Back with another question - are there any older Bollywood films where the heroine is the main protagonist? In HK cinema, you can often find a swordswoman as the main character. From the Bollywood films I've seen from the 70's, the female characters are more like the damsel in distress types. Are there any or many movies where the heroine is not quite so passive & is more proactive? One that I can think of is Don - the female lead learns martial arts & seeks revenge, but Amitabha is really the star of that film. Are there any movies where the woman is the headliner?

Many Thanks!!

Sure, there are many films like this. Can't remember all the names at the moment, but here are some that I can think of quickly:

Seeta Aur Geeta (Hema Malini)
Intaqam (Sadhna)
Sadhna (Vyjantimala)
Hunterwali
(I'm sure films like Bari Behen, Chhoti Behen, Majhli Didi etc also will fall in this category)

Yeah there are loads ... some that come to mind:

Geeta Mera Naam (Sadhana), Amrapali (Vyjayanthimala), Amar Jyothi (Durgha Khote), Duniya Na Mane (Shanta Apte), Pakeezah(?) (Meena Kumari), Umrao Jaan (Rekha), Mili (Jaya Bhadhuri), Mother India (Nargis), Razia Sultan (Hema Malini) ... out of these Geeta Mera Naam is the only action movie that I can think of. I'm not a huge fan of Indian action movies though so I may not be pointing you in the right direction.

I have a vague recollection of seeing a movie in the late 80's with a girl riding horseback in leather catsuit, whipping all of the bad guys Indiana Jones style. Could that be Hunterwali?

Khoon Bhari Maang & Phool Bane Angarey, both starring Rekha.
I am not sure if N. Chandra's Pratighaat (starring Sujata Mehta & Nana Patekar) falls in this category.

I'm not sure what kind of films you are looking for.
I assumed it to be Heroine dominated films or female revenge type films.

Hunterwali is 1930s film. With the success of that film there were many such films at that time.

Bandit Queen is another revenge based famous film.

Jhansi Ki Rani (Tiger & the flame ?? English name ) is a historical film.

Another recent female action film is "Dhoom 2", although main actor is Hritik Roshan.

Hi rana,

Yes, I'm looking for the Heroine dominated or revenge type films. Hunterwali looks very interesting, but maybe a little too old for my tastes. Has there ever been a modern remake of hunterwali?

Thanks again!

Pratighat sure falls in this "heroine taking revenge" category and in my opinion is the best in this category.

Heroine on horse back:
Aan (Nadira, Dilip Kumar) ??

Another film with heroine on horseback is Sadhna's Rajkumar. It's mainly a romantic film but Sadhna does have some sword fighting scenes. And of course the song where heroine has tied the hero down: "Dilrubaa, Dil Pe Tu, Ye Situm, ----"
