Saturday, August 14, 2004 (New Delhi):

The award for Best Film went to the Marathi film Shwaas. It's the first time that a Marathi film has won this prestigious award in more than 50 years.

Best Director and Best Screenplay went to Gautam Ghosh for his Aabaar Auranney a sequel to Satyajit Ray's classic Auronner Deen Ratree.

"I'm delighted with this very good news. I'm also very proud of the entire crew as well as the musicians who worked on the film. I think this year's jury has been very responsible," said Ghosh.

Ghosh's movie, also won Sharmila Tagore a Best Supporting Actress award. Best Supporting Actor went to Pankaj Kapur for his role as an underworld don in Maqbool.

Critical acclaim

The Best Actress award went to Malayali actress Mira Jasmine for her role as a young woman married to more than one man at the same time.

Hrithik Roshan was nominated for best actor for playing an autistic young man in Koi Mil Gaya but he didn't win.

The jury chose Tamil actor Vikram instead for his brilliant portrayal of an undertaker in Pitamagan.

If Manoj Bajpai had won it, he might well have rejected it, just as he had done when he was chosen as best supporting actor by Screen magazine for Pinjar.

But today, he got a special jury award for the same role and appeared very pleased.

"You feel on top of the world and somehow you feel honoured. I'm happy for the entire team for Pinjar and for everybody who worked on the film and supported me," said Manoj Bajpai.

Kalam to present awards

Koi Mil Gaya did manage to win a few awards for Best Effects, Best Film for Child Welfare and also Best Choreographer's award to Faraha Khan for making Hrithik dance in the rain.

Raghu Romeo has been adjudged the Best Feature Film in Hindi while Munnabhai MBBS has won the Award for wholesome entertainment.

The awards which were announced today, will be given out by the President at an official ceremony later this year.

Vikram wins for Pithamagan?! :x

This has to be the most overrated performance of the year, there was absolutely nothing special about it

Did anyone see "Padam Onnu Oru Vilapam"? I always thought Meera Jasmine was a bad actor, was she really good in this film?

Raghu Romeo has been adjudged the Best Feature Film in Hindi?! :x :x

This film was horrible! What were the judges thinking?

Well at least Manoj & Pankaj won - these were well deserved

Btw, did anyone see the 'Shwaas'?

No, I haven't seen Padam Onnu. She is a good actress. Her performances in malayalam movies are excellent. She's also done a wonderful job in Ayutha Ezhuthu but not so well in other tamil movies.

I liked Surya's performance in PITHAMAGAN better than Vikram's.

Oh ok, I have only seen her in tamil films. Though I did not think much of her performance in "ae" (esp after rani's performance in "yuva")

I thought it was well deserved, his performance was amazing - he expressed all of his emotions through his body language which is quite challenging for an actor who has no dialogues in the film...

India should also do something like the "Razzie Awards". And if I were handing them out, movies like LoC, Baghban and Munnabhai MBBS would win top honors.

Meera Jasmine is an amazing actress. I recently saw Kasthooriman in malyalam and her performance was WOW. She was absolutely wasted in run. But she was the only good thing about Jhoot.

Rani was that good in Yuva? After seeing hum tum, I feel that rani is very overrated.

Btw, I think Vikram totally deserved the award. Yeah I liked Surya more, but it was not award material. What Vikram did was special.

At least there is one award show in india that gives awards without bias.

I am not a fan of Rani myself, but "yuva" was the first time I thought she did very well

Btw, anyone have the complete results? - w/ nominees, categories...
