Chalte Chalte keeps Bhoot momentum going
SUDIPTO DEY / AN ECONOMICTIMES.COM EXCLUSIVE

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 2003 01:06:15 AM ]
NEW DELHI: Bollywood never had it so good for some time. After Andaaz, Iskq Vishk, and Ram Gopal Varma's spine-chiller, Bhoot, hit the bulls eye at the box office, Shah Rukh Khan-Rani Mukherjee starrer Chalte Chalte seems to be taking the good work forward. Audiences lapped up the family drama – the first Shah Rukh Khan release after Devdas - with nearly 90 per cent collections over the weekend in the major metros.

"The dry spell for Bollywood has finally come to an end and people are coming back to the theatres," says Taran Adarsh, editor, Trade Guide.

Going by the bumper opening, most in the trade believe that the distributors are likely to recover their costs after a "decent" two-week run at the box office. "If the movie is able to maintain its collections at around 75 per cent level over a two-week period, it should see most distributors through," points out Amod Mehra, a trade analyst and a distributor.

The producers too are not likely to be disappointed. What works in favour of the Rs 10-crore film is that though it has been billed as a Shah Rukh Khan-starrer with all the attendant glitz, the movie has been priced relatively low.

Distributors says that for a Shah Rukh Khan film the price - ranging between Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 2 crore per territory - is pretty modest. Major part of the costs of the Aziz Mirza-directed movie have been recovered even before its release through Rs 6 crore collected as international distributor rights and the Rs 3 crore price tag of its music, bagged by T-series.

Television satellite rights of the movie - currently under negotiations - are expected to contribute around Rs 2 crore to the kitty.

The producers - Shah Rukh Khan's Dreamz Unlimited and UTV - have a winner in their hands, is the general verdict of the trade.

However, what remains to be seen if the movie is able to maintain interest level of audience over the next two-to-three weeks. Adarsh expects "women-power" or Khan's draw among the fairer sex to keep the movie afloat. However, not everybody is convinced that Khan will be able to pull it off.

Mehra feels that comparisons with Rani Mukherjee-Vivek Oberio-starrer Saathiya are inevitable. "The expectations from the movie are pretty high given the fact that this is Khan's first flick to hit the big screen this year," points out Mehra.

However, one thing most in the industry feel that the success of the recent hits like Andaaz, Iskq Vishk, and Bhoot bring out is the power of marketing and promos. "All these movies were targeted at specific audiences and their promos played a key role in drawing in the crowd," says Mehra.

The producers of Chalte Chalte too recognised the Khan's ability to draw in the audiences and featured him extensively in the promos that have been running on television screens over the past two-three months. A direct fall out of the hardsell, sales of the music cassettes of the movie have crossed the 6-lakh mark while CD sales have been in the region of 1 lakh units.

However, Bollywood is still keeping its fingers crossed about its summer fortunes. Among others, the fate of three big budget movies, Sooraj Barjatya's Main Prem Ki Diwanee Hoon (Rs 25 crore, June 27 release), J P Dutta's LoC (Rs 40 crore, August release) and Rakesh Roshan's Koi Mil Gaya (Rs 35 crore, August release), will decide whether the good going at the box office is a blip.

I am watching CHALTE CHALTe..not quite finished..

My impression till now:

Film is DDLJ, in reverse direction, i.e not from London to punjab, but From Delhi to Greece..Situations are so simillar..

2nd Half, starts as SAATHIYA, in Northern style, and then become INTENSIFIED in AGE OLD STORY, Rich girl, poor boy, Complexed, EGo, In laws , problems, Seperation..Heavily Lifted from Raja Hindustani, OJJ, and many many mores..etc etc....to be continued..

I guess SRK, was just LUCKY, 3rd time around..

I concur with these quotations from indolink review:

Prepare yourself because Chalte Chalte is nothing but a big repetition of Shah Rukh Khan over the years from the new overdone drunk scenes to the brush your hands through your hair “I’m in love” scenes. The only innovative and entertaining part of his performance is the comedy, which thankfully does take precedence in the film. Again, Shah Rukh fans will love him but to call this a feather in his cap is quite frankly a joke.

