Tanya [Mahima Chaudhary] thinks Akash is crazy, but a nun [Zohra Segal] explains that Maya wants to convey a message to Akash, which is why she sends messages through the children.

Akash decides to get to the bottom, to search for the answers behind the signs the children have made, the questions that haunt him.

While originality, on the Bhatt's part, has never really been a strong point, it is usually the handling of a subject that tells the difference on their parts. Even with 2002's blockbuster RAAZ, the story, while not original, was made with the indian audience in mind and made the story in a way that is unique to the indian crowd.

In this manner, SAAYA is no different. It is a direct lift of Hollywood Films DRAGONFLY [Kevin Costner] and THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES [Richard Gere]. However, in terms of filmmaking style, it is made with the indian audience in mind. The handling and major moves within the plot of the story are made with an indian sense, while many of the scary and spine tingling points remind us of scenes in RAAZ.

Music by Anu Malik (and guest appearance by M.M.Kreem) is powerful and subtle, gelling very well with the storyline. The best of the lot are "O Saathiya", with lyrics by the late Anand Bakshi, along with "Aye Meri Zindagi". For those who are fans of subtle music, this is undoubtedly one of the most powerful scores of the year.

When it comes to performances, one cannot help but sit up and take notice of JOHN ABRAHAM. We have to remind ourself this is only his second movie, simply because he enacts like a veteran in many scenes. With the role requiring an emotionally empowered yet restrained performance, it is a challenging role for a newcomer, but John made it look easy!

Tara Sharma has more to her role than her debut movie OM JAI JAGADISH, but has little opportunity to emote.

Mahima Choudhary is fully in form and does very well in her own performance. Supporting cast all lend able support.

The downfall to the film comes in the unoriginality of the script, and some parts may seem to drag on. Overall however, for the enticed viewer of a supernatural tale such as SAAYA, these are small sacrifices.

Overall, Vikram Bhatt's SAAYA is a powerful supernatural tale divulging more into the love and faith stream. It is a rare tale of symbolism, love, emotion and supernaturalistic nature. A treat!

B4U..REVIEW: CALLS SAAYA..GOOD/ENGROSSING, but UNDERATES, because of UNORIGNALITY:

Saaya

Shadow Play

Director: Anuraag Basu
Producer: Mukesh Bhatt
Music: Anu Malik, MM Kreem
Cast: John Abraham, Tara Sharma, Mahima Chaudhary
Rating: * *

By Parag Chandrabala Maniar

However much director Anurag Basu may deny that Saaya is not based on any Hollywood flick, it is in fact a scene-by-scene remake of the Kevin Costner and Sussana Thompson starrer Dragonfly. Akash (John Abraham) and Maya (Tara Sharma) are doctors by profession. Maya leaves for Nagaland to volunteer for a medical camp. But meets with a bus accident that proves to be fatal. When Akash learns about his wife’s death he becomes practically insane. What follows are Maya’s attempts to contact Akash through a bald boy in a paediatric ward.

Saaya is no doubt a decent remake of the original. Particularly noteworthy are the scenes when Akash tries to hunt for his wife in a house filled with water. The scene—Akash’s interaction with Sister Martha (Zohra Sehgal) where she talks about life after death deserve a mention. Akash then has to decide whether he believes in the supernatural or not. He confides in Tanya (Mahima Chaudhary).

The film is not scary but it does create a certain degree of curiosity and keeps you on the edge of the seat. John Abraham is good! Comparatively, Tara Sharma fails to make an impact!

*****The film has a hummable music and skilled camerawork by Fuwad Khan. Watch it if you must!

UNIVERSAL APPRECIATION, for MOVIE/DIRECTOR and CINEMATOGRAPHER, BUT:

PITTY no THEATERS overseas, available to SHOW this GOOD FILM:

Director Anurag Basu leaves his mark with the very first film in Bollywood. He shows his caliber to try something different in every single shot. Anurag has leaped from the small to the big screen.

His shot planning reflects his deep involvement in filmmaking. There are many flaws in 'Saaya' too, but Amol Sehtge's screenplay has helped the film a lot. Though Amol failed as a director in Bhatt's 'Gunaah', but he proves his worth as a writer. 'Saaya' lacks haunting music. While 'Raaz' and 'Jism' were supported by its melodious and very well orchestrated music, Anu Malik fails in giving music of that standard in 'Saaya'. His music is very mediocre and prepared in haste.

Rajat Poddar has used innovative ideas in set designing. 'Saaya' proves that New Delhi can be utilized for shooting.

Fuwad Khan's cinematography deserves separate mention.

Though made as a supernatural thriller, 'Saaya' is miles away from being a shocking film. Its episodes do not shock, but make you inquisitive. Had it been a bit more musical and a bit more perfect in narration, the film would have been a big success for sure!

I agree 110% with viewer's sentiments:

NO CHEAP THRILLS, DESERVE VIEWERS:

(((((Saaya unfortunately is being marketed as a horror or spooky film, which it is not. This will work to its detriment as people will expect something on the lines of Raaz and Bhoot. It is perhaps too sophisticated for its own good and will not appeal as such to the front benchers…no cheap thrills to be had in any form for them in this. This is sad because it is a gripping and well made film, far superior to the candy floss rubbish like Main Prem ki diwani hoon. It deserves an audience.)))

BTW!! What is STORY with VS cover is it for UK..looks CLASSY though!
