The Jury

Outlook asked 25 leading Indian film directors to draw up their personal lists of the 10 best Hindi films of independent India. They are (in alphabetical order):

Anil Sharma Anurag Kashyap Aparna Sen Farhan Akhtar Gautam Ghose Govind Nihalani John Mathew Mathan Karan Johar Kundan Shah Madhur Bhandarkar Mrinal Sen N. Chandra Rajiv Menon Rakesh Roshan Ramesh Sippy Sanjay Chhel Sanjay Leela Bhansali Santosh Sivan Shakti Samanta Shyam Benegal Subhash Ghai Tanuja Chandra Tinu Anand Vidhu Vinod Chopra Vikram Bhatt

Not all of them named their full quota of 10. This is why the total number of votes is 236, and not 250. Two of our jury included their own films in their lists. These were removed while tabulating the results

I wonder, which 25 films got a vote from it's own director or a very close friend?? Take those self votes away, then which films will make the grade??

This list is so typical of Bollywood, self (including friends and associates) promotion as always. It is hard to imagine any sane person selecting some of the films mentioned here in their all time best 10 films. If you ask me some these films don't belong even in the Top 100 of all time. The most glaringly out of place on this list is the absolutely pedestrian Sadak. By the way has anyone noticed that there are five, yes, five films from Mahesh Bhatt on this list and not one of them should probably qualify for even the Top 100, except maybe one, which is Saaransh. Don't tell me there is nothing fishy about this list.

I have to say that this Forum has a very particular point of view, what some might call a masculine outlook (nothing wrong with that!). The lists of personal Top 10s that I've read here have an inordinate number of gangster films.

Another Bollywood Forum that I have read, has a very feminine outlook, and at that Forum, KKHH is considered #1 of all-time.

The list above has an inordinate numbers of 1950s/1960s films. While I think that Mother India, Guide and Mughal-E-Azam are good films, I think that Lagaan is clearly superior to any of them.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam among the top films? Looks like Sooraj Barjatya and SLB got their votes in!

This list is soo inaccurately put together I don't know where to being? While I'm glad to see that 3 Guru Dutt films made it to the top 10, but everything else doesn't seem right for many reasons. Like few have already mentioned, I too wouldn't be surprised if people have voted there own films as amongst the best, however -- Fellini also thought that his film 8 ½ was amongst the 10 greatest films ever made, but than again, not many would disagree with him. And many people who have voted on this list are not as creative as Fellini either(especially Karan Johar).

What's with the Karan Johar/KKHH bashing? I see far worse films and directors up there. AAA is a terribly made film with juvenile gags. Even Sholay has moments of unsophisticated silly comedy - the same kind for which everyone bashed Asoka. What the hell are Border, Namak Halal, Yaadon Ki Baarat doing there? KKHH looks like a Truffaut masterpiece in front these...

A list like this is always subjective. Even I don't agree with some submissions on the AFI 100...such as the gimmicky Silence of the Lambs. That's what makes these lists interesting, always open to discussion. I'm glad Mother India was #1.

This seems to be more a list of favorite films than great films.

That is perhaps because the average age of the jury is perhaps 45+.....they grew up watching these films in their impressionable years....

I absolutely agree with you that LAGAAN (IMHO might i safely add :-) ) is better than both MOTHER INDIA and GUIDE.......though they are perhaps in the same league as far as emotional content goes....LAGAAN scores in its uniqueness of premise, conflict and resolution....HANDS DOWN !!!
