RATING: 8.5/10

Introduction
King Khan in a film by Karan Johar (produced or directed does not matter); that says it all. You know what to expect. Being completely comfortable with that idea, I stepped into the theatre. Now don’t get me wrong, but I thought that Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and K3G were great candy floss movies, and I could imagine people liking them; but those were certainly not movies I really loved.

Synopsis
Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta looking absolutely divine and better than she has looked ever before) is a girl who has aged beyond her years. She has a very serious view of life, and has stopped enjoying it. Her mother Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan) and grandmother (Sushma Seth, yes the same one mouthing “Don’t fall in love, but rise in love” in “Taal”) are constantly bickering with each other. Their bickering has left her miserable, and she feels she does not have anything to be happy about in her life.

Preity’s buddy Rohit Patel (Saif Ali Khan in a character very similar to his “Dil Chahta Hai” role) is not exactly god’s gift to women. But he thinks he is. He is pretty desperate to get hooked, but does not see it happening in the near future. He sees Preity as a friend, and nothing beyond it.

Then enters into their life Aman Mathur (Shahrukh for a change not using his favorite names Raj, Rahul or Aryan) who barges into their lives and starts changing them with his attitude towards life and diehard bonhomie. Preity hates him initially, but soon starts appreciating his efforts to cheer her up.

Shahrukh takes it into his heart to make everyone happy, and goes about in his own way doing it, and succeeding fairly.

The weather is pretty bright and the forecast too seems good till interval point. Post interval, when some matters tumble out of their hiding places, I prepared myself for a huge melodrama. But I was immensely relieved and my joy was beyond bounds when the goings on retained their mood till the absolute end (except for the last 15 minutes, which I think is fair enough).

Analysis
King Khan is at his best. I do not consider SRK to be a great actor, but what he brings into a movie is far beyond that. He brings passion, life and character to a movie. And he sure as hell steals the thunder away from everyone. He is the life and soul of this movie, and no one else could have made this movie seem as charming as he does. Preity Zinta is her usual efficient self. She suits the character to a “T”. Naina Catherine Kapoor is Preity Zinta, no two minds about it. Saif Ali Khan provides able support. He does not look as good as he did in Dil Chahata Hai, but he too provides a good spin on his character. Jaya Bachchan is great, but does not have scenes to show her performance. Sushma Seth is grating on the nerves, which I think her character demands. Lillete Dubey, Satish Shah, Sulbha Arya, Reema Lagoo, Delnaz Paul, Ketaki Dave etc. provide able support. Sonali Bendre, who makes a special appearance in this film, has certainly let herself go after her marriage. She does not look her previous bubbly and charming self.

Technique
One more debutant director Nikhil Advani makes his mark with this movie. Advani formerly assisted Sudhir Mishra (Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin), Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), and Aditya Chopra (Mohabbatein). He has made a good movie, and the way the light parts of the movie are handled are great. When we start thinking that he is only confident with the light scenes, we get to see heavy emotions in the last 15 minutes, which too leave you very impressed. Karan Johar has written the screenplay and he has done an excellent job too. Dialogues by Niranjan Iyengar are a perfect match for the screenplay. When you know that the cinematography is by Ashok Mehta, you don’t even feel the need to comment on it. It is as usual has rich and lavish visuals. Choreography by Farah Khan makes the songs eminently watchable. I could not see anyone leaving the theatre for a convenient smoke during any of the songs. Sharmishta Roy surprises us by going light on the candy floss element for the sets, which is a relief. The music of the film is not great. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy are not at their best. But, the saving grace is that none of the songs interrupt the flow of the movie. They are evenly paced out, and serve their purpose.

Sidelights
1. Contrary to popular belief, Saif Ali Khan was approached for a role in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, but this was not the SRK role as popularly perceived. He was actually slotted to play the role that Salman Khan eventually played.

2. Kareena Kapoor was approached with Preity’s role before this movie went on the floors, but she refused owing to differences over her payment terms. Apparently, she was promised her market price for her next “Dharma Productions” film during the making of “K3G” for which she had agreed to at a lower sum.

