Reel Life Entertainment's Stumped deals with the irony of facts. The film shows the different sides of human behavior and a unique combination of the game of cricket and human ups and downs with the backdrop of the cricket world cup 1999.

Stumped happens in a middle-class housing society with different kinds of characters, a Marathi Family, a Punjabi family, a south Indian whacko and three young kids who are cricket crazy. Along with them stay Major Raghav (Aly Khan) and his wife Reena (Raveena Tandon). There is also a baba (Vallabh Vyas). The film starts off with lot of gags and punches surrounding cricket as the whole colony is crazy. However, one man is against this game.

The actual film kicks off with the first match at the 1999 cricket World Cup between India and South Africa followed by all the other matches. Weaved into the films script is the tale of love between Raghav and Reena, the youngest couple in the society. The film is at its peak when the India vs Pakistan match is in progress and Reena gets the news that her husband Raghav has been presumed dead in the Kargil war.

The film could have been much better had the gags been better from the humour point of view. The director loses control over the screenplay right from the start and the first half gets on your nerves. Even the shots and the look of the film leave much to be desired. There are different sorts of characters, but none of them have been well defined and the excitement surrounding the matches has not been built properly.

Another major drawback in the film is its dialogue; the director fails here again, as he is also the writer. There are some intelligent scenes developed but the dialogues just do not have the necessary punch to create any impact. This also hampers the performances of some very established and experienced performers. Anjan Shrivasta, Vallabh Vyas, Asha Sachdev, Suresh Menon and last but not the least Raveena Tandon all work sincerely but do nothing worthwhile to contribute to the film.

Even the love story shows no impressive movement in the first half. It is only towards the second half that things get moving with flash backs, but too many tracks looks forced and completely out of place. To be honest, barring a handful of sequences, the screenplay abounds in clichés. Some sequences do have logic, but also, at times, some of the sequences seem totally irrelevant.

Another track of a young guy’s infatuation with Raveena is also developed very poorly. If that had worked out better it would have generated some amount of interest in the film. On the positive front a couple of sequences like Suresh Menon cutting the cable wire, Raveena before a TV camera and the journalist dying to have a byte, and Raveena trying to water dead plants. However, the climax definitely has some appeal. The last 20 minutes of the film are brilliant and Raveena steals the show completely.

Editing is crisp in the second half and the cinematography is impressive in some sequences. Another sore point of the film is its music. Barring two songs Ek sapna and Humko to hai pura yakeen, the remaining numbers don't contribute in enhancing the impact. This is all the more surprising since the film boasts of four talented music directors.

Anjan Srivastava and Asha Sachdev do justice to their role. Suresh Menon stands out as the crazy south Indian. Viju Shah, Amrit Pal, Vallabh Vyas fit the bill. The rest of the cast pass muster. Even the Salman Khan item track does not have any impact. Overall, the film does not appeal largely due to the director Gaurab Pandey, who neither has the sense of a screenplay nor has the directorial know how. Stumped could have been a far better film than what it is turned out now. Like most Hindi films, this one also has lots of unwanted things in it. If not for Raveena, the film would have been a disaster right from the word go.

Reel Life Entertainment's STUMPED, directed by Gaurab Pandey, is supposedly a film based on India's favourite game – cricket. But, unfortunately, the film will neither appeal to cricket lovers or those looking for wholesome entertainment.

The World Cup cricket matches are on and some cricket crazy fans in a residential colony are praying for the Indian cricket team to emerge victorious. In this colony reside an army officer [Aly Khan] and his wife [Raveena Tandon].

What could've been an interesting film thanks to a novel idea gets ruined completely due to an unimaginative script and poor direction.

To begin with, the story runs on multiple tracks simultaneously – cricket and war – and at times, a situation like the one witnessed in EK CHHOTI SI LOVE STORY [a kid's attraction to an elderly woman]. Sadly, not a single facet really strikes a chord.

