LAJMI REPLACES AISH WITH MANISHA KOIRALA

Award-winning filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi was on cloud nine when Aishwarya Rai expressed her desire to star in her forthcoming film. But the latest news is that Kalpana has dropped Aish from the film and signed on Manisha Koirala instead.


Kalpana Lajmi is a director who has always made news. Dimple Kapadia made her first big impact as an actress in Kalapana's film 'Rudaali'. Her last film 'Daman' may not have set the box-office on fire but it certainly got the lead actress Raveena Tandon her first and only National Award. Probably that's what makes Kalpana so popular among the actresses. They know that her films may never become box-office blockbusters but critical acclaim and rewards are almost assured.

When Kalpana launched her new film 'Singhasan', she believed that only an Aishwarya Rai could do justice to the main role in the film. And she was even more delighted when Aishwarya actually expressed her keenness to be part of a project directed by Kalpana.

But things never progressed after that. 'Devdas' followed soon after and Aishwarya's tryst with Hollywood also took place. Probably, Aish just didn't have the time to accommodate a new project. Or maybe her priorities had changed.

Whatever the reason, Aish started ignoring Kalpana and even refused to meet her. Kalpana tried her best to set up a meeting but in vain. She couldn't believe that this was the same Aishwarya who was a totally different person before 'Devdas'. Kalpana was further shocked when one day, Aish's secretary Hari Singh called her up and told her that Aish would do the film provided Kalpana paid her the full remuneration - which obviously is a huge sum. That's when Kalpana realized that this was nothing but a play to avoid doing the film. Because, when the project was first mooted Aishwarya was not only keen in doing the project, but was ready to slash her price to be able to do the film.

Anyway, Kalpana has now dropped Aishwarya from her project and signed Manisha Koirala instead. The film also stars Kalpana's close Raveena Tandon in a key role. The shooting for 'Singhasan' begins in July this year and the film will release by December. Only time will tell if Aishwarya has taken a right decision or not.

Incidentally, this is the third film within a year that Aish will not be a part of though she was initially a part of the project. The first was the Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Chalte Chalte' in which she was unceremoniously thrown out by SRK after her ex-beau Salman Khan had created a ruckus on the sets of 'Chalte Chalte'. Then Aish chose not to do Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Bajirao Mastani' for personal reasons. After Aish's departure from 'Bajirao Mastani' Bhansali roped in Kareena Kapoor who incidentally was the first choice for Paro's role in 'Devdas'. But the financier of 'Devdas', Bharat Shah made Bhansali drop Kareena and take Aish because with Aish and Madhuri Dixit in it, 'Devdas' seemed economically a more viable project. That was all in the past. Now comes the news that her supposed Hollywood offers have turned out to be nothing more than mere rumours. So one wonders if Aish is on the right track as far as her career is concerned or has success spoiled her.

Apart from being in and out of projects Aishwarya Rai has also been in the news for the Cannes film festival. Aish's selection as a panel member on the jury at Cannes film festival was greeted by many of her Bollywood colleagues as an honour. At the same time there was a big section that felt there was more then pure merit that got Aish in the panel. In fact there were a few who said that Aish got in the due to L'Oreal Paris the cosmetics giants who plugged in for her since they have signed as their brand ambassador.

I think Manisha will be able to do a better job anyway. She's a far better actress than Aish anyday!

You know what I heard the other day on the radio? That Manisha is maing another film where she plays a worker amongst prostitutes which will contain a 'love' scene where she will not use a Body double....what is going through her mind?...I suppose ecsls was not 'tasteful' enough.

"Love scene" in Indian movies usually means no nudity and kissing everywhere besides the lips :)

ISN"t she producing that film, her self? manisha? costar is SUSHMITA?