3. Nikhil Advani wanted to debut with a theme on terrorism. He even had a script on Kashmir, which was considered to be too controversial to be a “Dharma Productions” film. Karan instead offered him to direct “Kal Ho Na Ho”, which he had written. Karan didn’t want to do it himself as he did not want to be seen as a director who did just the same kind of candy floss films.

4. The rights for reproducing the song “Pretty Woman” were purchased from Roy Orbison for Rs. 800,000 only, which I think was petty cash for both parties concerned. But the way they butchered the song is another story.

5. Karan Johar is planning to make a songless film next year, which is a real surprise, since all his movies have been musicals till now. Its supposed to be a love film but with violence involved in it.

6. Nikhil Advani also has a bit appearance in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. (Remember the scene with “The Neelam show” on TV. Nikhil is the guy who tells his girlfriend, don’t return Suparna, I have found someone else. Interestingly, Suparna is the name of Nikhil’s wife, and she was angry at him for she thought he was spending more time with Farah Khan doing “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” than with him.)

Verdict
Eminently watchable. A definite watch. Its one of the best films coming out of the “Dharma Productions” stable as far as I am concerned. Except for the last 15 minutes, which turn inevitably sentimental, I loved it thoroughly. But that would be like nitpicking in a near perfect product. Go get tickets for it if you haven’t already done so. By the end of the first show, I could see people reaching for their cell-phones to spread the good word.

Caught this film last night, but it was another dud from the world of Bollywood. Had few good moments but that does not constitue a good film but kudos to S.A Khan and Zinta for thier performance. Was far better then the horrid plot (Karan Johar) and direction (Nikhil Advani).

With such blockbusters as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham to his name, Karan Johar is ready to add another feather to his cap with his beautiful and heartwarming Kal Ho Na Ho. Kal Ho Na Ho is directed by Karan Johar’s associate director Nikhil Advani and produced by Karan Johar, who has also written the screenplay for the film. Nikhil Advani was Johar’s close assistant in all his films including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, K3G, and Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein.. The main cast has Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Jaya Bachchan in the lead, and a plethora of others, including Sonali Bendre, in support.

Kal Ho Naa Ho takes place in Manhattan, New York, and is the story of three friends, Aman (Shah Rukh Khan), Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), and Naina (Preity Zinta), who travel on a journey that teaches them the true meaning of friendship. It teaches them to discover themselves, and to find the courage to live through times of happiness and times of sorrow. With the constant arguments and bickering in her semi-Punjabi/semi-Christian family, Naina, 23, is completely distraught by the conditions which surround her. In addition to this, she is bombarded with the responsibilities of taking care of her younger brother and sister, as well as helping her mother, Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan) handle the family’s economical complications. Between all these burdens, Naina never has time for herself.

Then comes Aman. He moves into Naina’s small Indian neighborhood, and with him he brings his joyfulness and charming personality. He helps solve everyone’s problems and helps them face the obstacles and challenges that life usually has in store. Much to Naina’s dismay, Aman demands on intervening in her life as well. He makes her do things that she would never have dreamt of doing. His constant nagging eventually teaches Naina how to smile once again. In doing so, Aman joins with his friend Rohit in trying to help Naina find her happiness that has been lost in the wraths of time.

The power of friendship starts to weave its magic over these three friends. But to their unpleasant surprise, a fatal turn of events cause chaos between all three of them. What are these fatal events that cause a ruckus of emotions describes the basic essence of this film.

One would never guess that this is Nikhil Advani’s debut film, as he succeeds in every aspect of film making. With Karan Johar serving as guru, Nikhil is able to deliver a flawless performance and creates magic on screen. Karan Johar’s masterful effect of emotions with a perfect blend of comic relief makes for an almost invincible film. It also helps when you have such characters as Shah Rukh and Preity delivering the lines.

As far as the technical performance of the film goes, it is almost impossible to create a more perfect film. The editing skills are extremely sound and the cinematography shows the viewers what a difference a few angle adjustments can do for a film. The overall effect of the film is merely jaw dropping, for a lack of a better term. To put all rumors to rest, Kal Ho Na Ho is NOT a copy of Hrikesh Mukherjee’s 1970s classic, Anand. Although Nikhil and Karan have adopted a shade of the film, by no means is it a copy, and should be regarded as a purely original story, written by Karan himself.

