Probably you have an older edition of the Shemaroo version. Like something manufactured in the early 2000s. Because the latter and most recent releases have the titles redone (probably Shemaroo has done them on their own).

I don't think the newer editions have wear and tear in the titles. The movie itself has a lot of wear, tear and wobbles.

But the PQ in Shemaroo is pretty inconsistent - certain scenes are sharp, while others are highly blurred.

Is this problem resolved in the source you got from the UK?

The sound in Shemaroo itself is quite crisp. But dropouts are there for sure.

India's not going to do anything to the classics.. Lets see what comes up

Oh right. Shemaroo did a bad computer created version of the title credits. I don't count that as a restoration as they killed one of the best opening credits segments in Indian cinema!!!

I agree. That's absolutely killing the classic. I mean how can they replace what the director wanted in his film?
Injustice!
Shemaroo blindly follows what ignorant customers want (cropping, editing, etc.) without giving a damn to what the director intended to have..

For eg., cropping : they crop off 16:9 films for 4:3 screens instead of letterboxing the images - that's what customers want. Their screen filled, to hell with the actual picture.
Editing: they heavily edited films like sangam,MNJ, etc. - that's what customers want. Shorter movies, as theyfind long ones boring.

And the fake 5.1 mix customers want, to hell with how the actual sound meant to be.

Even NTSC DVDs are what customers want. So Shemaroo uses PAL telecines and then converts it to NTSC using field averaging...

A list like this would be too long...

Yes. But a snapshot of a TV screen. Snapped by my nephew in the UK.

Not sure where to share this ... but this seems like a good place.

I have a lot of the old Channel 4 broadcasts on VHS and have been working with a friend to convert to DVD slowly (very slowly). This is in lieu of having decent quality DVDs of these classic movies. Many were never available on DVD or some that have been made available are cut down versions and in bad quality.

Check out this page for more details of what is available to date. More to be added as my friend continues his work on them.

This is probably the best you can get with VHS as the source - so don't expect miracles. But if you have any interest in the older hard to find movies there may be something here for you. The quality varies based on the source and other people are contributing VHS and other sources over time. All of the movies have been given a proper conversion to NTSC - so no Pal speed-up. All are subtitled and many of these movies were never available on DVD (and probably will never be available on DVD from any source) so good to grab these for your collection while you can.

Muz, do you have "Khoon Bhari Mang" in decent quality? I've just seen the Eros version which is a crap VHS to DVD converted.

Also could you please try to post a few screenshots from "Pakeezah"?

Bhaskar - is there any chance you could upload screenies? 'Cause you've done that for the other films that were telecast.

Thanks
