Just got back from watching 'Ek Haseena Thi', and I must encourage everyone to go see this. I tell you after Munnabhai and now this, I can smell a change in Bollywood for the better. Well atleast if not a complete change, atleast I think we cna now look forward to some decent films every year with this new generation of directors. Coming back to 'Ek Haseena Thi', I personally found the movie to be vey well made and it is hard to believe that this is the work of a first time director. Also Urmila Matondkar has really come of age as an actress in this film and this is most definately her best performance to date. As for Saif, well what can I say about an actor who really is in my opinion now touching the heights of greatness with his performances of late and this one is as good as any that I have seen from an Indian actor in a long time. Come on Bollywood please give this man some leading roles, enough of the second fiddle roles already.

Amar Mohile

Saif Ali Khan, Urmila Matondkar & Seema Biswas.

very shot, yes! Virtually every shot in the film is well composed, and well executed. Right from the first flash of the censor certificate to the final curtain, the director’s creativity and hard work shields the few incongruities, the film has.

Ek Haseena Thi is a showcase for Urmila’s extraordinary histrionics. She seems to be on an exultant spree with Bhoot, Pinjar, Tehzeeb and Ek Haseena Thi. Ditto with Saif. Darna Mana Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, LOC and now Ek Haseena Thi. He is the perfect match for Urmila. Guess, there is no stopping the two mind-blowing artistes!

Some inquisitive souls may ask, why is Ek Haseena ‘THI’ (And no ‘Hai’). Its because there is this uncomplicated, working, beautiful girl, who no longer remains the same, after a dashing dude enters her life, serenades her with riches, dark sense of humour and his physical virility and then ruins her , driving her finally to take some draconian measures against him. And the game begins.

The concept that a guy with whom, the heroine is in love, turns out to be a criminal, who uses her for practical purposes and carnal pleasures, finally putting her behind bars is the only similarity one can draw between EHT and Gumraah (93). Ek Haseena Thi penitentiary sequences are authentic, detailed and well-handled, giving a few extra points to the director. Another scene to mull over is where the two protagonists play ‘lets lie’

Even though, at the intermission point, it becomes evident that Urmila is now gonna be Madam Vendetta, the vengeful saga and especially her final justice is new-fangled and captivating.

The film, however lacks in entertainment value. The second half slips a bit.

The editing is amazingly crisp. The production designing, cinematography and background score add to the effort.

Except for the last pessimistic minute, Sriram Raghavan’s work is marvellous. His next film will surely be awaited. Credit to Ram Gopal Varma for backing and introducing him.

Saw Ek Hasina Thi on DVD last night, and I found the film to be surprisingly disappointing. A generic plot about seeking revenge, the entire film just became too predictable within the first 30 minutes. Infact, it's also similar to Jennifer Lopez starter 'Enough' and Sridevi starter "Gumrah".

I was however, intrigued by the film's use of lighting, large free space and lengthy hall ways. It structered the gritty mood for the film and it's character's natural surroundings. I also thought the action stunts were quite eye pleasing too, unlike Khakee, where it felt too staged. In Ek Hasina Thi, the action was oddly slick, it had it's own style if that's the right term.

Saif Ali Khan was perfect for the role he portrayed, but his character fails to evoke any sort of threat as an antagonist. This can be blamed on the film's poor writing, where elaboration on character development was perhaps less important as compared to figuring out how many twists can be planted in the script. Urmila hasn't done anything new in this film. The fact that she's a bit of a psychopath who's plotting revenge, only shows, she's doing what's she's already done in Pyar Tuna Kya Kiya & Bhoot.

The ending was a bit morbid, which left me feeling even more dry for the film. Ram Gopal Verma needs to be producing better films, he's losing his touch, the only film I've liked that he's produced in the little last while has been 'Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon'.

Rating: ** (out of 5)

Ten years ago, never did I think that Urmila Matondkar, the sex symbol who gyrated, bumped, and grinded her way to fame in Rangeela and Daud would be in the strong position as an actress that she is in today.

After an absolutely spellbinding performance in 2001’s Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, 2003 saw Matondkar play a possessed housewife in Bhoot, a victim of racial tension in Pinjar, and a neglected daughter in Tehzeeb. Ek Hasina Thi continues this brilliant track record and proves that Matondkar is certainly a force to reckon with in the industry.