The greatest asset that Kal Ho Na Ho has is its cast. The magnitude of chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan is mind blowing! Adding Jaya Bachchan to the mix creates for an even more awesome effect. It’s safe to say that this is one of Shah Rukh Khan’s best performances ever. He breathes so much life into his character, Aman, and literally has you feeling for him as if he was your very own. He puts on a mesmerizing performance and will definitely earn himself many awards.

This is easily Saif’s best performance since Dil Chahta Hai. No one can play such a role with such ease, it’s almost uncanny. Only Saif can portray a character that is quite comical for the most part but always has a place for love in his heart. Preity Zinta has also given her best performance as an actress. It’s amazing to see how much energy and talent is given in creating her character, Naina. After entering the industry with the baadshah in the song Jiya Jale, her and the King Khan will surely have you on a roller-coaster of emotions.

Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy are a major part of this film as well. There music, which has been topping the charts ever since its release, brings a beautiful touch to the film. Their soft yet mellifluous melodies compliment the film wonderfully. To top it all off, Javed Akhtar’s mastery of the language creates for some heart warming lyrics.

Hands down this is the best film of the year, and deservingly so. Although Nikhil Advani started off in the backseat, it looks like from now on his job is in the director’s chair. With the support of Karan Johar and Papa Yash Johar, it’s almost impossible to go wrong.

saw kal ho na ho last night. was actually pretty good. karan johar is known for his melodramatic family sagas, and khnh is no less. the "k" spell goes on from kuch kuch, k3g and now khnh is going to take over the masses holding nothinhg back. without a doubt, this movie is going to take all the awards and all the peoples money. there is no doubt that cinema-hungry viewers will go see this movie once, twice, and god knows how many times. this is one of those movies, like kmg this year, where the "100 days celebration" will be grandly celebrated by both the producers and the audience. But is khnh really worth it? I have seen most of the biggies this year, and this definetly goes on the list, but i have to say, it isnt the best india has to offer.

As we all know karan johar is known for two things...for one, shahrukh khan, and two family melodrama; both of which are the foundation for kal ho na ho. the story is based around naina kapUr and her dueling punjabi-catholic family. Her life is based around her work and her disfuntional family,.leaving no time to show her dimply smiles. Her friend, Rohit, played by Saif ali khan is a wannabe womanizer, trying to hookup with every newyork based nri hottie he can get his hands on.ALthough no sparks fly between rohit and naina (...yet) they maintain a tough-love bestfriend relationship. In comes the hero, or in this role, as he known as the "angel," as naina's outgoing, overly happy, joyful, and sometimes unrealistic Aman, played by the karan tradmark, shahrukh khan. He trys his best to roll in the hohoho in nain's ba-humbug life and succeeds, winning over the love of her family, rohit, and of course the now always-smiling naina. All's still not well with this guardian angel. Shahrukh isn't living the healthiest wife on the inside and is slowly melting away, giving all the happiness he has left to his neighbors. the twists and turns turn this anand-like tale into a scilent struggle between shahrukh and himself, leading to a emotional, and well-exected finale.

performance wise, saif ali khan takes the cake as his portrayal of rohit. he has the perfect mix of emotion and humor in his character, fully living up to the potential of rohit. Preity is pretty. she finally has a leading role in a movie and does justice to it, although she should definetly take some crying lessons from madhuri, and this years leading lady urmila. although her character was lifted with delight, some of her emotional scenes bring her performance down to an average level. nonetheless, she's never looked better. shahrukh khan is always good, and he is always in yash raj productions. his character of aman in khnh is a mix of mohabbatein's raj aryan and devdas's deva. He is the most happy go lucky- almost godlike character who has to suffer the worst fate. although brilliantly portrayed, we have all seen much better from shahrukh and this will be remembered as one of his bland perforances...nothing out of the ordinary. all the supporting cast: jaya bachan, lilliette dubey, and others do an excellent job portaying their roles and to me are remembered the most from this movie. rani mukherjee, kajol, and uday chopra have a VERY quick special appearance in this movie, which wasn't even nessesary, but since karan johar needs his "lucky charms" in all his productions, so be it. rani looked GREAT, uday looks dumb as usual, and kajol is barely even noticable. (one can notice a sp. app. by farah khan in this movie too...know where?)

