It's not a Bollywood film but can we get this type of restoration to our Bollywood oldies ??

Have you heard of METROPOLIS, a 1927 silent film from Germany, the very first Science Fiction film.

They restored it in 2010 to 145-148 min out of 155 min original (there also was a premiere cut at 210 min), with great effort. It's also avail on Blu Ray now. (Prior recent versions were 80-120 min range). Audio used to be Live Orchestra, but now the restored version has sound recorded on the film.

The restored version has been running in the Art Circuit Cinemas. This week I'll get a chance to see it in Edmonton.

IMDB links:

The second link comments that "Restoration turned this from classic to one of the all time greatest?"

Saw it Yesterday, in Theatre. Great film. First Sci-Fi plus serious social, mystery, suspense, romance, item number (LOL), double role, villain, man vs machine, master vs subject, father vs reformist son, floods, machine cloned into human, etc etc.

The 1927 film was restored with great effort to 145 min of original footage (out of 155 min orig release), found recently in Argentina on a 16mm film print. 90-120 min versions had been around and I can't see if any of the footage could be cut and still have a smooth flow in the film.

Feature presentation was 148-149 min of which 145-146 min was the original film and the remaining 3-4 min accounts for the restoration comments etc.

It has been running in this old style theatre (800-900 capacity) for a while, and the theatre was mostly full. After the screening, the film did get a standing ovation.