Rani Mukherji is good, but again, coming after her performances in Mujhse Dosti Karoge and more so Saathiya, this is nothing special, and not even close to award worthy (especially when competing with Urmila’s performance in the recently released Bhoot). For all the good stuff spoken about the film and her performance from the production team, I expected more. I will also note that it would have probably been better seeing Aishwarya Rai doing the role as was scheduled before Rani re-took it. After all, all I could think about watching her performance was how much Saathiya was such a better film, her performance included. It may not be the team’s fault that the two films are so similar, but it is not our fault that its blatantly obvious that one is better than the other.

Chalte Chalte is just better than films like Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam or cheap Chopra replicas. However it is not anything close to classic and what makes this film worse is that its “sister” films have just released not too long ago, its theme is fresh in our minds and unlike K3G, etc., there aren’t enough merits to make it rise above and please us. In an industry as droughted as ours, Aziz Mirza may have done it a favor by having Shah Rukh Khan star in a family film. Sure we’d all love a hit, especially after the recent successes we’ve had, but some of us are looking for novel meaningful and god forbid, intelligent cinema. And for that, you’d have to look elsewhere.

***To me its is BHONDA mush replica of CHOPRA style, CANDY FLOSS mush...putting a COCKTAIL of various films..

Greece locales are Good..Music is easy on ears..

Rani..looks better than saathiya, and MDK, in this one..tHnx to more glamarous/rich touches..to her clothing, and heavy Choona/powder make up..

While SRK, started looking OLDER/Uglier than his usual self, IMHO..

Watch it, and ENJOy if you are DIE HARD SRK fan/Rani fan/ Pseudo, mush style drama...

If u ask me..I enjoyed, Drama/acting in HTHS, more than Chalte Chalte..

*** I have never seen, a DUMBER CLIMAX in my life, in a Major film, like CC!!

i found chalte chalte pretty boring. there's nothing fresh or new in this one. all they do is argue the whole time. the worst part is that the director didn't take advantage of rani's dancing ability since she dances for 15 seconds of one song.

and arsh, rani looked 10X better in saathiya than this movie!
:p

i thought Rani looked better in this film than in Saathiya.... she has given a nice performance too.....

SRK as arsh said does look a little old in this film.... he tends to annoy too in certain scenes...... that scene where he insults jas arora irritated me, i thought it was way over the top...
i thought the arguments were nice though and something that a couple commonly have in real life.....
music was average.........

[ found chalte chalte pretty boring. there's nothing fresh or new in this one. ]

Theon, My man!! I never said..it was EXCITING and Fresh..it had all the WAY seen before feel..and practically, viewer can DIRECT and TELL< each scene of film..

Re Rani...I think, I dont like her much any ways..But she looks very BAD in all MADE UP stuff, esp, on her engagement/wedding anniversary..

That behind the glass wall drama, of confrontation on her engagement and all the party guests watching, was UNBELIEVABLY STUPID, IMHO..but rest of the film, was the same way too..

Why johny lever was there? I dont know?

Bottom line:

This FILM DID not DESERVE a HIT STATUS..IMHO..

At least SAATHIYA showed more Sincereity/Honesty of relation ship etc..This was From the begining, how SRK/RANi fall in Love to EVERY THING looked PHONY!

SAATHIYA..music was HIGHLIGHT of the film, along with Back ground...

CHAL CHALAU..If CC could be HIT, I dont think, PBDHH and ONE TWO KA FOUR deserved to FAIL/FLOP at BO..

i was just giving my opinion of the film arsh. i have a hard time thinking anyone would think this film is exciting and fresh, much less you.

and for the record: i worship saathiya (or rani/her character...pretty indian doctors... :bash: )

On an other note..I did not find, chemistry between, rani/srk, the same way, he shared with Kajol, and Juhi Chawla! earlier..even with Madhuri dixit..in HTHS

Now, as far as comedy is concerned, Comedy and timings imho, in One Two ka Four, esp by Juhi, was IMPECABLE!! and Music was SMASHINGLY BRILLIANT!
