Saawariya(LIMITED) is playing in 3 multiplexes in SFO bay area, while OSO in 2 only!

It was quite good - probably my favourite Bhansali film (this coming from a non-fan.) I'll link a review relatively soon.

Rani is electric, and Ranbir is endearing. Sonam looks gorgeous, but is stiff the entire way through.

EDIT: Oh yeah, as for the poll, I voted in favour of OSO. I can't see Saawariya doing well at all. At my theatre, the Farah Khan film was practically sold out, while my showing of Saawariya was practically empty.

The fact is if you go in expecting another Black, you will be disappointed.

But I enjoyed it tremendously for its simple tale of unrequited young love. The emphasis is on "unrequited" and "young", which sets this film apart.

It's the type that takes time to understand, not of the instant gratification variety other than the opulent sets and cinematography. You feel a bit of a void after it is over - my wife thought it was depressing at first - but once you discuss the characters' motivations and the ending, you'll feel it all makes sense.

And as to the question of who is the star of the movie, the answer is unequivocally RANI MUKHERJEE. She gives layers and nuances to the Gulabji character that were sorely missing in her recent Laaga Cinema Mein Boredom.

How Long is Saawaria ??

There are as many run times mentioned as many minutes in half an hour.

Ranging from 2 hours 8 min to 2 hrs 40 min run times have been mentioned.

Cinemaclock.com lists it at 2 hrs 22 min.

As the reports are mixed, expect run time trims as the time progresses. So, if want to watch it in full, watch early.

Caught the film today but reached theater a bit late. As I arrived, some scene was going on and within a min, "S L B introducing --- " came on. From that title to the end of end-titles it was 2 Hr 15 min. So film is definitely longer than 135 min.
Update: Caught the missing portion of film with OSO: I hasd missed 2-3 min. So, the theatrical screening is 137 - 138 min.

There was no SDDS track

Surround sound and ambience was excellent. Better than I-Max screening of Devdas. Even soft songs/ music felt like rock with surround ambience.

Film was def lot of style. Adults may like it but for kids it was a big bore.

Reports had said that Ranbir dropping the towel scene was cut by censors. I don't know what was cut, but a Sagar like towel drop from Ranbir's back was there for a frame or two. Indian censors don't apply to overseas and perhaps this was the scene they cut from Indian version ??

----------------------
BTW, OSM show was completely sold out. Not even a "single" seat they were selling. Saawaria was also 70 - 80 % full which is better than other film screenings in the past where a 0 - 40 % is a norm.

From what I've heard Saawariya is much better than OSS. I wasn't expecting much from Farah Khan anyway.
But it looks like Saawariya may be another remake (as all of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films have been so far). Although it is based on a short-story by Dostoevsky, it has been made before by European directors Robert Bresson, Luchino Visconti and Ivan Pyryev. I just wonder how much Sanjay Leela has copied from these directors and how much he's put in of his own. Apparently all these versions were very good. It was disappointing to find out that Black was a remake, even though Bhansali refused to comment on it. Did he really think nobody would notice?

Do Indian directors pay any royalties?

Didn't his dad Rishi Kapoor do a scene like that in Bobby? I really hate it when they try to copy their fathers. Like AB Jr did early in his career with those dodgy dance moves, he was trying to be Amitabh part 2.
It could be that censors cut the Indian version. For example "The Namesake" had the dress-falling off scene of Zuleikha Robinson cut for Indian audiences, but the scene was present for the western audiences. It's strange that Saawariya would be cut when "Ek Chotisi love story" was uncut.

I have yet to see the film but I have a question: does it really deserve all this hate? I don't mean on these boards but everywhere I look (online critics and even from the audience), I'm hearing negative comments and it being compared with RGV Ki Aag and No Smoking. Surely it can't be up there with Aag (in terms of content and overall acceptance) and Smoking (in terms of acceptance only). I've heard that the story is either too long or too boring. Yet almost everyone has said the two leads are great and the film looks great that seems to be all that they liked. Of course, I'll be the judge of that, but I don't believe it's as bad as people are making it out to be. Or is it?

Actually, Indian censors gave SLB a choice. Either remove those 1-2 frames and get a U/ UA cert or retain the frames and get an "A cert. He opted for U/ UA classification.

$ 600,000 was an estimate. Actual number has been revised to $ 542,000, @ #24. (Just the opposite of O S O where actual collections are more than estimated at same time).
