No jingoism in `Lakshya`

By Taran Adarsh
Wednesday, 26 May , 2004, 10:26

The million-dollar question is, does LAKSHYA have an anti-Pak theme? Is there a lot of Pak-bashing in the film? If so, what are its chances in the current scenario, when relations between the two nations [India, Pakistan] are at an all-time high?

“You cannot ignore history,” Javed Akhtar clarifies during the IIFA weekend in Singapore, “Both India and Pakistan have attempted films that run down the other nation, so why single out Indian films? Indian films are more popular, they have a larger reach, may be that's why people feel that Indian films have gone all out to malign Pakistan.”

The writer of substance continues in the same breath, “LAKSHYA doesn't preach or propagate hatred. All the same, you cannot overlook facts. Today, we talk of the European Union, but can you ever deny World War II or alter history? Let me clarify, we haven't carried out changes in the film. On the contrary, the changes have taken place in the Indo-Pak relationship.”

Farhan Akhtar seconds that. “There's no jingoism in the film. A portion of the film deals with Operation Vijay [Kargil] issue and we've tried to be as factual as we can. The film tells the story from the army man's point of view.”

Javed Akhtar, who returns to script writing after a hiatus, feels that son Farhan has done complete justice to his script. “I haven't done any favours to my son. The thought [Operation Vijay] compelled me to write the script. Of course, he [Farhan] has paid me handsomely. But there's no denying that the visuals have only added to what I had penned on paper,” he smiles.

On his part, Farhan Akhtar denies that LAKSHYA is a semi-documentary film on the Indian Army. “It's not a recruitment film for the Indian Army,” says the talented director, “There has been a gap between DIL CHAHTA HAI and LAKSHYA only because I didn't come across a script that would motivate me. But when my father narrated this script, I connected with it instantaneously. Let's say, it was a case of the film finding me, instead of me finding the film.”

With DEV slated for release on June 11, LAKSHYA on June 18, DEEWAAR on June 25 and KYON! HO GAYA NA…! on July 2, isn't there an overdose of Bachchan starrers in the market? Won't that cut into each other's business?

“Had I been a Hrithik Roshan, then yes, the producers had every reason to press the panic button. But I am a mere character actor,” Bachchan Sr. states modestly, “In any case, films find their own audience. At the end of the day, it is the movie that works.”

Ironically, while Bachchan has worked with Javed Akhtar in 14/15 films so far, his screen name in a majority of films has been Vijay. In LAKSHYA, it is Sunil Damle. “But he's a part of Operation Vijay, so it's Vijay yet again,” says Javed Akhtar. Now, that's quite a coincidence, isn't it?

This writer witnessed portions [songs and some scenes] of the film after this tête-à-tête. Indiafm

I've just heard some of the music and it definitely lives up to my (very high :P ) expectations. Agar main kahoon has a very original melody structure and orchestration - moving in and out of major and minor scales - a little like how R.D. Burman used to. Main Aisa Kyun Hun is not as great but nonetheless a fabulous funk track. These guys (shankar, ehsaan and loy) definitely know what they are doing and they do it with style.

I saw song, MAIN AISA KYOUN HOON, believe me I was DISGUSTED, it SEEMED like HRITHIK, making FOOL of himself, as FOREST GUMP

FOREST GUMP, u lengthen, him, make him do some BELLY DANCING/BELLET, FLEXING , like doing some THEDA MEDHA ROUTIENE, with a HUMUNGO IDIOTIC LOOKS! but TOP OF THE WORLD DIFFICULT DANCING MOVES! IDIOCY is MORE PRONOUNCED/LESS CHILDISH than KMG, LADIES and GENTLEMEN, I PRESENT u with DUGGU with his BAD LAKSHYA!

IMO that video appears something to look forward to and for once someone manages to pull off Prabhu Deva's retarded moves with poise and style (even Prabhu Deva looks idiotic doing them).

And believe me those hairstyles in the film are so gonna be emulated by everyone after this. If you think they won't, then u're probably just a little outta date :P Farhan's films don't ask you for permission for their urban chic statements - they define them.

Aryan, I like the songs too. I haven't been impressed with SEL outside a few albums, but this one is good.

I'll let you know once I have read it all. It's 123 pages, 95% Hindi,
5% English. Up to the second song (Agar..) I like it.

Do you know if Lakshya was really originally conceived to have no songs?

Don't know. It has 5 songs now and
they seem to fit well and be highlights.
I have read all of it now.
Best film of the year? Probably not, but one of the good ones.
A lot depends on the cast and the
execution.
It's not a wholesome familiy entertainer. It has too much blood
and violence. But it will be appreciated by the mature public as an honest film about growing up and
the Kargil conflict. Bachchan's role is not small. Several scenes.
