'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani's director Ayan Mukherjee wants to remake grandpa's 'Love in Simla'
17 May 2013

Director Ayan Mukherjee would love to remake his grandfather Sashadhar Mukherjee's 1960 film 'Love in Simla'.

"I loved 'Love in Simla'. I don't think many people are aware of it. If I would ever have to remake a film, it would be this movie as I loved it a lot. I have watched it many times," Ayan said in an interview.

'Love In Simla', a 1960 film, was produced by Sashadhar Mukherjee and his Filmalaya production house. Directed by RK Nayyar, it had the producer's son, Joy Mukherjee, in lead opposite Sadhana.

The film was a huge hit.

Since Ayan hails from a filmi family - grandfather was a filmmaker and his father is popular actor Deb Mukherjee - it was an obvious step for him to enter films, but he had to struggle.

"It was very natural but complicated. Older people in the industry talk highly of my grandfather. Unfortunately I never saw his success. In my father's generation a lot of them worked in films but they existed somewhere on the outskirts of Bollywood," Ayan said.

"While growing up there was an influence of films. I grew up listening words like screenplay, editing, Satyajit Ray or Bimal Roy. There was a desire to be in films but I did not have an access to stars. It was little bit of an insider and outsider. It played a role in developing my passion for films but it did not help me much in entering films," he said.

Ayan also said that if given a chance, he would love to make a film with his cousins Kajol and Rani.

Ayan made his directorial debut with 'Wake up Sid', which was a hit, and now is looking forward to the release of his second romantic film 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', which has Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Has Bumper Opening
Friday 31st May 2013

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has taken a bumper opening across India at multiplexes. The opening at multiplexes can be compared with Ek Tha Tiger which was a holiday release. It is practically opened 90-100% across the board and multiplexes which tend to start slow have also started strongly.

It is not a holiday release so the film will slow in the late afternoon as this sort of pace is normally only kept when it is holiday. The film was always expected to open huge in the metros but the multiplexes in Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI have also opened to excellent collections.

The single screen opening is also likely to be very good though not like the multiplexes. The opening is sure to be the second highest non holiday opening of all time (beating films like Ra.One, Don 2, Rowdy Rathore etc) and the record non holiday 19.50 crore nett figure of Dabangg 2 is also not safe but that will depend on the range of contribution from single screens.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Is HISTORIC In Delhi City
Friday 31st May 2013

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is likely to create history in Delhi city as the film has started with just unbelievable collections. The collections will easily beat Dabangg 2 which collected around 1.50 crore nett in Delhi city and will even surpass films like Bodyguard and Agneepath in Delhi city which were major holiday releases.

The craze is such for the film in the capital that it is likely to cross 2 crore nett in Delhi city which so far only Ek Tha Tiger has managed but that was on Independence Day Holiday.

In major North India cities like Delhi city, Gurgaon and Chandigarh the film is sure to smash the non holiday opening day records of Dabangg 2 and will be second only to Ek Tha Tiger and that also due to the holiday factor.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Has RECORD Weekend
3 June 2013

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has smashed the initial weekend box office record by collecting around the 62-63 crore nett mark.

It is the first time that a film has collected over 60 crore nett in three days. The film has had the highest collections ever for a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The previous best was the 58.50 crore nett approx total of Dabangg 2

It is noteworthy that such a huge amount has come without an holiday. The film has shown unbelievable trending with growth on Saturday and Sunday from such a huge figure on Friday which means the sky is the limit for the film.

The film did phenomenal business in all circuits with the biggest circuits seeing all weekend records smashed.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Super Strong On Monday
3 June 2013

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has maintained superb figures on Monday morning and afternoon and is heading for a huge Monday total. The way the film is collecting so far on Monday a 9 crore nett looks assured and the collections could even go over 10 crore nett depending on what happens in the rest of the day.

There have been only three films in the history of Hindi cinema that have collected 10 crore or more on Monday when it is not a national holiday and they are Dabangg 2, Dabangg and Three idiots.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani may join this list and even if it does not make get to 10 crore nett it will be very close.

Ranbir Kapoor Breaks Salman Khan's Box Office Record
3 June 2013

Over the last 72 hours, Ranbir Kapoor has conquered the box office beyond anyone’s wildest expectations.

While the trade was expecting Karan Johar’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to open big, the actual collections have been simply mind-boggling.

