The British Film Institute (BFI) have consulted a variety of experts, critics academics and practitioners to compile a top twenty list of the best Bollywood movies, released up to the end of 2001 from across the region and their Diaspora communities.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the mega blockbuster 'Sholay', which has been labeled the biggest Bollywood movie ever, has topped the list. The movie stars real life couples Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan and Dharmendra and Hema Malini.

The two runners up in the poll were Satyajit Ray's critically acclaimed 'Pather Panchali' and Mehboob Khan's classic 'Mother India'.

Some modern day super hits also found a place in the top twenty, including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at number twelve, Bombay at number fourteen, Lagaan at number at sixteen.

Nice compiled list, but since when were Satyajit Ray films ever considered "Bollywood" ??? Anyhow, Its also nice to see that Amitabh Bachchan rocks this best of all time list with most of his movies up there more than any other actor.
