'Sandiyar' shooting cancelled! Tuesday, 10 June , 2003, 07:47 By Moviebuzz
The shooting of Kamalhassan's magnum opus Sandiyar has been cancelled.
As Sify.com had reported yesterday, Madurai police ruled out any special protection to Kamalhassan and his crew at Khaji Karutha Rowther college at Uthamapalayam where the shooting of Sandiyar was to commence today.
A huge set was put up by art director depicting a court and the plan was to shoot in the campus for the time being with private security guards providing security but seeing a few PT protestors some members of the unit were apprehensive. The superintendent of police, Amal Raj reportedly told Kamalhassan that security could not be provided as the story of the film involves three caste groups and they anticipate law and order problems.
Police also said that they were ready to give security after Kamalhassan and the Puthiya Tamizhagam reached a settlement. So for the time being it looks like Sandiyar would never be shot in Tamilnadu. Meanwhile there are rumours that Kamal may shoot the film in and around Thekkady in Kerala, a few kilometres away from Theni.

Jaya says no to security for 'Sandiyar' crew Friday, 13 June , 2003, 17:37 Chennai: The controversy surrounding versatile actor Kamal Hassan's new film 'Sandiyar', alleged to have casteist overtones, deepened today with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa ruling out police security for the crew during the shooting of the film.
Asked about Kamal Hassan's statement that he would meet her and seek police protection for the film crew, she said the State Government could not give protection if an artiste deliberately wanted to make a film on a controversial subject.
"If anything goes wrong during the shooting and the law and order situation is disturbed, I will be held responsible for it," she said.
Stating that the primary duty of the police was to protect all sections of the people and maintain law and order, the Chief Minister said besides, the police force was already understaffed and could not provide protection for a private person for three or four months.
As the Superintendent of Police (SP) of each district was empowered to handle the law and order situation, the SP of Theni had the authority to grant or deny permission for the film shooting, she said.
Jayalalithaa denied that Dalit leader K Krishnasamy's protest against the film would amount to him assuming the role of a private vigilante and infringing on Kamal Hassan's artistic freedom.
Krishnasamy of 'Puthiah Thamizhagam' had earlier alleged that the film, if completed and released, would spark off clashes in the communally-sensitive southern district of Theni where the film's story was set. He had also warned that his partymen would not permit the shooting of the film.
The first shooting schedule of the film had to be cancelled earlier this week following the withdrawal of permission by the Theni district Superintendent of Police.
In a statement, Kamala Hassan had explained that his film did not contain any casteist overtones.

Is 'Sandiyar' anti-dalit? Monday, 09 June , 2003, 15:19 By Moviebuzz
The Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) President R.Krishaswamy has valid reasons for his ire against Kamalhassan and his film Sandiyar. Krishnaswamy's base is in the southern Tamilnadu especially among dalits of Tirunelveli district.
Kamalhasan's earlier film Thevar Magan released in mid 90's eulogised the Thevar community who are the bitter foes of PT and the dalits in southern districts. There have been frequent caste clashes between the communities in recent times. Krishnaswamy says that there were caste clashes immediately after the release of, Thevar Magan some 10 years back.
Kamalhassan had glorified the Thevars in the film as great martial arts exponents who are benevolent and exists as epitome of justice and kindness. In fact late Sivaji Ganesan, himself a Thevar, was the lead actor in the film and Kamal played his obedient son! The underlying message of the film was to glorify the Thevars.
Krishnaswamy adds that the Thevars had used adulatory dialogues about their community, which whipped up passions and triggered clashes with their archrivals the dalits down south. Now Kamalhassan according to Krishnaswamy is making a sequel to Thevar Magan. Said Krishnaswamy: "Kamalhassan is trying to redeem his box-office fortunes by glorifying the Thevars. Look at the stills of the film that shows the main stars with huge moustaches and wielding knives, swords and sickles. I am afraid that Sandiyar is nothing but Thevar Magan-2".
The shooting of Sandiyar is starting later this week (June 11) in Theni. PT leaders are threatening to disrupt the shooting of the film. Krishnaswamy has also appealed to the censor board to ensure that Sandiyar has no shots or dialogues which could instigate violence. The Madurai police has already washed their hands off and said that they will not be able to provide protection to Kamal and the crew, for over two months in the location.
