imho, despite being reminiscent of both hugely entertaining albums of gulzar/rehman, this one does not cut it!!

On first listen, I liked "Tere Bina" and "Jaage Hain." Just like you arsh, I'm not too familiar with Rehman's work in the south, so don't know if they are recycled.

Bottom line, listed twice! nothing like dil se or saathiya!

In nutshell, if rehman is re born umpteen time! There was never a Zubaida, before, nothing like it now and will never be one like it again!!

I immensely enjoyed!! Dheeme Dheeme Gaoon, from Zubaida and Yeh Rishta added bonus songs in album!

ugh, I hope it's not a remake of Citizen Kane. I didn't read the article you posted DVDCollector, but I happened to catch the last line before I hit "PostReply".

I think Ratnam himself knows never to touch Citizen Kane, but sure enough to make a film as ambitious as one.

Being a period piece, most of these songs aren't extremely innovative. This is not another Dil Se or Alai Payuthey/Saathiya. I bet only a couple of the songs will even be fully picturized. That said, the songs are still good, even if they're not fantastic. Guru won't be an Alai Payuthey/Saathiya where the songs are overtly showcased in the film. These are my initial thoughts, since I've just heard the album.

Tere Bina-Nice song that has a nostalgic fee, with a touch of melancholy. However, ARR should not have sung this. Something is off about his voice in this song. His voice fits better singing "dham dhara dham dhara chashm chasm..." in Ay Hairathe. Could "dham dhara dham dhara mast mast" be inspired by "dam mast qalandar mast mast?" The song is dedicated to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the liner notes of the CD.

Ay Hairathe- Beautiful song. Again evokes a previous era, with the harmonium and the shimmering electric guitars. The best song on the album. Hariharan and Alka Yagnik sing excellently. I like that Irish part that pops up out of nowhere. Reminds me of the interludes in some old Hindi songs, where they'd suddenly break out the foreign influence.

Ek Lo Ek Muft- This is a bhang song! Haven't heard anything like this in a while. Very strange rustic song, but fun. Bappi Lahiri's singing is the perfect drunk voice. I'm sure the picturization will be interesting.

More thoughts when I've heard the album a few more times.

I look forward to your verdict after repeated hearing!!

But I concur with

Quote:
Although Guru does have its share of winners, it has its share of drawbacks as well. When we think of Roja and Dil Se, we think of perfection, and Guru is far from it. And after a productive 2005, Rahman closes the year 2006 with just one [Hindi] release (remember, the music of RDB released late 2005). Personally, after waiting all year for Rahman to return, I was quite disappointed with his efforts, as it falls in the category of Yuva, several notches below the likes of a Dil Se. But one is still able to treasure Tere Bina, Ay Hairathe, and Mayya. But there’s always 2007, and there’s nothing like waiting for another Rahman score

rating it 7/10.

Lagaan was period but far better!!

This is one of those albums that could have been perfect some how!

Now I have listened to my orig cd a couple times too! But still, I am not becoming that friendly to GURU!

Baazi Laga
Singer : Bhargavee, Madhushree, Swetha, Udit Narayan( Pukar) redressed!

most of songs kinda seems redressed with new arrangements!

Barso re ..heavily ask for Rehman's old Favorite Kavita Subraminim, Shtreya is just ok!

my fav is " again thanks to Hariharan and alka's mallai chords" Aey Hairat e Ashqui!

Tere Bina isn't an outstanding song, but it is a nice melody.

Mayya sounds pretty generically Middle Eastern, and Baazi Laga doesn't even sound like an ARR tune. Sounds more like a decent Anu Malik tune IMO :?

The official website says Guru was shot in Super 35 :(

Middle eastern tune! Rehman used in Pukar! in sunta he mera khuda, and again I think he used middle eastern lifted tune in RDB prelude and then rehman inserts in Dil se style( satrangi re)

and Baazi laga is reminicent of Pukar's non rehmanish song too!
( hamrahi jab ho mastana)that was a garden variety bollywoodish song too!

Barso re megha also sounds very typical any of other composer forte number too!! very typical garden variety! Rehman has used same raga based composition, many times with better outcome! and the best imho, was from Love u Hamesha( Ek ladki thee)

I can understand that it might be not sounding very good to hard core fans that another Gulzar/Rehman/Mani flick does not measure upto their previous efforts!

DILSE 9.5/10
Saathiya 9/10
Guru(7-7.5/10.

Anu's umrao jaan 8/10.

Most unlike Rehamn but in my top 10 best soundtrack list of Rehman was ONE TWO KA FOUR! I loved it!! But beside the point, I owe myself an orig cd of all rehman's soundtrack to pay my homage to maestro who introduced hindi music with high quality/ true quality music!

others:

Zubaida
Lagaan
Taal
one two ka 4
dil se
saathiya
pukar
Meenaxi
Bose
Water
1947 earth
Rangeela

I was aiming for ten though!

For coming out with Umrao jaan , Anu malik ko saat khoon muaff! He resurfaced from the bottom !
