Will Ash make a good Meena Kumari?

July 14, 2003

Suchitra Sen made Devdas' Paro immortal in Bimal Roy's 1955 classic.

When Aishwarya Rai relived her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's version, she had to fight expectations and comparisons made between her and Sen. She then proceeded to land most of the Best Actress Awards.

She also put Paro on the international map by taking the film to the Cannes International Film Festival.

Now, the actress will be seen in another Bengali period film, Guru Dutt's classic, Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam (starring Dutt, Meena Kumari and Vyjayanthimala). Ash will play Meena Kumari's Choti Malkin.

Will Ash live up to the huge expectations yet again? Will she match up to Kumari's haunting act of a lonely, alcoholic wife, who longs for her husband's attention? Will she make a good Meena Kumari or do you think comparisons are unfair? Should Rai's performance be judged on its own merit?

What do you think? We would love to hear from you.

****DISGUSTING... Pls forgod sake..LET MEENA's SOUL, stay in PEACE?? :baaa: :nopity: :bash:  :hmm: :bangbang: :stupid:

Ash to play Choti Malkin

Subhash K Jha | July 14, 2003 11:15 IST

Aishwarya Rai will play the Choti Malkin in a new version of the Bimal Dutt classic Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1952). The film is being produced by Pritish Nandy Communications.

It was immortally filmed by Guru Dutt in 1962 with Meena Kumari in the central role.
Pritish Nandy reportedly considered several directors for his most lavish epic project, including Rituparno Ghosh (Chokher Bali) and Shaad Ali (Saathiya), who is on the verge of finalising his second project with Rani Mukerji and probably Hrithik Roshan in the lead.

Nandy has now zeroed in on Deepa Mehta (Bollywood/Hollywood). "I think Deepa would be able to give a totally new twist to the novel. Aishwarya has never played a decadent character before. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam will give her a chance to blossom beyond what she has done so far."

This would mark Rai's third consecutive journey into Bangla period dramas after Devdas and Chokher Bali. She is now in London shooting for Gurinder Chadha's Bride And Prejudice.

When contacted, Mehta, who has just finished location hunting for her new Kareena Kapoor-Rahul Khanna project, said, "I don't know what kind of a Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam I would make. But it will be MY film, not Guru Dutt's. Just like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas [Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit], had nothing to do with Bimal Roy's classic take [with Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen and Vyjayanthimala] on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel."

The rest of the cast is yet to be decided. It is reliably learnt that Salman Khan had been almost finalised for the pivotal role of Bhootnath, the besotted staffer in the large desolate haveli where the drama unfolds. It was earlier played by Guru Dutt.

With Rai playing the central role, Khan may no longer be the male lead.

Earlier, when Sanjay Leela Bhansali was casting for his period epic Bajirao Mastani, Rai had categorically stated her unwillingness to work with Khan.

Meena Kumari is my favourite actress - and along with 'Pakeezah', 'Sahab Bibi Aur Ghulam' is my favourite film.

The only other version of the movie that I have seen (a long time ago) was the Bengali movie 'Sahab, Bibi, Golam' which was made before Guru Dutt's version. Both of these films remained unique, but both handled the story with simplicity.

I can easily see this new version becoming a major disaster like Devdas ... the only good thing about that movie was Madhuri Dixit. Only an actress of the calibre of Madhuri Dixit (or perhaps Manisha Koirala) could pull this role off. Who will play Jabaa (Waheeda Rehman's character)? Maybe they'll get Kareena Kapoor to resurrect 'poo' once again to give a unique rendition of Jabaa!

What I don't understand is that Sahab Bibi Aur Ghulam and Devdas were both novels that were made in to movies. There are loads of novels that have not been committed to film. Why doesn't someone do something really special and make an old novel in to a new movie ... an original story and original characters that no one has seen on the screen before?

It's a pity that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas isn't getting its dues from those who think they know what 'good' films are. It's even more piteous that the many nut-jobs out there that love this film conclusively misreckon its greatness and appeal only towards its star-package. Bhansali's envisions to the film and his adaptation to Sarat Chandra's novel is outlying to its current time. As oppose to highlighting the simplistic mood, look, and feel to Sarat Chandra's (and maybe perhaps Bimal Roy's too) original ambitions, Bhansali has equally mastered its opposite end of the spectrum, and its stylish and aesthetic. And for a matter of one to argue that Madhuri Dixit was the only saving grace in the film, I could equally assail this and argue that she was infact the films weakest act, incontrovertibly a mistake on Bhansali's end.

Having to follow much of the cinema of South East Asia, explicitly Taiwan. I am happy and pleasured to say that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas is India's answer to Hsiao-hsien Hou's Hai shang hua (Flowers Of Shanghai). Both films are a clear image of eachother, except that one isn't an adaptation to any novel. In any case, I suppose this is all good. Some of the best films ever made are primitively trashed by a majority.

As for the matter of a remake of Guru Dutt's masterpiece, I would like to see how Deepa Mehta features her adaptation using very pretentious actors, but more vitally how she makes this new film aesthetically her own.
