Music review Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: Slow Start
14 June 2013

The music of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag comes with the baggage of being helmed by director, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, whose last two films produced two of the best Hindi movie soundtracks in recent times, Rang De Basanti and Delhi 6. There is no doubting the filmmaker's intuitive sense of music, but this album tests whether he is able to channelise it without A R Rahman's presence. While Mehra gets the able support of lyricist Prasoon Joshi, he collaborates with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the really talented composer trio that seem to have lost direction in the last few films. the album starts off with the serene Gurbani, (sung by Daler Mehndi) with the purity and robustness of the early morning prayers. However, nothing prepares you for the introductory electric guitar riffs of Zinda, a heavy rock song that is surged to a dazzling force of nature with Joshi's lyrics breathing fire within its champion protagonist, Koyla kaala hain chattano ne paala hain.

A delectable groove of guitars blends in a delicate fusion with the sufi lyrics in Mere yaar and Javed Bashir's vocals are rough beauty. songs such as Maston ka jhund and Slow motion angreza fail to go beyond their situational settings, because of their ordinary melody lines. While the former's Punjabi is too crude to be musically enjoyable, the latter despite a great arrangement — the constant mandolin strums and a retro vibe — fails to leave any mark. The title song Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is more word-heavy with its folksy tune (sung by Arif Lohar) revolving around the lyrics. Bashir remarkably moulds his voice for the soulful and sublime O rangrez, which has the simplicity and beauty of a village song, accompanied with the elegant cameos of the tabla, harmonium and the sarangi. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a patchy album. With a couple of excellent songs, it fails to go beyond the promise that the rest may work better with the film.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Has Good First Day
Saturday 13th July 2013

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag picked up from the afternoon onwards to record good first day business of around 8-8.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The film showed improvement with each show with the late shows recording 70-80% occupancies. The business was below the mark at single screens but multiplexes did good business.

The film performed best in Delhi city and East Punjab with very good collections in both areas. The Delhi/UP circuit overall scored big in Delhi city but was the opposite in UP as collections were poor in the state.

The weekend business of the film can go to around 30 crore nett on normal weekend growth. The film also collected 1 crore nett in paid previews on Thursday.

Two Thumbs Up!!

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has impressed the entire family, which is quite a microcosm of Indian Audience :-)

And watch out for

i) director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's cameo, as the pilot of the flight to Australia that's carrying Milkha and team there ;-)

ii) Shooting locations in Patiala (YPS School and NIS Patiala)

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' Has 32 Crore Plus Weekend
Monday 15th July 2013

Bhaag Milka Bhaag grossed 32.25 crore nett approx on its first weekend. The breakdown is as follows:

Thursday - 1 crore

Friday - 8.50 crore

Saturday - 10.50 crore

Sunday - 12.25 crore

The film picked up on Friday and there was no looking back as collections got stronger over the weekend. The film is a big hit and time will tell how big. The Delhi/Punjab area has had a fantastic weekend due to the local flavour. The collections in these two areas are only second to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani this year.

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' Emerges SUPER HIT
22 July 2013

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' has emerged a SUPER HIT and the third biggest hit of 2013 after 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and 'Aashiqui 2' as it saw rock steady collections in its second weekend of around 16 crore nett.

The film continued its excellent run in Delhi and Punjab and could well be amongst the top ten grossing films of all time in Delhi/Up and East Punjab. The ten day business of the film is 69.50 crore nett approx.

The film has been given a tax exemption in Maharashtra and although it has not done well in Maharashtra outside Mumbai city and Pune, the contribution from these two cities is huge for Maharashtra. This could help the film touch the 100 crore nett mark.
