As usual most of the Bollywood film awards, including the Filmfare awards, are a farce. Gulaal is conspicuosly missing from almost all the lists and so is Abhay Deol (Dev. D). Gulaal not only deserves nominations in several categories, but it specially deserves recognition for music & lyrics.

My choices for the year:

Best Film:
Gulaal
Kaminey
3 Idiots

Best Director:
Anurag Kashyap (Gulaal)
Anurag Kashyap (Dev. D)
Vishal Bhardwaj (Kaminey)

Best Actor:
Shahid Kapoor (Kaminey)
Abhay Deol (Dev. D)
Ranbir Kapoor (Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year)

Best Actress: <-- Can't think of a single other performance worth nominating.
Mahi Gill (Dev.D)
Vidya Balan (Paa)

Best Supporting Actor:
Kay Kay Menon (Gulaal)
Amol Gupte (Kaminey)
Abhimanyu Singh (Gulaal)
Omi Vaidya (3 Idiots)

Best Supporting Actress:
Priyanka Chopra (Kaminey)
Kalki Koechlin (Dev. D)
Supriya Pathak (Wake Up Sid)
Divya Dutta (Delhi 6)

Best Music: <– This was a tough category this year.
Amit Trivedi (Dev.D)
Piyush Mishra (Gulaal)
A.R. Rahman (Delhi-6)

Best Lyrics:
Piyush Mishra (for ‘Duniya’ in Gulaal)
Piyush Mishra (for ‘Aarambh Hai’ in Gulaal)
Piyush Mishra (for ‘Yaara Maula’ in Gulaal)

EDIT: I have added to my original list after now having seen both 'Rocket Singh' and 'Paa' yet. I have still not seen 'Firaaq'.

Don't you think, her role in the film, both in length and the context of the film, does not qualify as a full featured role? Thus a nomination/award in the 'Best Supporting Actress' category would be more appropriate. Mahi Gill on the other hand, features in the female protagonist's role and she did a fantastic job in portraying it.

Honestly speaking, I've only seen Dev.D once(waiting for a proper DVD or Blueray release to watch it again) and that too around the time of it's release, which I think was one year ago. Don't get me wrong, every performance in Dev.D was at the top of it's game, even Dibyendu Bhattacharya made for a playful pimp-like Chunnilal, but from what I remember, Kalki Koechlin left a greater impression on me. Given her role was of more importance in the film's second half, I thought the two female protagonist had an equal share?

In a similar vein, would you not consider Priyanka to be in the best actress category for Kaminey rather than best supporting actress?

I can't put such a detailed list together (I don't have the patience!), but Rocket Singh was my favourite film (not seen Gulaal yet).

Actually it is in the same vein, that I have chosen to put Priyanka's role from Kaminey in the 'supporting actress', category. The length of the role played by her is too short, in my opinion, for it to be considered for 'Best actress'.

I made a blunder mistake in my original reply, mistaking the role of "Chatur" being played by Rajeev Ravindranathan, when it is originally played by Omi Vaidya. I've edited my post to make the correction.

Sorry to join this thread at this late stage, bit i've just seen Gulaal and was completely blown away and i have to rave about it. For me it's not just the best indian film of 2009 but also the best film of 2009 over all. The actors, the script, the music, the direction, amazing.
You have no idea how this film will end, when watching it, a hypnotic journey it is. And Kay Kay Menon ..... i can't find the right words to describe how good he is (i've seen the end scene of Shaurya and he betters that here) but the other actors are also ALL magnificent (i can't forget Piyush Mishra's role figure, so unusual)

Your best lista are great, but i would have the cool 99 instead of the Aamir blockbuster
