RANG DE BASANTI (PAINT IT YELLOW)

Someone ought to teach these guys in Bollywood that the color Baanti is not Yellow, but rather it is Saffron.

Sorry for going off topic here but I could not help myself since whenever I see the title it bothers me that they cannot even get such a simple thing right. Specially considering that Saffron is the color in the Indian National Flag and not Yellow or for that matter Orange.

wasnt paint it YELLOW the name it was given by the indian filmmakers for the international release of the film?

The point is that even if they were to have made an English version it ought to have been called 'Paint It Saffron' rather than 'Paint It Yellow'. Calling it Yellow instead of Saffron takes away the very essence of what the title is supposed to imply, ie. National pride.

Not sure about India itself, but when you think Saffron over here first thing that spring’s to mind is a flower or a spice. Here's quote from Wikipedia;

Quote:
The word saffron originated from the 12th-century Old French term safran, which derives from the Latin word safranum. Safranum is also related to the Italian zafferano and Spanish azafrán.[7] Safranum comes from the Arabic word aṣfar (أَصْفَر‎), which means "yellow," via the paronymous zaʻfarān (زَعْفَرَان‎), the name of the spice in Arabic.[6]

Although having said that, when the BBC reviewed it they did call it Rang De Basanti (Paint It Saffron);

Although if you’re going be pedantic about translations I would have thought the first thing that pops out is how they went from "rang de" ie “colour it/me” to "paint it" :lol:

Watched Pan's Labyrinth and found it to be a very good movie, not seen much of other Guillermo del Toro’s movies (have got Blade 2 & Hellboy queued up on my ever growing to watch list but never get the time). Great imaginative story telling and all, but what stood out for me was the performance of the Sergi López (Captain Vidal) what a chilling and cool villain. I can’t remember the last time I remember an onscreen villain being so absorbing to watch.

Black Book and Volver left to watch now :o

You need to check out The Devil's Backbone and Chronos. The Devil's Backbone is a sister-film to Pan's Labyrinth set during the war in Spain. I'm not a fan of Guillermo's English films, they're OK but his Spanish-language films are much better.

Both Black Book and Volver were also very good.

How can they explain that "The Last King of Scotland" is a better British film than "The Queen" but "The Queen" is a better film than "The Last King of Scotland" ??
So, which one is better ?? :lol: :?

Does look a bit of a mockery (like any other award ceremony really). But in this case it's the way the films are voted for. As I understand it “Best British Film” is voted by an independent jury (appointed by the BAFTA members I think). “Best Film” category is chosen by the BAFTA members themselves.

Ali bhai i think u might have got it wrong....the difference between the 2 awards is in the title of the category "best BRITISH film" & "best FILM"

the latter being any film that isn't british in terms of finance.

BUT i too could be wrong !!!!

I was just going on what I've read, it's possibly wrong :lol:

I did look up the official definitions of the categories. 'Best film' is actually 'THE MICHAEL BALCON AWARD for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema' which The Queen won.
Quote:
This award is in the gift of the Academy's Film Committee. Its primary purpose is to honour the talents of individuals from the industry whose achievements are not usually recognised in other award categories.

‘Best British film’ goes by the full title, ‘THE ALEXANDER KORDA AWARD for the Outstanding British Film of the Year’ which the THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND won.
Quote:
. Director(s), Writer(s) and a maximum of three Producers are eligible.
. The Academy adheres to the definition laid down by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport when determining whether a film is British.
. The nominees and winner of this award are decided by a combination of membership vote, Film Committee discussion and jury.

Just as I thought Pan's Labyrinth won the award, which I think it really deserved. Although Rang De Basanti was quite good I still don't think it was good enough to be up there. Didn't anything better come out of India in the past year?
I saw Aamir Khan was there to present an award. Did they have to put him to stand next to Emily Watson? :shock: Didn't they look a bit awkward!

Having seen Black Book recently, the best film was Pan's Labyrinth from these selected. I would put Black Book and Apocalypto as the weakest in the category;

1 PAN'S LABYRINTH - Alfonso Cuarón/Bertha Navarro/Frida Torresblanco/Guillermo del Toro
2 VOLVER - Agustín Almodóvar/Pedro Almodóvar
3 RANG DE BASANTI (PAINT IT YELLOW) - Ronnie Screwvala/Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
4 APOCALYPTO - Mel Gibson/Bruce Davey
5 BLACK BOOK (ZWARTBOEK) - Teun Hilte/San Fu Maltha/Jens Meurer/Paul Verhoeven

When’s the next BAFTA happening? It’ll take me another year to catch up :o

I'd put Black Book and RDB in the weakest category. For this year they may put forward Eklayva, though I hope they push 'Gandhi, my father' which was a better film and you know the Brits like controversial stuff, so maybe it has a chance of winning.
