I'm in the making a list mood(sue me). Its rather my ignorant list, since I'm still far behind on alot of films I have yet to see(mostly those of the south Indian film industry).

I would love to see everyone else's list.

ugh, you like Virumaandi? I love the music/songs but even though the film had a decent story, it was poorly presented by Kamal Hasan.

Nandha, Tamil w/Surya? I was watching a clipping of this on T.V. and my family was laughing at me because I was eating pie w/ice cream and when a scene from Nandha started playing apparently I stopped chewing & was staring at the screen with utmost attention

virumaandi wasn’t exactly a great film, but definitely entertaining imo… it reminded me a lot of kukunoor’s 3 deewarein

nandhaa otoh was masterpiece imo. surya was brilliant

it is easily the best film bala made (his other 2 films are horrible - sethu and pithamagan)

from what I recollect, I loved Sethu. It was a great change from the rest of the films released during/prior to that period. Vikram was awesome.

btw, how was chatrapathi? based on your post in the Fights thread, I reckon you've seen the film. after watching the promos after the release of the film, it looks average.

They're both pretty different films. Virumaandi is more like Rashomon while 3 Deewarein is more like Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile (at the end especially). Neither one is a great film but I liked both, though I'd give Virumaandi the edge.

I did not like Sethu or Pithamagan, so I've avoided Nandhaa.

I'll post my list later though I've missed some of the more important films like Kandukondain2, Mr. and Mrs Iyer, and Maqbool.

I dunno yuvan dude, I am not a fan of ‘sethu’ myself… though I actually watched it after I had watched nandhaa - so I had really high expectations

have yet to watch it, was just using it as an example of a peter hyne film… though the fights look killer judging by the promos

I hated 3 deewarein, but the two films definitely share a lot of similarities

the narrative structure of virumaandi was just as similar to 3 deewarein as it was to rashoman

also the two films both have a similar premise - the central characters are convicts sentenced to death, both films begin w/ a woman reporters interviewing the convicts, the convicts proceed to tell their story of how they were incarcerated for murder, the stories turn out to be different perspectives of a connected incident, only in the end do we find out which perspective is the true version, both films end w/ a jail break/attempted jail break involving the reporter…. and on and on

I think it is safe to say virumaandi was heavily inspired by 3 deewarein, though virumaandi was clearly the better film

give it a try, it is brilliant… and like I said it blows away his other 2 films

Alright DVDCollector, here's a look at my top ten (too tired to think up twenty) since the new millenium - in order. BTW, where did you see "Black Friday"? I've been dying to see that flick for the longest time. I also wanted to get your thoughts on "Yahaan". Gem of a film starring Jimmy Shergill

1) Maqbool

2) Dil Chahta Hai

3) Black

4) Kannathil Muthamitaal

5) Ek Hasina Thi

6) Mr and Mrs Iyer

7) Yahaan

8. Chandini Bar

9) Alai Payuthey

10) Mission Kashmir

Here in T.(Toronto that is), you can find the bootleg DVD of Black Friday in certain Indian DVD stores. Yahaan is on my must see list, along with many other titles. I hope to get around it someday(HOPE).

Heh, good thread idea. I don't think I'm qualified to make a list, as I have big viewing holes in my screening duties (I haven't even seen Black Friday yet). But I guess I can make up a tentative one once my exams and essays are over. Just give me a few days...

Scouting various websites for film names and year they were released....., this is what i arrived at ( no particular order ) - i list them because i like them @ this point-in-time, some of them are def. better than others but still i think each of these films held my "suspension of disbelief" and hence deserve a place in my slightly long list
