Lagaan, 1942 - A Love Story, Satya, Dil Chahta Hai and Mission Kashmir are some all time favourites of mine. But they have too many flaws to be masterpieces - the best of the lot probably being Lagaan.

Some 'full-fledged' masterpieces to me are The Lord Of The Rings films, The Royal Tenenbaums, almost anything by the Coen brothers, Amelie, etc (to name some relatively popular ones :) ). But really, it's quite subjective.

Of course there's probably a whole lot of 'small scale' good stuff out there waiting to be discovered but is lost in an avalanche of popular trash.

If you are comparing indian films and actors with those of hollywood ones then forget it, they seems to be of two different genres with the later being more advanced. The actors does not get much scope to show there histrionics in hindi movies, They have to sing, dance show unnceccessary emotions. The most important factor that makes an actor to do well is the director. If the director has the talent then he takes out best from the actor (directors like satyajit ray, Hrishikesh mukherjee). Now, I too agree with all of you that AB's performance in his seconds innings have been overrated except in some films like Ankhen .., But then again its the director. If you are talking about hollywood then let me tell you that though LOTR may be the best but it was full of graphics and nothing else. When an actor is facing a camera he just goes by what the director says. Give bollywood a spieldberg and let AB act in that, I am pretty sure that even the hardcore critics have to shut up there mouth. AB's best performance came with one of the good directors Like Hrisida, sippy and even Yash chopra (Who since some time now have forgetten the art of filmaking) Its the director and his camera work which can ooze out the real acting. A Bad director can make the actors performance worse and the critics getting some chance to open there mouth. I just ask one question , do you people think that If Amitabhs part in films like Boom, Hum Kisise kam nahin,... and all such ridiculous films was played by any other actor in the world then it wouldn't have been a flop? When i disccused the topic then I talked about the energy and the zeal AB is still showing towards acting even at this age. When the co-stars of his age have long ago given up the hope of acting. Even today the best of the directors (whether art/commercial) in hindi film industry wanted to make film with AB, whats the reason will you give for that.

Actors in Indian movies often show too many histrionics because the scripts often demand lots of crying, anger, etc.

The AB films I like most are by the directors you mentioned.

The script is also important. Good actors and directors can only do so much with bad dialogue or hokey stories.

Strange? Why be a FAN of Bollywood if it has NEVER delivered to your expectations? I thought fans by their very nature are impressed with whoever or whatever they are fans of!

:p

Sorry I don't fit your definition.
