Madness at 88 Antop Hill( alert possible spoiler)

Deepa Gumaste | June 26, 2003 21:35 IST

88 Antop Hill falls in the 100 Days (Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit) category of mediocre murder mysteries that rely heavily on contrived plot situations and finish with hopelessly simplistic resolutions. The only area in which Kushan Nandy's debut film improves on 100 Days is in some impressive camera angles by cinematographer Hari Nair and a couple of interesting visual effects.
Just like Ram Gopal Varma's recent hit Bhoot, this film too goes overboard with its sound design. In fact, all the shrill-pitched screeching and screaming in the background leaves you more deaf than scared.

The story itself is akin to a B-grade sex and violence thriller. A bank employee Pratyush (Atul Kulkarni) has a spat with his wife (Suchitra Pillai). She walks out on him with their daughter. The next morning, his friend Aslam (some unknown guy who believes illicit sex is the answer to the world's problems) suggests he visit a call girl called Teesta (Sweta Menon) to rid himself of his woes.

Late at night, Pratyush gets a frantic call for help from Aslam asking him to come to 88 Antop Hill. Now, 88 Antop Hill is supposed to be a shady building right in the middle of a heavily populated area in central Mumbai. In the film, however, it looks more like the typical abandoned purani haveli of the Ramsay variety than a down-market chawl that houses prostitutes.

Since Nandy has to justify his visual and sound effects, authenticity is conveniently bumped off in reel one itself and the stereotypical 'rainy night, eerie location' prototype is faithfully reproduced.

As Pratyush soon discovers, Aslam is nowhere in the picture and has, in fact, conned him into visiting Teesta. Why an ordinary prostitute should live in a house with bizarre lighting is a good question to ask. In fact, all the characters in the film live and move around in spaces that are lit so unnaturally, you wonder whom the director hoped such clichés would terrify.

Pratyush ends up spending more time with Teesta than he wanted to and is the unfortunate witness to a murder. Worse, a dirty blackmailer who lives in the same building and a watchman spot him leaving in a hurry with blood on his shirt.

The next morning, Inspector Arvind Khanvilkar (Rahul Dev) arrives on the scene of the crime and starts unravelling the mystery, which leads him to Teesta's ex-boyfriends, her former friend Sonali (played by a woman called Jasmine) and her millionaire boyfriend (a wooden-faced model-turned-non-actor) who lives in an obscene house and looks deranged enough to fit in perfectly with the rest of the ensemble.

Clever Mr Khanvilkar snubs his deputy at every opportunity and solves the mystery quite easily, while poor Pratyush spends the entire length of the film stumbling from one murder scene to another.

Films like 88 Antop Hill don't exactly need a saving grace -- they are better off not being made at all.

But if there is something worth a mention, it is a couple of scary moments and solid performances from Atul Kulkarni and Rahul Dev. Both actors rise above the frailties of the film (and the rest of the cast) but their heroic efforts aren't enough to salvage the situation.

Nandy's screenwriting partner Kiran Shroff has scripted episodes for television thriller series like X-Zone and Thriller at 10. 88 Antop Hill is exactly like one of these small-screen productions unnecessarily stretched into a full-length feature film.

BACKGROUND MUSIC KILLS THE MURDER MYSTERY

Whenever a film is released with some numerical in its title in Bollywood, it does create a lot of curiosity among viewers. There have been films like 'Victoria No. 203', '5 Rifles' and 'Bombay 405 Miles'. All of them were thriller films, while 'Victoria No. 203' was a comedy with famous actors like Ashok Kumar and Pran. Other films with numerical did good business at the Box Office. Viewers had great expectations from '88 Antop Hills'.

Its director Kushan Nandy who makes his debut in Bollywood with this film has proved his grip on thriller stories. He has directed nearly a dozen of short stories that were telecast on the small screen. It is his first effort to show his caliber on the big screen in '88 Antop Hill'. But, he has not succeeded.'88 Antop Hill' has a good storyline with lots of turns and surprises. It also has effective screenplay. But its background music has destroyed the chance of the film. It hurts and irritates people. The unwanted screams and high- pitch sound leaves viewers running for painkillers.

88 Antop Hill' is a story of Pratyush Shellar (Atul Kulkarni). He works in a bank. On his marriage anniversary he fails to reach home in time. His wife Antara (Suchitra Pillai) gets angry with him and leaves home with her daughter. Pratyush is left alone at home and gets a call from his close friend to save the latter's life. Pratyush reaches his friend at '88 Antop Hill'. He enters the flat of Teesta (Shweta Menon) who is a call girl. Infact his friend sent Pratyush to this sexy and seductive girl. Teesta tries to seduce him, but Pratyush refuses to share bed with her. He wanted to go home but in the meantime Teesta is killed.

'The police suspects Pratyush's hand in this murder. Pratyush tries to prove his innocence. He finds out that Teesta had a boy friend, which was brother of her friend Sonali (Jasmine). Sonali wants to marry a millionaire and for that she uses her body and beauty. Inspector Arvind Khanvilkar steps in. He finds out that Sonali had a past that her new fianc頤oes not know. But as he tries to unfold the mystery, Sonali's brother is kidnapped and killed. Again Pratyush is the target. The police find the murder weapon from Pratyush's home and also gets many other proofs. Is he really innocent or is he trying to fool the police? Who killed Teesta and what was killer's motive?

'88 Antop Hill' is a film that could have been made to look more impressive if the director Kushan Nandy had given some more thoughts to the technical side. He has got a good story and convincing screenplay. But his way of narrating the story is very much like that of Ramsay brothers. The film looked like a two-hour episode of 'Zee Horror Show'. Shweta Menon exposes a lot and so does Jasmine. While Shweta is more impressive, she has a very small role. On the other hand Jasmine, who is very poor in acting and in the dialogue delivery, has been given a major role. There seems to be a competition between the two, but soon Shweta is killed and the responsibility to carry the film ahead falls on Jasmine. No doubt, she is sexy and looks hot on the screen but she is a bad actress.

The locations selected for the film are okay but are not exploited very well. The camera work is below average and so is the editing part. The lighting department too fails to help. The worst part in the film is its background music. After every ten minutes, one hears a scream of a girl that has no connection with the happenings on the screen. The director tries to create fear by this sound but after two three times these screams become a cause of headache. The background music is responsible for the people leaving the film in between. It would have been better if Kushan had maintained silence and natural ambience to create horror feeling on the screen.

It is Atul Kulkarni only who comes out as the sole winner in the film. After 'Chandni Bar' and then in 'Satta', Atul has improved his acting. He has worked hard in this film too. As a common man who gets trapped in the murder mystery, he leaves a mark and deserves separate reference. The music is by Rajesh Roy who has come out with a Tapori kind of song 'Besharm Ho Gaye Hum'. This is the only song that is remembered by viewers, but because of its lyrics and not for its music. On the whole, '88 Antop Hill' fails to use the trend that is liked by viewers after 'Raaz' and 'Bhoot'. The film competes with 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' at the box office. It is good to avoid this film if you don't want a headache after seeing it.
