'Avengers' International Box Office: Marvel Blockbuster Explodes In Overseas Debut
26 April 2012

"The Avengers" doesn't come out in America until May 4, but the Marvel blockbuster is already setting records overseas.

The Joss Whedon film opened in some foreign markets on Wednesday and has already earned $17.1 million, according to THR.

"Marvel's The Avengers" had the second biggest opening ever in Australia (behind only "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2"), and earned the best-ever opening day in New Zealand. "The Avengers" also grabbed $3 million in France.

Based on box-office tracking figures, "The Avengers" should be huge. Projections for the film's opening weekend top out near $150 million, but even that could be on the low-end. After all, the reviews for "The Avengers" have been stellar and audiences seem to have a pent-up anticipation to see Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk together onscreen.

The aforementioned "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" owns the all-time record for opening weekend grosses with $169.1 million. "The Dark Knight" and recently-released "Hunger Games" follow in second and third, with $158.4 and $152.5 million, respectively. With its 3D-enhanced ticket prices and comfy summer kick-off release date, could "Marvel's The Avengers" beat even the Boy Who Lived? It's possible, but whatever record "The Avengers" set by assembling could be short lived: "The Dark Knight Rises," the sequel to "The Dark Knight," looms in July as another possible record breaker.

"Marvel's The Avengers" hits theaters on May 4. The film will close out the Tribeca Film Festival on April 28.

The Avengers Takes Excellent Opening in India
27 April 2012

The Avengers has taken an excellent opening across the country of 80% plus. It was even 100% at some theatres. The film has been released on 800 screens in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu and all versions opened to excellent collections. In Bangalore the film has seen a phenomenal opening.

The all India first day collections of The Avengers will challenge the first day collections of Tezz even though the former is just a 800 screen release and the later a 2000 screen release. The Avengers may even surpass Tezz on day one.

The film will also challenge for the biggest Hollywood opening of all time in India which was Mission Impossible 4 released last December which had huge publicity in India.

'The Avengers' Breaks International Box Office Records

The film grossed $178.4 million at the international box office over the weekend, despite not having opened in three of the biggest markets yet: the US, China and Russia.

"Marvel's The Avengers" may not open in the U.S. until May 4, but the summer superhero flick is already breaking international records.

Joss Whedon's Marvel adventure brought in an estimated $178.4 million overseas. Joss Whedon's superhero spectacular earned a whopping $24.7 million in the U.K., Disney's best three-day weekend ever there.

It also took in $19.7 million from Australia, a record $15.9 million from Mexico and another $12.9 million from Korea. In addition to Mexico, "The Avengers" opening was the biggest ever in Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

The numbers are even more impressive for the Marvel-Disney collaboration, considering the film won't open in China and Russia until next week, when it opens in the U.S. It will play in Japan in August.

The Avengers to dominate US box office this weekend
3 May 2012

The US summer movie season opens with a blast Friday as Disney's much-anticipated, $220 million "The Avengers" storms onto more than 4,000 domestic screens with expectations that it could earn between $150 million and $170 million in its first weekend. The record is held by last year's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" at $169.2 million.

Directed by Joss Whedon, "The Avengers" unleashes Marvel Studio's pantheon of superheros to save the world in 3-D and IMAX. The PG-13 film, which has already passed the $280 million mark overseas, stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo.

The Avengers makes US box office history, scores biggest ever opening weekend
6 May 2012

* The Avengers overtakes Harry Potter finale with $200m takings during opening weekend in the United States.
* The Avengers has so far taken $641m worldwide.

Hollywood's latest adaptation from the world of comics, The Avengers, has smashed the box office record for the biggest US opening weekend by a margin befitting a film trading heavily on cacophonous superhero-style walloping.

The $200.3m (£124m) debut is by far the biggest American opening to date, shooting past the previous record of $169.2m for the debut of last year's Harry Potter finale.

A $200m total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so The Avengers has effectively redefined the standards for a blockbuster debut.

"If The Avengers is any indication, we're going to see a leap rather than a gentle little nudge into new territory, and the lineup is there to justify it going forward," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of the Imax cinema chain.

The film – renamed Avengers Assemble for the UK and Irish market, to avoid confusion with the vintage TV series – opened in 39 countries, excluding the US, last week.

Crowds in the US were so anxious to see the film on giant Imax screens that Foster said the company had only one problem: it ran out of seats to sell.

The record weekend was the culmination of years of careful planning by Marvel Studios, which has included teasers for an Avengers dream team collaboration in its solo superhero adventures.

Directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), The Avengers features Robert Downey Jnr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury.

The Avengers added $151.5m outside the US over the weekend to bring its total to $441.5m since it began opening internationally a week ago.

That figure raised the film's worldwide haul to $641.8m in barely a week and a half, more than its Marvel superhero forerunners Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America took during their entire runs.

When the final US weekend count is released on Monday, The Avengers will be the first movie to haul in $200m in a single weekend in the US if the estimates currently being put out by distributor Disney hold up.

The Avengers is the first of three superhero blockbusters coming this summer: The Amazing Spider-Man is released on 3 July and The Dark Knight Rises wraps up the current Batman series on 20 July.

Until the Harry Potter finale, 2008's The Dark Knight had held the revenue record with a $158.4m debut. Before that, the record-holder was 2007's Spider-Man 3 with $151.1m.

As admission prices rise, Hollywood's record-breakers often take in more money but sell fewer tickets than previous blockbusters. But The Avengers took in so much money that it has become the undisputed champion among debuts.

'The Avengers' Grosses Over $1 Billion Worldwide
13 May 2012

* The Avengers made more money in its second weekend than any other movie in history!
* The Avengers surpassed $1 billion after just 19 days in worldwide release

After its $207.4-million debut broke the record for the biggest opening ever — not adjusting for inflation — "The Avengers" had another phenomenal weekend in theaters. In its second weekend of domestic release, the film featuring Marvel comic book characters such as the Hulk, Iron Man and Thor raked in an additional $103.2 million, according to an estimate from distributor Walt Disney Pictures. That means the movie made more on its second weekend than any other film in history, a record previously held by the three-day $75.6 million made by "Avatar."

But "The Avengers" passed an even bigger milestone this weekend: It crossed the $1-billion mark at the global box office. Playing in 54 foreign countries this weekend, the movie grossed $95.4 million, raising its international total to $628.9 million. Combined with the film's $373.2-million domestic tally, the movie surpassed $1 billion after just 19 days in worldwide release.

'The Avengers' Becomes Third-Highest-Grossing Movie Ever
2 June 2012

Box Office Milestone: 'The Avengers' Becomes No. 3 Pic of All Time With $1.331 Billion

On Friday, the Disney and Marvel Studios' tentpole surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to become the third-biggest tile of all time at the worldwide box office with a cume of $1.331 billion.

Avengers also shattered another record domestically on Friday, surpassing The Dark Knight to become the third top grossing film of all time with a cume of $538.1 million. Dark Knight earned $533 million domestically.

Internationally, Avengers has now earned $793.2 million, the fifth-best showing of all time.