Ram Gopal Varma returns after Darna Mana Hai and Main Madhuri Dixit Bahna Chahta Hoon with yet another innovative product, proving that he is certainly the king of originality in the industry. Ek Hasina Thi is an engrossing thriller -- providing the audience with a unpredictable story along with excellent acting from all principal cast members, including Matondkar, Saif Ali Khan and Seema Biswas. Debutante director Sriram Raghavan really delivers with this shocking and sexy suspense thriller.

Ek Hasina Thi revolves around Sarika (Matondkar), an independent woman supporting herself via a job at a local Mumbai travel agency. She meets and falls in love with Karan (Saif Ali Khan), a seemingly wealthy businessman, with whom she envisions a life of happiness. Dreams of heavenly domesticity deteriorate rapidly when Sarika’s involvement with Karan, of whom she knows little about, leads to her shocking arrest in an encounter case connected with the underworld. Fooled by Karan and her seemingly helpful lawyer, Sarika is forced to plead guilty for a crime she has not committed, gaining a grueling seven-year prison sentence, during which Sarika is forced to transform from an innocent and naïve girl in love to a hardened victim of circumstance who, with the help of a female gangster who befriends her in jail, sets out to get revenge on those who have wronged her.

First and foremost, the film clearly belongs to Matondkar, who seeps into the skin of her character, playing both the naïve love-fooled girl and hardened criminal with utmost conviction. Matondkar is absolutely brilliant in several scenes, exuding vulnerability and menacing seductiveness with equal skill and charm, especially in the shocking climax of the film. One has never seen Saif Ali Khan in such an avatar. Khan matches Matondkar scene for scene with his villainous act, spewing venom in the latter half of the film. Khan has never been so captivating on screen before, mastering the art of looking slimily disgusting and appealing at the same time. Truly an award-worthy turn for him after a strong supporting turn in Karan Johar’s Kal Ho Naa Ho.

An excellent Seema Biswas rounds off the cast as a hardened police inspector on Sarika’s trail, exuding the utmost confidence and a strong screen presence. Biswas’ expressive eyes and spot-on dialogue delivery work wonders, proving that one doesn’t need maximum screen time to make an impression on the audience. Just watch her convincing expressions in her introductory scenes in the film, when she interrogates Sarika after her arrest.

Director Sriram Raghavan scores big with Ek Hasina Thi, refusing to incorporate the mandatory song-and-dance sequences in his film. In fact, the only song present in the film is the title song, which pops up at various times throughout the proceedings. The film’s short running length (It’s just about two hours long) works in its favor, as the film operates as a sweeping crescendo, culminating in a well-done climax and an ultimately satisfying ending. Ek Hasina Thi is truly something different, for the Bollywood fan craving meaningful and intelligent entertainment rather than the hackneyed drivel churned out by the industry on a weekly basis.

*** wow!!TREAT for INTELLIGENT audience!who r not afraid to think!imho

Just caught this in DTS. A fantastic start for the year, RGV puts together another talented technical crew here. Dwarak Warrier does the Jungle magic for the sound again and the DP brings Bollywood away from its cliched 'beautiful' cinematography.

The only fault I found was the absence of location sound - and a scene in the 2nd half where Saif hits Urmila twice but the audience can VERY CLEARLY tell that there isn't any contact. I wonder if this is a result of editing on AVID in low res.

9/10

i'm pretty sure that those missed slaps were intentional (saif scaring urmila). if not, wow.

This was most definately not done intentionally and quiet clearly the scene is supposed to be one in which Saif slaps Urmila. I personally found this glitch appaling, specially since it comes from the Ram Gopal 'Factory' and also since the faux paus is not consistent with the talent shown by the director in the rest of the film.

I agree 100%. How the hell could they miss something like that... just ridiculous!

Did you also notice the low audio during the gun fights? - and I don't mean when he uses the silencer

WTF was that!

No...I noticed that there were no sound effects for the slaps...which is why I was confused. It appears to me that while doing the offline edit in low res, the mistake wasn't very apparent. And after the online (with colour grading by Prime Focus for that scene) was done, the sound editor may have noticed it and decided not to put in the sound effects to make it appear as if Saif is just scaring Urmila. All very confusing...I would've just edited out the shot.
