Can the fans of Satyajit Ray and the Bollywood blockbuster ever find common ground?
Filmmaker Ismail Merchant thinks so -- Merchant and his producing partner, James Ivory, have put together a festival featuring works from both genres.
"Bollywood Comes to the Hudson," a four-day film festival celebrating a half-century of Indian film, will be presented by the Merchant and Ivory Foundation in association with Time & Space Limited in Hudson, NY, May 22-25, over the Memorial Day weekend. Hudson is around a three-hour drive north of Manhattan.

Satyajit Ray's classic black and white "Apu Trilogy" -- Pather Panchali, Aparajito and The World of Apu -- will be screened, along with Ismail Merchant's early documentary, Helen: Queen of the Nautch Girls, and three contemporary Bollywood films: Saathiya, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Mohabbatein.

Lucky New Yorkers.
First COMPANY.
Now Apu Triology, KKHH, Mohabbatein and SAATHIYA.

Oh come on!

First concentrate on giving exposure to the more artistic films and filmmakers, then go onto commercial entertainers. Company is a good choice of a good film that is neither pure art film nor pure commerical film. Why not Mission Kashmir, for example? If the goal is to help Americans take Indian cinema seriously, Apu Trilogy and Company will do it, KKHH and Mohabbatein may undo it :)

Well, beggars can not be choosers.
In the news article, Ivory Merchant had said that they could get films only from YRF (perhaps free). It's on Ivory Merchant's own initiative.