On Friday, the film took a cool Rs 19 crore plus opening; making it the second-highest, non-holiday opener, just behind Dabangg 2. The film received positive reviews and a largely encouraging word of mouth response. But large sections of the trade expected a slight drop on Saturday, as is the case with many big films.

But YJHD went against the trend and showed healthy growth on Saturday by collecting more than Rs 20 crore. On Sunday the film added more steam to its victorious run and raked in even bigger numbers (approx Rs 23 crore), making it the first film in the history of Bollywood to have touched the Rs 60 crore mark in its opening weekend in India alone.

While some sections have been insisting that Dabangg 2 had collected more in its weekend, the alleged difference in numbers is negligible. While Dabangg 2 had the advantage of a Christmas week and a mass-friendly, star-centric theme, YJHD has broken records despite not having a festival release.

This puts YJHD’s weekend numbers above Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, RaOne, Bodyguard and several other biggies that have made it to the 100-crore-club in the last few years.

With the film connecting with the youth in a big way, the trade expects the momentum to continue over the weekdays too and even though YJHD faces competition from a well-promoted Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (next week), the hundred-crore-mark now seems to be just a formality for this romcom.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has also done very well overseas and has cemented the award-winning 'Rockstar's' position as a salable solo-hero.

As of now, YJHD has beaten all other 2013 releases by a neat margin.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani crosses Rs. 100 crore mark, creates history
7 June 2013

The industry saw it coming, and fans made it happen - Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone-starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has become the first film to cross Rs.100 crore mark within just a week of its release.

After a bumper opening of Rs.19.45 crore in the country, and an opening weekend of a whopping Rs.62.11 crore, the Ayan Mukerji directorial continued running to packed houses in India.

"100 crore. And still counting," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

The youthful romantic entertainer released May 31, and saw audiences who came either besotted by the movie's fun and frolicsome trailer, or by sheer word of the mouth.

A hit among the youths and elders alike, the movie has won the audience's heart with its well-suited cast, beautiful cinematography in snow-laden mountains, earthy locales of Udaipur and more, peppy music, exciting dance moves and a predictable, but well-executed script.

If the movie minted Rs.19.45 crore on its opening day, Saturday and Sunday brought in business of Rs.20.16 crore and Rs.22.5 crore, respectively.

The movie, produced by Karan Johar, also has Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur in more than supporting roles to back this heartwarming story about family, friends and love.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Grosses 135 Crore In Ten Days
10 June 2013

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has grossed nearly 135 crore nett as the second weekend came in at around 28.25 crore nett. The second weekend figure is the second highest of all time, ahead of Dabangg (2010) which grossed 24.25 crore nett but behind Three Idiots which grossed 33 crore nett.

The film is fantastic in all circuits with Delhi/UP a standout collecting phenomenal figures with a total of over 30 crore nett in just ten days which already makes it the fifth highest grossing film ever in Delhi/UP and the 40.50 crore nett record of Ek Tha Tiger is very much in its sights.

The film is now looking a distributor share of 90 crore as a worse case scenario with possibilities to touch 100 crore if the third and fourth weeks remain as steady as the second weekend.

'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Emerges An ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER
24 June 2013

Whether it is competition from new releases like Fukrey and Raanjhanaa or heavy rains that has lashed the country – absolutely nothing has stopped Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani at the domestic and overseas box office.

The film has crossed the 180 crore mark in India, making it the first ‘All Time Blockbuster’ of 2013. YJHD is also Ranbir Kapoor’s first All Time Blockbuster, his previous biggest hit was ‘Raajneeti’, a multi-starrer that did exceedingly well at the box office and last year’s award-winning film ‘Barfi’.

The film is also a massive blockbuster in the overseas market, where it has collected around 58 crore in 24 days since it’s release.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani India Collections:

Week 1 – 106.6 crore
Week 2 – 46.85 crore
Week 3 – 21.55 crore
4th Weekend – 5.5 crore (approx)

Total Collections (24 days) – 180.5 crore

Verdict – All Time Blockbuster

Not too long ago, questions were being asked if Ranbir Kapoor films can find an audience in smaller towns, the B and C centres. The universal success of YJHD has more than answered the question – Ranbir is now an All-India superstar and his next release Besharam, directed by Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap, will be one of the most awaited films of the year.
