Kamal Hassan has decided to revive his ambitious film 'Marudhanaayagam'. This is on the life-story of the 'Braveheart of Kodambakkam'. The actor has taken a 30-minute print of the movie to Cannes to lure investors. It maybe recalled here that Kamal Hassan had launched the movie in 1997 in collaboration with a French company. After Pokhran tests, France imposed sanction on India. So, Kamal Hassan's French counterpart backed out. Even the Queen of England paid a visit to the sets of 'Marudhanaayagam' and witnessed the battle scene, which was canned to show her. This scene of a few minutes cost Hassan Rs 15 million. He is producing the film under his Raj Kamal banner, besides scripting, directing and playing the lead role himself.

There is a controversy about 'Marudhanaayagam'. Some say he was the pioneer of the freedom struggle, while other history buffs quote available records to show that his employer, the Nawab of Arcot, and his British agents to put down rebellion by local chieftains in and around Madurai used him. 'Marudhanaayagam' is also believed to have spearheaded the battle against the French, who were out to capture the East India Company's fort in Madras. When he got too big the Nawab and the Company instituted reprisals, forcing him to rebel. So he was captured and executed. They don't consider him a freedom fighter. Anyway, Kamal Hassan had hired Zakir Husain for the music of the film He had been keen on hiring big names like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth, Madhuri Dixit and Arjun to play cameos in the film. Kamal Hassan as a versatile actor-director-producer has always dreamt of winning an Oscar for a Tamil film. If he finds an investor, his dream of winning an Oscar may just come true.

This isn't the first time he's tried to get into the Oscar race. He has a history of manipulating the Chennai-based committee which used to choose films for the Oscars. He got films like Indian, Kuruthipunal and Hey Ram in aside from 5 others. Anybody who thinks that only Bollywood manipulates such things hasn't got half the idea of the shady workings of the Tamil industry.

Here's an excerpt from ApunKaChoice:

With the entry of Hey Ram for the prestigious Academy Awards 2001, Kamal Haasan has made it to the record book for being the first Indian star to feature in maximum number of films from India to be chosen for the Oscars.

His eighth film to enter the Academy awards' list of probables, Kamal is keeping his fingers crossed. “It's just an entry," says the actor who has been likened to being India’s answer to Robert De Nero.

Here's a refresher on the Oscar entries that year from IndiaFM.

Kamal Haasan's Hey! Ram has been selected as the Indian entry for the annual Oscar Awards.

The central committee of The Film Federation of India reviewed films such as Astitva, Mohabbatein, Mission Kashmir, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Jaanwar & Hey! Ram and finally recommended Hey! Ram as their choice. Let's see whether Kamal is able to score at the Oscars. By the way, any guesses so as to why Jaanwar was also selected for the review by the central committee. We can only say that man is a social animal, na?

Does the selection of the Oscar submission alternate between major cities or is it always in Chennai?

It has been in Chennai for a long time in the past. I don't know where it is now.
