I can easily see Swades being one of the three best films of 2004. And by the way, I had later learned that Aamir Khan rejected Swades knowingly that he had already signed Mehta's Mangal Panday. And Aamir as we all know, won't work on two films simultaneously.

I do hope it is THE best film of 2004. It has a nice enough premise. I have a sinking feeling though that SRK will bring unnecessary cutesiness to his role....sometimes casting makes all the difference....now that I know the background of the story, I can see why Madhavan was considered for the role...he would have been a good fit except he does not have the reputation to carry a Hindi film !

Technically MADHVAn would be way better!! I feel bad, Mani disowned him for YUVA, SRK is COMMERCIAL ITEM NUMBER that SELLS!

So..U can understand, if SRK has to charm audience he has to do CUTTY RAM/PAWAN role!! To OFFSET his INCAPABILITY to FIT in ACTION roles!

In ASOKA, I saw him SO STRESSFUL, as ASOKA and more RELAXED as PAWAN!thats where his BREAD and BUTTER!

HOW OR WHY RANI WAS REPLACED? :?

Rani to play SRK’s ladylove in Swades

07th Mar 2003 16.55 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau

Many actresses were under consideration for playing the heroine in director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s next movie. But it was Rani Mukherji who ultimately bagged the role.

Rani, whose last movie Saathiya had a good run at the marquee, has been snapping some important roles in Bollywood films of late. Recently she was signed to play Aamir Khan’s heroine in Ketan Mehta’s 1857, The Uprising.

And now it is learnt that the comely actress has bagged Lagaan director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s next movie titled Swades.

Something also tells me this will be a low-budget production since Gowariker himself is producing it.

This is what Madhavan had to say "I’m yet to have a smash hit in Hindi. There were many offers from directors like Shyam Benegal and Ashutosh Gowariker, but nothing materialised. I was offered Ashutosh’s Swades when Aamir Khan was producing it. But after Aamir opted out, Ashutosh couldn’t afford to make a big-budget Hindi film with me in the lead. He has always been a big support, he watches all my Tamil films. I was also offered Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya. To say that I was shooed away from Mumbai would be rather unfair. "

Does Madhavan make more than Shah Rukh Khan?
And IndiaFm wrote a little while back with Farhan himself saying that Arjum Rampal was the first choice for the lead in Lakshya??

I think what he means is that making a big budget film with a small star like himself would be too risky.

I surmised that Madhavan saying "I’m yet to have a smash hit in Hindi." couple with DVD Collector response "I think what he means is that making a big budget film with a small star like himself would be too risky" would have sufficed and saved your foot! :P

That's the problem with Indian cinema...its all about popularity and big names...the film-makers should focus more on story/screenplay and should be able to choose the actors that would fit the story...film-makers in India have yet to master a way of ensuring a box-office hit...so why the constant methods of trying out old formulas?? Popularity (or big star cast) never ensures a box-office hit...Film-makers should trust thier screenplay (and instincts) more...

That said this film does look intresting...could be the next genre breaker of Indian Sci-Fi after the OK-ish Koi Mil Gaya...but I'll keep my expectations down so I can enjoy this film moreso on the big screen...

No filmmaker anywhere has the sure-fire way to a hit film. Today's novelty is tomorrow's stale cliche. Sometimes audiences react positively to formulas and sometimes they reject them.
