Just Vindicates my statement abt "Desis" in North America and their tastes for "good" movies :p (Now who was that who had the temerity to state otherwise ! )

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2003/jul/01mpkdh.htm
Rajshri Productions' first big budget contemporary love story, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan, danced to solid numbers across North America.

With several housefull shows over the weekend, the film directed by Sooraj R Barjatya has grossed $672,000 on 60 screens.

It is the 16th highest grossing film in the country and had a per screen average of about $11,200. The movie and its music has struck a chord with younger audiences. Many theatre managers said they have not seen such a youthful audience in a long time for a desi film.

The top 20 list also featured another film by a desi director.

Gurinder Chadha's coming-of-age comedy drama Bend It Like Beckham grossed $560,000 in its 16th week. The film, showing on 301 screens, has grossed about $24 million and was at the 18th position on the list. It is expected to be in the theatres for four more weeks. The screen count will come down significantly after two weeks. (Now thats a real movie)

Worldwide, the gross for the movie, made for $5 million, is reaching $75 million, making it one of the most profitable films in recent years.

The screen count for Main Prem... will not change the coming week because of the lucrative July 4 weekend promise. This is one of the hottest seasons for movies in any year.

Even if the box-office for Main Prem... follows the usual tradition for Hindi films -- a decline of 50 per cent in the second week -- it could still have a decent $1.5 million gross in the end.

Some exhibitors said they were hopeful the movie could reach $2 million if it does not suffer a big drop during the July 4 weekend. It is reportedly doing excellent business in Britain and is expected to sail past $1.5 million.

Though far removed from such huge Rajshri hits as Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! which had grossed over $2 million, MPKDH is quite a hit and its success is a big boost to its stars, particularly Roshan, Kapoor and Bachchan. For Bachchan, this will be his first widely seen film in North America.

Meanwhile, according to the trade publication Variety, the Shah Rukh Khan-Rani Mukerji starrer Chalte Chalte has grossed $1 million in Britain and could end its run with $2 million. Though distributor Eros isn't releasing the figures for the film in North America, it is estimated to have approached $900,000.

Box Office Mojo has $271,000 for Chalte Chalte, while IBOS Network has the opening as $480,334. It's grossed $1,080,317 in the UK so far.

MPKDH grossed $262,208 on the UK weekend of 27-29 June :nervous:

Let THE HYPE END with SCREEN REVIEW:

The magic is missing

If even viewed, without any pertinence to Basu Chatterjee’s likeable Chitchor, Sooraj’s labour of love is embarrassing.

Siddhartha Dey

Cast and Credits

Producer
Kamal Kumar, Rajkumar , Rajat A Barjatya
Director
Sooraj Barjatya
Music
Anu Malik
Cast
Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan

Where are those moments, those soul-stirring sensitivities, those chemistries, those ever-impactful consanguinities, synonymous with the Rajshri films?

Okay. Sooraj has semi-progressed from Bijon Dasgupta’s sets to New Zealand and Mauritius vicinities, some phirang sports and hep monosyllables, but at the cost of striking any chord with the audience. There is this gutsy-shoot from the hip - girl Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor), who is pampered by four friends, a levelheaded papa (‘bas Sushila’! fame) and an over the top mother, Himani Shivpuri. Miss Sanjana is keen to pick out her own life-partner. A proposal in the form of ‘Prem’(surnames are dispensable) is sent by elder sister from the US of A. Prem (Hritik Roshan), a redundantly buoyant hunk lands in Sundernagar and is given a traditional welcome. Hunk wins everybody’s hearts, though his hobbies like river-rafting, ice-skiing, underwater diving don’t match with that of Sanjana. But wait! This Prem is not the chosen one. It is actually Prem (Abhishek Bachchan) the second, first one’s boss. So Prem -2, for whom business means saying ‘Close the deal’, follows with mama and falls head over heels for Sanjana.

