Comments/ Info/ Confirmation needed:
Please provide info if any of zulmies goes to the screenings.
(So far I've bought ticket for Sangam Jul 3, may see more if Jul 3 screening satisfying)

Are Film Run Times really correct ??

Is what TIFF calls "DIGITAL presentation", as good as 35 MM or better ?? Or, is it just a DVD ?? (TIFF claims it to be Hi Def)

--------------------------------------

I recall Raj Kapoor saying, in one of the interviews, that No Film Print of Ram Teri Ganga Mailee was ever sent overseas, to protect from Piracy. Even now, it's Digital print. I suspect DIGITAL means they'll be using DVD ?? TIFF claims "High Def".

No 238 min version at TIFF. Not even 213/ 221 min YRF version.
What they showed was the same what they showed back in 2004, listing as 238 min and presenting Shemaroo version (or even shorter) that's about 187 min. (TIFF says 170 min)

Shemaroo Sangam DVD = 187 min

YRF Sangam DVD = 213 min

Esquire VHS = 223 min Shemaroo DVD and Esq VHS, both run at same speed. So, no speed difference between the DVD and VHS.

Canadian Film Institute/ HC India screening (July 18, 2004) listed to be = 238 min (I'll post actual film run time in this screening after watching its screening.

No Luck here.

I stayed untill the end of 'O Mere Sanam' song. cfi screening clocked at 166 min where as it's 195 min on my VHS. Looks like Shemaroo version.

It was a worn out and faded print. Still, watching a 35 mm screening is miles ahead of the best of the best present day DVDs.

Saturday June 23 was IIFA and eitrher Friday or may be Sunday was all that Kapoor brothers were there to inaugurate an exhibition on Raj Kapoor at TIFF. Invitees only. They (TIFF staff) told me that Kapoor brothers went back to India after the RK exhibit inauguration.

Well, Sangam screening was too disappointing to me as it was the shortest version around.
These seems to be no attempt at all finding best print available, forget about restoring original content.

Still, Mera Naam Joker and Ram Teri Ganga Mailee might be worthwhile watching at TIFF.

Mera Naam Joker:

It's listed at 224 min. I guess they picked up this run-time from YRF DVD. 224 min YRF DVD on film will be 233 min that we know at least has totally uncut part 3 of MNJ. Hoping it's that version they show, it'll be worthwhile. Also to note is that Shemaroo DVD has pretty good PQ (Pseudo-Prog) for part 1 & 2 but has terrible PQ for part 3 that's field averaged (YRF DVD is all field averaged bad PQ). PLUS, IT'S A BRAND NEW 35 mm PRINT.

Let's see what we get.

Ram Teri Ganga Mailee

Even though it's a digital presentation, I think it's the first time they are screening this film on big screen, in USA/ Canada. I never saw this film on big screen.
