First, Agneepath is not a film that should be re-made: It works because of an iconic performance, not because of a screenplay or plot that begs to be re-told. Second, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan either must be played by Amitabh Bachchan (it would be a joke to see Abhishek try it), or left alone. If you're intent to re-do the project, call it something else so you don't have a line of people running to make "comparisons."

Somehow, I feel, if this effort ever takes off, it'll end up akin to Ram Gopal Varma's, Aag...

I kinda agree with Commando. For me, the original Agneepath is a CLASSIC. Two reasons: Amitabh's throaty Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and the rustic but commercial style courtesy of the late Mukul S. Anand. There's not much that is novel in Agneepath's story, but the delivery was brilliant. (Saddening though that the movie flopped in India, and they tried to save its box office fate by re-releasing with a standard style AB redub.)

The ending scene where Vijay pulls along his shell-shocked mom (a brilliant Rohini Hattangadi) is a scene that is ingrained in my mind forever. "Ae maa, ghar chal..."

Exactly. What's a "re-make" to do? If it copies the style of the film, it isn't a director's personal imagining of a work: it's a rip-off, and it deserves to be immediately and heartily berated by all. If it does "its own thing," fine, but why even maintain relation with the 1990 picture? The movie's a simple "revenge story" — hell, much of Agneepath comes from Deewaar, much of which comes from Gunga Jumna.

Anyway, this project seems still a bit distant. Let's see how My Name Is Khan shapes up (and let's hope it does so better than did Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna...).

Karan Johar is scared to direct the remake of his father's 1991 hit 'Agneepath', famous for portraying Amitabh Bachchan as the "angry young man".

"I am happy directing films on love, romance and drama. That's what I do best. I don't think I will be good at an action film. So I am not taking the reins of the film in my hand," Karan told us.

He has roped in director Karan Malhotra to helm the movie. Currently, the team is working towards giving final touches to the script, after which they will approach the cast before finally launching the project.

From Hindustan Times:

http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed ... 58930.aspx

Quote:
The script has been locked but the cast hasn’t been decided upon yet. Agneepath will be set in the 1990s and will be reworked appropriately,” said Karan Johar, the producer-director who helms Dharma Productions, at the recently concluded Hindustan Times’ Mumbai First Conclave’s Entertainment Debate, ‘Does Size Matter’.
Could Vidya Balan (sitting next to him at the conclave) be part of the film being directed by Karan Malhotra? “It’s too early to comment on the cast. I can tell you that Agneepath will be a remake, not to be confused with a sequel,” clarified Johar, who will soon start work on the third season of his celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan, for Star World.
The show kicks off towards the end of the year. Johar agreed that it would take that much time to get the show on the floors because “coordinating the guests’ dates is the biggest task behind putting the show together. The combinations have to work out. Once that’s sorted, the show will take off.”
Like the first two seasons, would friend Shah Rukh Khan flag off Season 3 too? Johar asserts, “I’d love to have Shah Rukh and his son Aryan over. He’s just 12 and loves Katrina Kaif. He’s someone I’d love to see on my show

I'm intrigued to see how this turns out.........I'm tempted to write it off, and possibly the only reason I haven't is that Karan Johar hasn't had a bad track record as producer - Wake Up Sid and Kurbaan were good films in my opinion, and Dostana was the sort of timepass film I think it was intended to be. Although if he wanted to remake a film, I would have personally chosen one that was a bit older.

Hrithik is apparently the lead in the Agneepath remake, with Mithun's character being taken out of the film:

Sanjay Dutt is Kancha Cheena in the remake
EDIT: 28-Jan-2012: He is simply Kancha, no "Cheena" in his name.
