Stumped at the BO
The unexpected success of Ken Ghosh's Ishq Vishk gave Bollywood something to look forward to. As a result, Honey Irani's Armaan, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Haasil and Gaurab Pandey's Stumped released this week to high expectations.
But the box office was unmoved.

Despite the presence of stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Preity Zinta, and the hype that surrounding Irani's directorial debut, Armaan did not open well.

The much-delayed Stumped was a no-show.

Haasil received critical acclaim, but it's gritty reality many not go down well with an audience looking for escapist fare.

Note: Films are ranked on the basis of their performance at the box office every week. Though a film may be declared a flop, it may have performed better than the other films that week.

Here is something to cheer about! Sweet romances from talented directors can turn out to be more than your regular fare at the box office. An entertaining score for whatever it is worth can help a film and finally, fresh faces don´t always necessarily mean a flop. Nor do they mean a hit either. A low budget youthful film Ishq Vishk released last week and entertained many. Its chances of surviving are for once not slim thanks to its small budget and it angles of entertainment. Followed by the non-mainstream Pran Jaye Par Shan Na Jaye, a film not aimed at reaching the masses and has not done well, Ishq Vishk is one of the lucky ones.

Film
Ishq Vishk
Starring
Shahid, Shehnaz, Amrita Arora
Released
May 9th, 2003
Summary
Once in a while an unexpected success comes along in the form of college romance. Last year it was Yeh Dil Aashiqana and this year Ishq Vishk may walk away with the honors. As far as the opening is concerned, the movie took a good start on the Ist day, specially in Mumbai. Delhi and many other Metros were also impressive at about 75-80 % (Ist day) but not as good as Mumbai. In Bangalore the movie collected, 80% from 6 prints.

Final Verdict
The extremely low budget flick from Tips may benefit the producers as they are distributing the movie themselves. With around 100 prints released and the music also selling well, Tips may see some profit after the Ist week itself.

Film
Praan Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye
Starring
Raveena Tandon, Sushmita Sen, Namrata Shirodkar, Rinkie Khanna, Diya Mirza, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Shweta Menon, Mahesh Manjrekar and Aman Verma
Released
May 2nd, 2003
Summary
The movie which was only released in 50 % of India ,mainly due to the Producer vs. Distributors face off was unable to click at the box office. Surprisingly, even in Mumbai where such regional themes work, the movie could manage very ordinary collections. First week collections range from
Mumbai- 50% and Jaipur -25 %. The movie was not released in most of North India.

Final Verdict
Even with a budget of 2.5 crore or less, the movie fails to find any takers. May have minimum loss in Mumbai and as it has not been released in many parts of India its fate is already sealed as the verdict is already out.

Film
The Hero
Starring
Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra
Released
April 11th, 2003
Final Verdict
After the IVth week The Hero has grossed around 22 crore at an all India basis. The movie had
decent collections of 42 % in Mumbai and 30 % in Delhi and may finally end at around 24 cr by the end of its run.
