I haven't yet seen this film and I'm not too interested either. But it really irritates me that Kareena Kapoor keeps going on and on about how her role in this film (and even in Asoka & Khushi) is extremely women-oriented and that such a accession hasn't been seen in Hindi films in years? My only questions are; what is it about acting like a slut and that too overacting makes her role soo 'women-oriented'? And has she even seen or heard of movies like Chandni Bar, Satta & Bhoot to claim she's the only actress to be receiving strong female representation roles? And this bitch went to Harvard? :bangbang:

I think she went to Columbia, though it could be Harvard. With enough money, any doof can get into an Ivy League university, and even become President of the United States :)

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is the story of Sanjana and the two Prems who enter her life. The story narrates the emotional ups and downs she faces when it comes choosing the Prem she really loves.

Sanjana is a happy-go-lucky girl. She stays in a small time town called Sunder Nagar with her parents, her pet dog and four friends. She is happy in her life except for the fact that her mother wants her to get married soon and is always on the look out for someone. Further, her sister Roopa finds an ideal match for her in Prem, a rich business tycoon. Prem’s business empire is spread all around the world. The latest acquistion he makes is of a plant in Sunder Nagar, Sanjana’s home town. Roopa comes to know that he is soon to visit his plant in Sunder Nagar, and so she fixes up a meeting of Prem and her parents.

Prem arrives to some extra special treatment at Sanjana’s home, but Sanjana sees him as an intruder into her privacy. She hates him initially, but later on realises that he is not that bad. She soon falls in love with him and he too falls for her. Destiny runs havoc soon, as they all realise that the Prem who is in Sunder Nagar is not Prem, the business tycoon.

The one whom Sanjana loves is Prem Kishen, the business manager of Prem Kumar, the real businessman. Prem Kumar had sent his business manager with the same name to Sunder Nagar as he had to stay back due to certain other official commitments. Confusion takes over. Things change. Sanjana's mother starts looking at Prem Kishen as an impostor and wants him out and opts for the original Prem Kumar for her daughter. But Sanjana is already in love with Prem. What does she do and what happens here after form the crux of the story.

In true Sooraj Barjatya style, this film too has friendly domestic servants, pet animals, wedding ceremonies, traditional rituals, costumes and songs and all these contribute to the entertainment value of the film. The film begins in a slow pace, but picks up as soon as Hrithik enters the scene. The first half is filled with fun and comic situations. Most of the time, however, is spent in establishing the characters.

Contrary, to his previous films, this time around Sooraj has shot the film in picturesque outdoor locations. The film has some thrill in the form of Hrithik's antics and some very well shot songs in the first half. Even the interval point is just perfect with Kareena's parents realising that the real Prem is yet to arrive.

Enter Abhishek and the story gains momentum. All the sequences involving Abhishek are well executed and well shot. The emotional overdoes in the second half are sure to be applauded by the female audiences who will love every moment of it. Music by Anu Malik is a mixed bag with some numbers like `Chali ayee', `Ajnabee' and `Bani bani' well composed. But all the other songs prove a let down.

On the flip side, the film does not have the desired pace in the first half. Also, it does not have any mass appeal apart from the fact that it has stars. The wafer thin storyline hampers the progress of the film and we have seen this kind of a film very often in the recent past. In terms of novelty too, the film has very little to offer apart from the fact that the climax is very well handled.

Also, the first half required some editing. If the director had focussed more on this department, the film would have had the desired pace and effect. Thankfully, we see no clichés in the climax and it is real as it gets. The very fact that the girl herself stands up for her love is what is novel and looks real.

Hrithik Roshan is relatively at ease with his role and manages to evoke sympathy. Kareena Kapoor is just brilliant, but it is Abhishek Bachchan who walks away with all the accolades largely due to his screen presence and the sincerity that he portrays. Pankaj Kapur is good. Himani Shivpuri leaves her mark. Reema Laago, Johnny Lever, Raju Srivastava and the rest of the cast lend able support.

Sooraj Barjatya has once again proved successful in making a clean and family entertainer. However, the problem he has is that the subject has been seen so very often in Indian cinema - remember Chit Chor? This apart, he has done a good job and manages to get good performances from everyone. The film might do well in major cities and the overseas market.

How many times have we seen the female lead described as "happy go lucky"? Can't they think of some other adjective?

BTW, Chandna, any chance BEI is doing Chit Chor? :D

Sooraj Barjatya’s “Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon” is one of the biggest releases this summer. One would hope for a quality film, given the dearth thereof in 2003, but the film fails to deliver. In fact, the film makes for one of the most uninspired, insipid pieces of work to be manufactured by Bollywood studios in quite some time.

