The industry is celebrating its parade of hits or rather, more politically correct, successful films. After Ishq Vishk, Andaaz, Bhoot has come out a crystal clear winner. Director Ram Gopal Varma just held a party in honor of the film´s success and it sure means that different films are becoming the mainstay in Hindi cinema. Analysts have confirmed that the film is a hit in many places and above average in many others. Recent releases, Khwahish and Nayee Padosan aren´t so lucky however. Things weren´t flowing in their favor and only Nayee Padosan stood a chance to survive. Andaaz, which released previously, after good collections in the first week fell by almost 40% in Mumbai City and Delhi City. In South India the fall was about 20 %. However in North, the collections were steady, getting better collections than the new releases in many centers of UP, Bihar and Central India. The collections in Hyderabad city were also quite steady.

The movie was already declared a universal hit due to its consistent performance across India as was seen by our city wise collections last week and will only add to producer Suneel Darshan´s profit as he is the distributor also and also holds the music rights. In the overseas also Andaaz remained in the UK chart for the second consecutive week getting 264, 000 pounds. Collections from USA were not available. Both the new releases have failed to get good openings but Nayee Padosan has got slightly better collections due to its limited appeal amongst college students. Khwahish on the other hand has had only got some praise for its leading lady Mallika Sherawat, which certainly was not enough to rope in audiences!

The verdict on both movies is that they have been made on a low budgets but it seems like both will fail except that Nayee Padosan will fare slightly better in cities.

Film
Bhoot
Starring
Urmila Matondkar, Ajay Devgan, Seema Biswas, Nana Patekar, Rekha, Fardeen Khan, Victor Bannerjee
Released
May 30th, 2003
Summary
The budget of Bhoot was kept a closely guarded secret and a figure of 15 crore was selectively given to the media . It was only during an interview, that the director Ram Gopal Verma gave the actual budget which is 6.5 crore (which will be 8 crore once other costs are added) and so the whole Box Office analysis of Bhoot has to be done keeping this budget in mind.

The first week all India gross is 7.3 crores. First week percentages range from 90% (Mumbai), 78% (Delhi), 42% (Jodhpur), 50% (Indore), 62% (Jamshedpur), 45% (Lucknow), 25% (Agra), 42% (Kanpur).

For a movie that has no songs and a very novel plot and treatment, full credit and accolades must be given to the director Ram Gopal Verma. The movie had excellent collections in Mumbai Territory, Delhi city, Hyderabad -Nizam and Chennai as we had already predicted last week, and grossed more than one crore in Delhi City and Mumbai city (with suburbs).

However, in places like UP, Central India and Eastern India the movie was a washout and only centers like Jaipur, Kolkata and Jamshedpur had reasonable collections.

Final Verdict
While the movie has been a triumph for producer Nitin Manmohan and director RGV both critically and economically, the exhibitors and sub agents will lose in UP, Eastern Territory, Central India
specially in theaters on fixed hire and that is why the movie cannot be dubbed as an all India hit.

In Mumbai territory and Southern territory the movie is on its way to becoming a super hit and in Delhi City it has got superb collections but here the profit will be reduced for the distributor, due to the non-performance in UP (even in the A centers) and Uttaranchal, while in East Punjab it may cover its cost due to its performance in Gurgaon and Chandigarh.
