Nasseruddin Shah to play the Mahatma

Actor Naseeruddin Shah will play the lead role of Mahatma Gandhi in Joy Augustine's Mahatma Vs Gandhi that is based on the controversial play by the same name that was in turn based on the Gujarati novel Prakash Na Parchaaya. Augustine also revealed that Jaya Bachchan was to likely play the role of Kasturba. Ever since the novel was written several filmmakers from Bollywood had attempted to buy rights from the author to make a film on the book. Yash Chopra had been negotiating but Augustine maintains that Mahatma is his film and that he would make it somehow. There was a time when even Aamir Khan wanted to make a film on the subject. He wanted to play the role of Gandhi's son. Even Sanjay Leela Bhansali attempted to acquire the rights of the film. Aamir Khan even had a squabble with Augustine about the novel. He told Augustine that if he ever made a film on it, to offer him the role of Gandhi's son. "Things of course are changed today especially after Lagaan. In fact, Aamir should thank me for taking away the novel from him. It was then that he began Lagaan," Augustine said. The other cast and crew is yet to be decided.

Nasser has previously played Gandhi in Hey Ram, where he was unnoticeable but the voice gave it away. Out of actors who played Gandhi, apart from Ben Kingsley being the best, another good performance was given by the actor who played Gandhi in Legend of Bhagat Singh, who was very convincing.

I knew NASEER was in HEY RAM!! but his role was very brief and not WELL DEVELOPED!

He was choice VS BEN KINGSLEY for GANDHI and director claimed! he could not LOOSE enought weight in stated time to play the role..so..it is history..BEN KINGSLEY..won OSCAR!!

But NASEER always wanted to play GANDHI to T!

He may be able to do a good job, but he seriously needs to do something about his voice, because he sounds nothing like Gandhi.

He might be over shadowed by other actors there, but what da heck!