The film follows the trials of a young woman, Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor), who lives a picture perfect life with her extended family, her pet dog, and a computerized parrot. Sanjana´s parents begin looking for a suitable husband for her. They find a man named Prem. Sanjana agrees to meet Prem (Hrithik Roshan), and a song and a dance later, falls deeply in love with him. But there´s trouble brewing. It turns out, there is another Prem (Abhishek Bachchan) in town. A love triangle forms, and Sanjana is forced to choose between the two Prem´s. But her choice can have dire repercussions; she has to choose between her love for Prem (Hrithik) and her family´s wishes for her.

The film’s cliché-ridden script may as well have come off of an assembly line, and Barjatya´s treatment is just as hackneyed. Like almost every other Hindi film in the genre, the first half is filled with pseudo-comedy sketches, college dance functions, songs in foreign locales, and overwhelmingly shallow situations that allegedly depict two people falling deeply in love. The second half is full of loud dramatic outbursts, confrontations, and silly baseless actions by self-sacrificial characters. And Barjatya´s trademark preaching of traditional Indian values is present throughout; so much so that, in parts, the film seems like propaganda paid for by the Indian government’s cultural preservation departments. Not an ounce of the tons of melodrama in the film is compelling; audiences have seen these same stock characters in these same synthetic situations in almost every other love triangle-drama film that is released in India.

Performances in the film lack the kind of flair that is needed to elevate a mundane movie such as this.

Kareena Kapoor has played this exact role earlier in films like “Yaadein,” “Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai,” and “Khushi,” but still manages to turn in an unimpressive performance. Kareena comes off as very inexperienced, mouthing dialogs synthetically, and going over the top in emotional scenes far too often. There’s more to acting than making facial contortions and changing one’s pitch, but Kareena doesn’t seem to care for the art of performance anymore. The flair and elegance from “Refugee” and “Asoka” are just distant memories now.

Hrithik Roshan has apparently attended the same school of acting as Kareena, as he matches the loudness and superficial quality of her performance nearly dialogue for dialogue, emotion for emotion. There is nothing at all new or exciting about his work here; he delivers the same stock expressions he’s been using since he debuted. This is Hrithik’s most unspectacular, boring performance. He clearly has a long way to go before he can call himself a dynamic performer.

The only stand out in the enterprise is Abhishek Bachchan. Three years ago when the three stars in this film debuted, Abhishek was written off while Kareena and Hrithik became the critics’ darlings.

Abhishek, however, in an understated performance, completely upstages his contemporaries in this film. His quiet, introspective performance is the shortest, but most impacting turn in the movie.

Pankaj Kapur as Kareena’s father is the only other performer in the film who does something with the scope he is given. The rest of the character artistes in the film are mostly regulars from the Barjatya camp, and they continually slow down the film with their slapstick histrionics.

Technically, the film is nothing special. Set design looks expensive, but artificial and clunky throughout.

Cinematography is bland and uninteresting for the most part, and the foreign locales get more and more uninteresting with each passing film they are employed in.

The music by Anu Malik is quite awful, but his tunes have been choreographed and shot well. Kareena and Hrithik are far better dancers than they are actors, and both of them look and dance well in the film.

One can always depend on Bollywood´s high-profile releases for melodrama as banal and predictable as it is pedestrian. India´s viewing public just can´t get enough grandiose musicals based on tried and true romantic storylines, and Hindi film producers are not keen on innovation when there is money to be made.

Keeping this in mind, Sooraj Barjatya´s "Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon" delivers on all of its makers´ promises. The film has a grand look, and no expense seems to have been spared in filming songs and weddings. The film is packed with some of the glossiest stars in Bollywood. The film is loud, superficial, and over-the-top in dealing with stale and tired subjects like love, family sentiment, and responsibility. It will please fans of Bollywood´s feature length soap opera genre to no end, but for moviegoers looking for quality cinema, there is close to nothing worthwhile in this picture.

This is bullshit. He simply has the only role of the 3
(and practically all other roles) that does not ask him
relentlessly to make an ass of himself. It suffices to
act normal. He does nothing special with the role.

I beg to differ. I feel Abhishek could have been a lot louder and melodramatic, for example in the climax scene when he finds out about Hrithik and Kareena. He also could have jumped around and made a total fool of himself in the Friendship Day scene, but didn't. And Hrithik's character may have been loud, but underplaying it could have done it the world of good. I believe Hrithik's character could have been likeable, but the way he played it, he ended up being one of the most irritating things I have seen in a long time.

I reckon he'll probably get nominated.......not because of his performance, but because of the shoddy way the Filmfare awards are run.