Depicting the craze for the World Cup much after the World Cup fever has died down, serves no purpose. Also, unlike LAGAAN, which actually depicted a match, in this film the match is mostly restricted to showing glimpses on television.

Weaving the army man's saga in the plot was a novel idea, but the implementation is completely lifeless. Besides, this plot being amateurish, makes it appear as forced in the goings-on.

The Summer of 42 angle, however, does bring in a few interesting moments, but not enough to keep the viewer's attention arrested throughout.

Music is the only saving grace of the enterprise, although the picturisation of the songs leaves a lot to be desired. Cinematography is functional.

Raveena Tandon does an okay job, but has not been photographed well. A power-house of talent like Aly Khan is completely wasted. Amongst the character artistes, none register any kind of an impact.

On the whole, STUMPED is a loser all the way.

Rating:- *.

'Stumped' by a forgettable experiment

Offbeat films are the latest fad in Bollywood.

Granted, the audience is bored of conventional love stories and there is an overwhelming need for new ideas. But experimenting for the sake of it can be disastrous. A spate of badly made offbeat films will easily kill the audiences' newly awakened risk appetite.

Stumped, produced by Raveena Tandon and directed by Gaurab Pandey, falls in this category.

The film has an interesting premise. It is the story of a woman, Reema Seth (Raveena), whose husband, Major Raghav (Aly Khan), is called away to the battlefront during the Kargil war, even as her neighbourhood, full of cricket-crazy fans, is looking forward to World Cup 1999.

As she spends her days in agony, trapped in the uncertainty of not knowing if her husband will come back alive, her neighbours are oblivious to her plight. Their only concern is how India will fare in the World Cup.

The film's ensemble cast includes Anjan Shrivastava, Asha Sachdev, Suresh Menon and Salman Khan in a single-song appearance.

Written and directed by debutant Pandey, Stumped lacks a seamless narrative and emotional high points. It has too many sub-plots -- an adolescent neighbour with a crush on Reema, a stereotypical south Indian chasing an Anglo-Indian woman, a Punjabi household where the man of the house is unwilling to buy a television set -- all of which are unequivocally boring.

Pandey had the lofty aim of showing that Kargil was more important than the World Cup, but comes nowhere near achieving it. There is no interplay of the exhilaration of watching India win a cricket match versus the turmoil of a woman whose husband is away at war.

Raveena, as producer, has paid little attention to detail. The sets (Tarun Agasthi) are extremely tacky, especially when the action shifts to the battlefield.

When her husband is declared missing in action, Raveena suddenly shifts to stark white saris and salwar-kameezes that jar terribly.

The acting is mediocre. As Major Seth, Aly barely registers in what turns out to be a fairly curtailed role. Raveena's character is so underdeveloped that she cannot be faulted for not having much to do in the film.

As for the music, it is strictly for the tone-deaf. Stumped has three songs, one of which sees Salman in a much-hyped special appearance. He bares his torso, shakes his butt, and gets jiggy, but just a little melody could have helped the song a lot more.

Pandey, credited with story and direction, solely bears the cross for Stumped's failure. His script is incoherent and lacks good character development and memorable dialogues. As director, he is unable to make up even a tad for the script's shortcomings.

In an interview to rediff.com published today, Pandey talked about how Indian cricketers were roped in to 'transmit important messages'. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Kapil Dev have pitched in. Sadly, like everything else in the movie, this jars as well. It seems contrived and makes no impact, though the movie begins with these clips.

In all, Stumped should be regarded as an experiment best forgotten in the lab.

Thats the best compliment that can be given to this film...nothing more and nothing else.... man you cant triviliaze the Kargil War and bracket it with a game of cricket (even though both these events happened at the same time :( ).

One thing I dont understand, why didn't Raveena Tandon give more attention to the screenplay and the script.... after her flawless performance in Satta ?.. Call that misplaced judgement !
