In its 10th week it's still doing OK in Indian theatres.

BTW, today they showed some 10-20 min segment on grandeur of MEA with comments from various film personalities.
One of them was Ameen Sayani of Binaca Geet Mala.

I have a question on Ameen Sayani.
I started paying attention to Radio publicitiies for films and Binaca Geetmala starting 1963-64 and MEA was released in 1960. Of course, Ameen Sayani was the top radio publicist.
So, was it Ameen Sayani who provided radio publicity for Mughl-E-Azam when it was initially released??

Anyhow, I finally got around to seeing Mughal-E-Azam two days ago, which makes it during the fourth week of release and one song and apparently some scenes were still missing from the film. As much as I enjoyed watching the film, I was still quite dissapointed by the fact that the distributors have butchered a classic by deleting scenes and a song and the cropping of the film from top and bottom to make it widescreen is nothing short of a sin. The framing of scenes has been totally destroyed by the cropping and in some scenes it was unbearably painful to watch Prithviraj Kappors Lips moving while everything from above his lips are cropped and this in a scene in which the focus is Akbar. The so called restorers should have had the sense to atleast pan & scan the frames as per the demands of the scene. Instead of all the credit these idiots are getting, they ought to be shot for destroying a classic.

Mughal-e-Azam at the Berlin festival
By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 09th, 2005 - 1300 hrs IST

The revived version of K.Asif's Mughal-E-Azam is still making waves and going places. So after a screening at the Albert Hall in London the movie has now reached the Berlin Film Festival. The classic film Mughal-E-Azam will be screened at the 55th Annual Berlin International Film Festival that commences from February 10.

Mughal-E-Azam will be showcased under the Retrospective and Homage category.

---------------------------

Did anyone from UK got to see it in the Albert Hall??

Any comments??

Any zulmi planning to catch MEA in Berlin??

My nephew contacted the Albert Hall to find out about when MEA will be screened. They didn't even know they were showing it ... so I don't have a clue as to when this was or how it went! :(

Rather than touring one print around the film festivals it would be good if they could just release a few prints to the usual Indian film multiplexes so we can all see how good (or bad) this revived version is.

Actually - I was excited about this - but I'm rapidly losing interest ... it's been a long time since Diwali / Eid and still no chance of seeing MEA.

MEA show times anounced for Albion and Woodside theatres in Toronto, starting day after tomorrow.

So, it's definitely showing in North American Theatres.

I wish it was in Main stream theatres as well.

Mughal-e-Azam -in Color

Saturday – Sunday: 1:30 pm, 5:00 pm, 9:00 pm

Friday, Monday-Thursday: 4:45 pm, 8:30 pm

----------------------------------------------------

One Question Though:
Firstly, they (Producers of new version) chopped off Top and Bottom of the original frames (to make it 2.4:1 from 1.33:1 original).
Some theatres (at least 2 in Albion-Woodside chain) have 2:1 screen and habitually they (exhibitors) chop off sides of the wider 2.4:1 film frames.

Why present a film chopped off from all four sides and still claim it better than original??

Or, for screens less wide than 2.4:1, will it be shown with soft matt removed and hence putting back the chopped top and bottom portions?? As per producers, full frames were colored. Are they on film too??

If you play the new re-recorded MEA CD out-of-phase you can isolate the new orchestrations, sans original voice track which is mixed in the center. There's some reverb on the vocals, but this is an interesting way to listen to this CD. You can do this with the stereo voice removal plugin on Winamp and other programs, but here's how I did it in Audacity:

1. Split Stereo Track (under the arrow to the left of the waveform)

2. Invert one channel (under Effects menu)

3. Make Stereo Track (under same menu as 1)

4. Stereo to Mono (under Projects menu)

OOPS effect
