Highest French honour for Adoor

Shobha Warrier in Chennai | May 23, 2003 18:38 IST

France has conferred its highest honour on director Adoor .

Adoor is the second Indian filmmaker after Satyajit Ray to win the French Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters Award. "It is a great honour because France is one country which treats cinema as high art," Adoor told rediff.com

France has a long history of recognizing exceptional accomplishments in many domains. These décorations, as they are called, include such societies, or Orders, as the National Order of the Legion of Honor, the Order of Academic Palms, and the Order of Arts and Letters.

The Order of Arts and Letters was established in l957 to recognize eminent artists and writers who have contributed significantly to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world. Before the creation of this Order, artists and writers could be officially recognized only through the Legion of Honor, (and that in limited numbers), or the Order of Academic Palms, if they were connected with education. The only recipient of Legion of Honour from India was Satyajit Ray.

The Order of Arts and Letters consists of three ranks: Chevalier, Officier and Commandeur. Commandeur is the highest in the order. The Order of Arts and Letters is given out twice annually to a few hundred people worldwide.

Laureates who reside outside France are generally notified of their award by the French embassy located in their country of residence and usually receive their insignia in a medal ceremony held at the embassy, a French consulate, or the institution with which they have professional ties.

"Two months ago I had a communication from a French institution called...

US film circle buys Adoor's Nizhalkuthu

George Iype in Kochi | March 07, 2003 17:04 IST

Adoor Gopalakrishnan, one of India's finest filmmakers at the international level, has sold the non-commercial rights of his latest film Nizhalkuthu to an art film circle in the United States.

Nizhalkuthu (Shadow Kill), produced by French filmmaker Joel Farges, deals with the mental turmoil of an old executioner. The film was recently screened at the Manosque Film Festival in France.

According to Adoor, who is back from a tour of Europe, his agreement with the New York-based Global Film Initiative will help popularise Nizhalkuthu across America.

Adoor is the first Indian director to have sold his film to GFI, a new foundation formed to promote cross-cultural understanding through cinema. GFI ensures films from the developing world are viewed regularly at cultural institutions throughout the US. It also provides financial help and distribution opportunities for films under-represented in the US market. GFI also helps expose American high school and college students to quality films.

The Rediff Special/Prem Panicker

May 06, 2003

It is the early 1940s; India is on the cusp of Independence.

In a remote village in Nagercoil, on the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, lives Kaliyappan (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), official executioner to the state of Travancore.

It is a family profession, handed down -- by royal decree -- from father to son.

He performs a vital function for the state, yet the state is uncomfortable with his proximity. Thus, while he is given a house and lands, it is outside the boundaries of Travancore, far enough removed so that he does not have to mingle with people he may have to hang one day.

One of his most famous films is Elippathayam (The Rat Trap), which won the BFI's award for "most original and imaginative film to be shown at the National Film Theater, London." (taken from the back cover of the English translation of the script)

Yeah and thats the biggest honor.. I wonder why India doesnt consider it fit to send his films for the Oscar awards... they are more realistic and they can be identified by serious film watchers.. unlike the Crappy DEVDAS *yuck* :ffs:

One more thing... Dragun... who directed the film Kathapurusham ?or Mohanlal's last film ?

Gopalakrishnan directed Kathapurusham. The latest Mohanlal film I've heard of is Kilichundan Mambazham, directed by Priyadarshan.