But now Sanjana puts her foot into her mouth, oops, she puts her foot down to make a right choice. While Hrithik goes overboard and Kareena has her moments, it is Abhishek who holds fort. The songs are not all that melodious. If even viewed, without any pertinence to Basu Chatterjee’s likeable Chitchor, Sooraj’s labour of love is embarrassing.

He saw Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Kaun at least a 100 times and even did a series of paintings on it. So enticed was legendary M F Husain by the Madhuri Dixit-Salman Khan starrer. But today, Husain is a dejected man, his favourite director Sooraj Barjatya has let him down. Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon was so unbearable for Husain that he couldn't help but walk out of the theatre after watching the film for just half an hour. "I was shocked to see someone like Sooraj Barjatya make such a horrible film. I always thought Sooraj was one filmmaker who correctly depicted the Indian culture on celluloid, unlike other filmmakers who only try aping the West. But this time it looked as if kauwa hans ki chaal chalne ki koshish kar raha tha. He tried copying Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra and Farhan Akhtar by introducing the jeans- and-coke culture, he tried to appeal to the youth in which he failed miserably," says Husain dejectedly. The painter further adds, "How can the man claim that he worked on the script for three years and come out with such crap. It gave me such a bad feeling. I felt as if someone had died in my house!" As for the performances in the film. Husain feels that the director has failed the actors completely. "Kareena has tried very hard but what can she do if the script does not support her. Hrithik Roshan was a disaster. One hopes his father makes up for the damage that has been done by Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. He is such a handsome boy. I always liked actors with such long face-cuts. They look manly unlike our other actors who have tomato-like faces which don't appeal to me. I am told Abhishek was good in the movie, but then, anyone would have looked better than Hrithik after what he had been made to do in the film."Husain can't resist but speak about Madhuri Dixit, who he thinks made all the difference in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. "She is a phenomenon! And her absence can be sorely felt in all of Sooraj's next films. Hum Saath Saath Hain was a hopeless film but it atleast had some Indian sensibilities which appealed to the Indian audience," Husain fumes. He adds in the end, "All these years, Sooraj Barjatya was media shy, but today he comes out in the open to defend a movie like this. It only goes to show the bankruptcy of his intelligence."

In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (July 11), there's a short piece that talks about this movie (complete with a picture of Hrithik and Kareena!):

"Bombay Dreams. Here's one summer hit you haven't heard about: Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, the Bollywood musical that outearned From Justin To Kelly last weekend and had the top per-screen average. "A lot of Indian distributors didn't know how to report [box office] figures," says Lisa Tsering, an India-West editor. But now they're getting wise. And maybe Hollywood will learn who the real American idols are. -Sumeet Bal

MPKDH disillusions Hussain
Film director and painter M F Hussain who was absolutely besotted by Hum Aapke Hain Koun, the film which was responsible for sparking off a special feeling for Madhuri, was absolutely disillusioned by the Hrithik-Abhishek-Kareena starrer Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. So much so the he walked out of the film barely in the first half-an-hour. "I thought Sooraj made films on Indian culture and portrayed family values. But this one failed to live up to my expectations. It was horrible. He has attempted to ape Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar and Aditya Chopra and introduced the Coke culture but failed miserably." The painter added, "How can he say that he has worked on the script for three years and come up with such crap?" As for the actors, Hussain opined that he felt sorry for Kareena because she tried her best but could not help it because of a weak script. "Poor Hrithik Roshan. I hope his father's film makes up for the damages he has suffered because of this film. I have heard Abhishek Bachchan is good. But one can't say that about the film," he said.

hrithik and poo were sad in this film period...........
abhishek was slightly likeable.........

IT is one of the worst films to come out of the rajshri banner.......
Infact arsh bhai i saw Jhankaar beats last week and I really enjoyed the film....... The music was a treat to the ears.. the performances clapworthy and the comedy would bring out a laugh or two.......
