Chalte Chalte runs to full houses

Sunday, June 15, 2003:

Watch story (Mumbai):

Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee starrer Chalte Chalte is speeding ahead at the box office at least in the first two days after its release.

Most theatres are running to packed houses with tickets being sold out for all the shows over the weekend.

And with tickets being at a premium in almost all theatres across Mumbai, it is an ideal situation for the black marketers to rake in a quick buck.

"No tickets are available. The home delivery service has been put on hold and so are the phones. This is a racket," claims a local.

However, owners of single screen theatres and multiplexes are helpless. The craze for the badshah of Bollywood and his rani has finally made a bearish box office come alive especially after the success of films like Andaaz and Bhoot.

"We are pretty much sold out. The tickets that are available would be a few random tickets in the afternoon. Even at Rs 180 rupees to Rs 200 rupees per ticket, we are sold out," said Neeraj Goswami, exhibitor

With glimpses of several films like Abhimaan and Saathiya, Aziz Mirza's Chalte Chalte is no different, but the performance of the lead pair and some brilliantly shot scenes has resulted in a bumper opening.

Delhi and Mumbai have had a 100 per cent opening while Hyderabad and Chennai have drawn in 80 per cent audiences.

"If Shah Rukh had three–four releases annually, it would have opened to 80 per cent. But one film a year has done the trick. He is a star but this time he has proved that he is brilliant actor. And after Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, this is his best and most natural performance," says Taran Adarsh, trade analyst.

Along with Chalte Chalte, Matrix Reloaded was also released and is reaping the benefits of a full house, as tickets for the Hindi film are sold out.

Apne yaar ALI IKRAM from INDOLINK's COMMENTS:

Saw it last night...

Flick is a poor man's Saathiya (the basic message) with some decent
comedy,
but shameless melodrama and the usual SRK hamming. Rani looks and acts
great, but she should have kept her original stance and refused the
film.
SRK's TOO OLD to be playing such characters any more.
The flick is also far too long. Grated on my nerves, especially since
I
watched it at an AMC where they cut out the "Intermission", and it was
3
hours plus of sitting (except for my necessary washroom break).

Watch it only if you must. 6.9/10

***I TRUSt his opinion very much LOL!

Shah Rukh, Rani rule BO
The Shah Rukh Khan-Rani Mukerji romance in Chalte Chalte has met with a fabulous response at the BO.
In most cases, collections dip Monday onwards, but this Aziz Mirza film continues to lure the crowds.

Note: Films are ranked on the basis of their performance at the box-office every week. Though a film may be declared a flop, it may have performed better than the other films that week.

Chalte Chalte

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji
Director: Aziz Mirza
Good performances, great music.

Unoriginal plot.

Number of weeks: New
BO Verdict: Hit
The review

Bhoot

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Fardeen Khan, Rekha, Victor Banerjee
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
A well-directed, tight film. Urmila's superb performance.

A disappointing climax.

Number of weeks: 3
BO Verdict: Hit
The review

Khwahish

Jajantaram Mamantaram

Cast: Jaaved Jaaferi, Gulshan Grover, Manav Kaul, Joy Fernandes
Director: Soumitra Ranade
Jaaved Jaaferi's funny antics. Interesting plot.

Shoddy special effects. Too many songs.

BO Verdict: Flop
The review

Armaan

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Gracy Singh, Randhir Kapoor
Director: Honey Irani
Big B's outstanding performance.

Yes...an on another page of Rediff it says...

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2003/jun/16news.htm

"Though Chalte Chalte, Shah Rukh Khan's third home production, did not fare well at the box-office, Rani's performance has been appreciated."

Rediff's gone a bit batty.

And they don't give raw bo numbers like the rest of them.
The 'hit' Andaaz has made about half of the 'flop' Hero so far.
The 'hit' Bhoot made its money back and more in India, but is a no show overseas. Andaaz had no legs. Bhoot seems to
have some legs in India. Chalte, Chalte? Who knows, the
first week isn't even over yet.
:hmm:

Chalte Chalte is certainly doing well in the USA. Theater has been sold out Monday and Tuesday, at all shows; they added additional shows until they ran out of reels. I haven't seen this happen since K3G...
