OK, I just saw Garam Masala. Man...it was...well, I don't want to say "bad"...let's just say, "not good." You see, I don't want to say that Garam Masala was "bad," as I desparately want to like it. I like Priyadarshan, and I like Akshay Kumar, and I love Paresh Rawal, and I want to like Garam Masala...but, I can't. Really, does anyone here honestly think that Garam Masala was a commendable effort? The comedic plot is older than the hills, the execution is to be scoffed at, the characters are beyond bland and uninteresting. This isn't even the type of film you can enjoy if you "leave your brain at the door"; it's just dull, uninspired, sophomoric film-making. The fact that this festival of mediocrity comes from an experienced, respected film-maker, such as Priyadarshan, is even more saddening. As an "initial effort," it might be excused as an "OK first try," but, for Priya, it's just pathetic. More terrible, is that the guy seems to slowly be losing his touch. Hulchul was bad, Kyon Ki was horrendous, and Garam Masala just seems acceptable by comparison. How is this the same man who brought us Hera Pheri, Virasat, and even Hungama (along with, of course, many Malayalam classics [from what I hear]). Akshay Kumar, one of the most talented comedic actors in the Indian film industry, is beyond wasted; he actually pales in comparison with John Abraham. Paresh Rawal is good, but even he is given the bare minimum with which to work. Really, I just have nothing else to say about this film. The title song (crooned by the immensely gifted Adnan Sami) is, by far, the best part of this venture, and I honestly wish I'd gone no further than watching the video of it.
