Cosmetic surgery and stars

Once, Karishma Kapoor changed her name to Karisma. But recently, she went several steps ahead. She got her nose altered and improved. Her chin too underwent the scalpel of the cosmetic surgeon. The new look of the Kapoor girl has added a class to her. Karisma looks great and her fee has gone up. A little bird tells me that this change only indicates her plans of marriage with Jeh Wadia, and that the denial of their marriage plans can only be taken with a pinch of salt.

It is the same with Shilpa Shetty. She has got herself 'altered'. The new-look Shilpa can best be described as an improved version. Whether it will help her salvage her career or she has done it to please Akshay Kumar before they take the plunge, is a question only time will answer. But the point is that cosmetic surgery has become an inevitable part of show business in India. As much as it is a part of Hollywood. Actors are narcissistic people. They love themselves, and they can't tolerate any flaw in their looks. Bad delivery of lines might be okay and mediocre performances could be fine, but an actor has to always look young and good.

Cosmetic surgeons, therefore, have two kinds of clients. Those who want to look better and those who want to look younger. And both types want to keep it a secret!

Once, Dr Narendra Pandya, a top cosmetic surgeon who even counts former Indian Presidents Giani Zail Singh and R Venkatraman among his clients, told me that, "We in India are at a stage where America was 30 years ago. Nobody owned up that a particular procedure has been performed on her or him. Today, it has become commonplace there."

Jane Fonda, for instance, talked about her 'mistake' of having breast implants. Sally Farmiloe, Melanie Griffith and Brigette Nielsen didn't hesitate before discussing their experiences. Our Rekhas and Dimples are not that open. Rekha, in fact, has always denied any cosmetic surgery, and has attributed all the changes in her to an expert make-up! Nor has Dimple ever admitted any surgical changes. Or any one else for that matter.

Yet, there are several cases one can see. The first known case of major cosmetic surgery in Bombay's film industry is of Katy Mirza! Few remember her now, but in the mid-seventies she was the most ogled model and starlet in Bombay. Her assets: a 48" bustline. No silicone, nothing artificial. They were for real. She was a very successful model and went on to become a Playboy Bunny for the same reason. Her cleavage drew so much attention that no article about her could be complete without a mention of her twin assets. God knows why, one fine day she got tired of them and got them surgically 'reduced'. In fact, many believe Katy to be an unusual woman in a mammary-obsessed world but then Katy was an exception.

Breast implants aren't the only cosmetic surgeries Indian film stars undergo. Nose jobs are the most common. Sridevi is among the first stars to have gone in for a nose job. Sridevi in her earlier films (Solva Saal, Sadma and Himmatwala) had a not-so-attractive nose. If not many noticed her pudgy nose it was because her performance drew the attention away or, her thighs attracted the voyeurs earning her the title of 'thundering thighs'! Sridevi's new look skyrocketed her to the top. Whether her evergreen hero Jeetendra recommended a cosmetic surgeon or Sridevi found one on her own is not known, but the outcome was fabulous.Madhuri Dixit, who won the race, after a tough competition with her, didn't go in for any cosmetic changes, though Pahlaj Nihalani had rejected her because, to quote him, 'I found her legs too thin!'. But that was before 'Tezaab'. Without any artifical changes, Madhuri moved from one sucess to another. She did need the help of a dermatologist though, as she used to have a chronic acne problem which refused to go away. She sported this spotted look till 'Saajan' and it was a Khar dermatologist who cured her.

Young actors too have gone in for a change in their looks. Ravi Behl got his nose reshaped after 'Narasimha' and long before Karisma, Harish, costar of her debut film 'Prem Qaidi' also got his jaws reshaped to get rid of his baby-faced looks. Of course, unlike the actresses I have mentioned, the new look didn't really help the guys.

But the actresses have certainly benefitted. Dimple Kapadia did not have an hourglass figure before 'Saagar'. She was a mother of two daughters but she got herself admitted to Breach Candy Hospital for thigh, hips and buttock, lipectomy. She regained her figure and could wear a bikini and still look almost like she did in 'Bobby'.. Rekha too is supposed to have undergone a partial face lift to have her present, chiselled features. Interestingly, much before the women, the men in the industry have gone in for cosmetic changes. The reason might be their tendency to remain in the movies for a long time. The actresses are chosen for their looks and are sidelined even before their looks fade. The men continue for a long time.

Raj Kapoor had undergone lipectomy during a hush hush visit to the USSR before starting 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai'. Unlike the other stars, Raj was open about it. His 'slimming trip'was extensively written about. However, this openness boomeranged. There were expectations and disappointments. His film, however, was a hit.

Another actor of the same era, who has often become the butt of jokes, is Dev Anand. First came dental cosmetics for him. He had a broken tooth and it added to his charm. With time, it fell off, but believing the broken tooth to be a part of his overall charm, he got another broken tooth made and fixed inits place. Even God must have lost count of the times Dev Anand has undergone facelifts, and it is believed that no cosmetic surgeon is willing to touch him any more. He was among the first male stars to have gone in for a hair transplant and that is when, answering a question about his alleged wig, he let the interviewer pull his hair to 'prove' that his hair was real. Though that shut up some of his critics, it is wellknown that he wore a wig in some of his films.

Jackie Shroff too has gone in for hair weaving and since it is not so successful, he often covers his head with a bandana. Sunny Deol too is in the same boat. His hair too are artificially enhanced. However, the only actor who has admitted to a hair graft is Amitabh Bachchan. He has stated categorically, "Whenever I run short of hair, I buy some!" Insiders tell me that almost every aging hero and heroine has gone in for a facelift but no one, not even Garam Dharam, has admitted to it. Well, that is show business. They have to keep up the facade. And we have to prick the balloons.

The latest candidate for a hair implant is Akshaye Khanna! He is going to have a hair transplant pretty soon.
