Sunny Bhai .. In which hindi flick has CGI actually looked good? Answer: NONE and this is no exception, hindi cinema can never be like Hollywood .. I dont know maybe the the type of film/colors they use which make the CGI look so fake .. I seriously wish they would give up the use/attempt of CGI, its totally useless.

I don't really rate Khalid Mohammed as a critic - he seems a little hypocritical seeing as his films so far have been pretty crap. But, I did start watching Drona last night, and gave up after 20 mins. Abhishek as Harry Potter? JK Rowling should sue Eros.

Let's kick off the review by stating that Drona is not a "superhero film." It's not Spider-Man; it's not Batman Begins; it's not Krrish or even Toofan[u]. Does that mean it carves out its own genre and, within it, does something authentically interesting? Not quite — it borrows flavors from all over the place, from the [u]Harry Potter series to that of The Lord of the Rings — but, those expecting yet another comic-movie rip-off in which nothing makes sense and everything is hackneyed and unimaginative, can leave their worries at the ticket counter.

Drona's an action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi flick, and, within those bounds, it's not altogether unsuccessful. The effects are creative (though sometimes pitiably archaic [could that interminable flower petal look any more out of place?]); the performances, believable and appropriate; and the music, adequately captivating. The folk who revel in trashing (and watching) everything, hoping to pounce on the opportunity to rank Abhishek Bachchan an inferior action hero to Hrithik Roshan, will have a hard time coming up with complaints. Abhishek, in a somewhat flat role, is far from disappointing, and his austere, mute nature is well-complemented by Kay Kay Menon's wicked performance as the nectar-coveting antagonist. For any follower of Hindi cinema, Priyanka Chopra should be the instant and obvious decision for casting an athletic, talented actress in this sort of movie, and the choice doesn't fall short of expectations.

Is Drona a perfect package? Hell no. It's too short to succeed in what appears to be its grand task: constructing an epic, fantastical, enveloping universe that contains a compelling story and a sympathetic protagonist. The first half moves too slowly and leaves out to much of what's necessary to make the audience care about the main character, and the second ends up feeling rather "smaller" than it ought to. Aditya (Abhishek), in about two four-second moments becomes Drona, and neither he nor we seem really to comprehend the transformation. Wishing not to bore us with pointless details is fine, but, if we're supposed to invest in any of what's happening, a few pointed ones are integral.

As an entry into India's dwarfish repertoire of sci-fi/fantasy films, Drona is an appreciable effort to offer the industry territory it's not yet seriously ventured into. It doesn't dig very deep or go very far, but it's shouldn't be called a terrific waste of opportunity, either.

That's not true. Though, in lower-budget films, it's still laughably out-dated, I feel several more recent Hindi-cinema projects have featured quite believable effects. For example, Bhootnath: whether one does or doesn't like the film (I do), it's a hard argument to make that the computer-generated art looked "bad."

As for Drona, indeed, too many instances of C.G.I. were poor (for instance, the blue flower-petal). Overall, though, the action isn't bad, though the film, itself, is just about OK.

By the way, whether they're good or bad, C.G.I.s piss off Hollywood-movie–watchers, as well: recall how annoyed fans of the Die Hard films were when they saw the obscene amount of computer-generated destruction featured in the initial trailer of Live Free or Die Hard.
