Hopefully, this film will be another Bala classic. This film went through hell and back during production and censor board submission. I've been following this feature since it began production with Ajith Kumar back in 2005!!! A close friend of mine, who worked on the film, said it will cause much controversy - particularly the cannibalism & Human Sacrifice themes. Many North and South Indian priests are calling for a ban on this film. In addition, a court case in Chennai is being prepared to be heard against the director and producer. This fear has caused Ayngaran to back away from the film – which is a shame as it’s a blu-ray project I would be keen to work on.

Bala is a director I greatly admire. He works with old russian/indian cine equipments, gets no finance, writes crazy scripts, and challenges audiences expectations. Sadly, he's never been given recognition outside Tamil Naidu. I hope this film will finally put him on the map alongside great Indian film-makers of our time.

Priest calling for ban - Oh No.... I am expecting this eagarly. Hope the movie is released on time (Jan 29th?). If the movie is against god, I am sure IR would have walked away. Heard that IR is doing BGM for this movie for more than a month (where he normally takes 1 or 2 days).

Bala - He will be definitely recognized, if not by NI, but international audiances. Since most of the movie has taken place in Kasi and the dialogues are in Sanskirt and Hindi, hopefully this will appeal to some NI audiance as well.

Separately, eagerly waiting for Nandalala CD release (Jan 10th). Seems like the last 40 minutes of the movie dont have any dialogue and fully backed by strong BGM.

According to my friend, who worked on the project, the film is not really about god. Its about how the main protaganist discovers his true calling (a common theme in all Bala films).

IR spend one month writing the compositions and conducting actual scoring sessions.

I can say that Nandalala (a film I have seen in rough cut - as its an Ayngaran Home Production) will not be to everyone's taste. It will be another slow moving drama.

Heard that in Nandalala there is a song that came out as good as "Kannae Kalaimaanae" in Moondram Pirai. Wondering if you had the opportunity to listen to any of the songs (or rough cut wont have songs and BGM in it?)

Mysskin to give credit to “Kikujiro”
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, January 07, 2009]

Director Mysskin's 'Nandhalala' is almost wound up for an early release. The director, who has churned out films like “Chithiram Pesuthadi” and “Anjathey”, is keen to make a mark with 'Nandhalala' in which he plays the lead role besides directing it.

The movie is seemingly inspired by Japanese flick “Kikujiro”, directed by Taikeshi Kitano. It is about the journey of a young child. Released in 1999, the movie swept many awards. 'Kathale Kannalae' Snightha is also in the cast.

Interestingly, Mysskin was tight-lipped when the project initially began. However after pointed out buy certain section of media that the movie is actually a take-off of “Kikujiro”, Mysskin has eventually decided to give due credit to the original version in the title card itself.

Meanwhile, sources close to the director say he is planning his next inspired by August “Rush” (2007), a drama film directed by Kirsten Sheridan and written by Paul Castro

Nandhalala is similar to Kikujiro - and the Tamil version has been fully credited to Kitano (who was also paid for India screenplay rights).

I cannot comment on the songs - as songs wasn't compleated when rough cut was shown.
No BGM was heard in the rough cut. But director wants proper live scoring sessions on final cut.

Kai Veesi from Nandhalala is fantastic. One of IR's finest songs in recent years. I am listening to it over and over. Great melody and orchestration. It would be great if Tamil filmmakers would give IR this kind of inspiration all the time.

IR has also scored music for a Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, entitled SRK. Story-screenplay is credited to Sreenivasan, who wrote the original. Vinay Pathak (Dasvidanya, Bheja Fry) is in the lead, and Warner Brothers has produced it. This was remade in Tamil as Chidambarathil Oru Appasamy, which was also scored by IR.

COA had good story, but bad screen play. Didnt go well in Tamil. Hindi industry wont accept such stories. This movie will go un noticed. just like most of IR movies.

Nandalala - Not impressed as a whole. may be need few more listening.

Kai Veesi is a beautiful song, and I like Thaalattu Ketka, even if it is nothing new. The Gypsy song is grating, though maybe it fits well with the film. Oru Vaandu has a dated sound.

Why will the Blu-ray take so long?

Blu-ray will take longer as I am busy with other film production projects. The negative of Naan Kadavul is in bad shape. It will take months to restore.