the story and screenplay has nothing new to offer from the yash raj camp. Karan has his emotional and romantic dialouges, like all of his ventures, but this one lacked in screenplay. None of the dialouges punch out at you and are just left (me) without any emotional impact. Cinematography is average, nothing that is new to be seen, but is handled in a very carful manner.

on the negative side lies the music to this film. shanker essan loy (with the exeption of this years kuch na kaho and armaan) haven't exactly lived up to their dil chahta hai performance. usually, after you see the movie, the songs are even more appealing, but the songs from here still make me want to puke. i don't understand how javed aktar has brilliant works such as refugee, dil chahta hai, and the newly released tehzeeb...could write such mediocre, and sometimes even ridiculous lyrics such as "pretty woman," "its time to disco," and "thats the way? mahi ve..." the only tune that is barely even rememberable in this film is kal ho na ho, and that belongs to sonu nigam...nobody else.

for a first time director, nikhil advani shows that he is trying in his field. you can see his influence from producer, karan johar, which hopefully fades out and he is able to add more originaltiy to his films, like new directors such as ken ghosh, dr chandraprakash dwidevi, and farhan akthar.

all in all, a pretty good release that karan johar spit out this time and believe me, this spit is going to become the seed for a neverending money tree, (not to mention a filmfare tree) just for karan johar. i give it a 7/10....great attempt but not the best....still has to beat last month's pinjar.

well, just wrote this review...hope you like it....yea it was good, but i cant wait till tehzeeb next week...damn it looks good.

'Kal Ho Naa Ho' not as hot!
By Our Correspondent ©2003 Bollyvista.com

So far so good! 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' is going great guns in Mumbai and abroad but in North India and some other territories (except U.P.), surprisingly, its opening has not been up to the mark! Will the collections in these places pick up by word of mouth? Or will they not? By the look of things, 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' is poised to be a sureshot hit, bot not a superhit like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'!

Apparently someone at NYT has taste. They've given the thumbs down to KHNH with this fantastic review that points out whats really wrong with the film :

By MEGAN LEHMANN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 28, 2003 -- THE inclusion of a Hindi version of "Pretty Woman" on the soundtrack typifies the uncomfortable melding of East and West in "Kal Ho Naa Ho," a Bollywood musical romantic drama set entirely in New York.
There are passing references to Jennifer Lopez and weekends in the Hamptons, and a whole bunch of MTV-inspired camera tricks that sit uneasily within the classic Bollywood framework.

But the film, directed by Nikhil Advani from a script by Karan Johar, really stumbles by apparently advancing the dubious moral that dressing like Britney Spears and downing liquor shots at a nightclub is the path to true happiness.

"Kal Ho Naa Ho" (which translates as "tomorrow may never come") centers on an unoriginal love triangle that develops after Aman (Indian star Shah Rukh Khan), a wildly mugging extrovert, moves into a small Indian neighborhood in New York and sets about righting the wrongs in the lives of its residents.

His No. 1 project is Naina (Preity Zinta), a studious and serious-minded girl who has not smiled since her father's suicide.

At first she resents Aman's interfering, but soon finds herself falling for him, much to the consternation of her close male friend, Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), who is secretly in love with her.

The romantic tension is overwhelmed, however, by the melodramatic revelation that one of the trio is suffering from a life-threatening disease.

The two leads have strong singing voices, but they're not helped by songs with titles like "It's Time to Disco."

New York Times also reviewed this film again today :

Romance, Comedy, Bathos: All Blended by Bollywood
By DAVE KEHR

Published: November 29, 2003

Bollywood has Thanksgiving to unleash its end-of-the-year blockbusters; Bollywood has the end of Ramadan, when fasting filmgoers are allowed to return to the theaters. Such is the occasion for "Kal Ho Naa Ho," a Bollywood musical extravaganza, which opens today to Indian audiences around the world.

Set in New York City and partly filmed there, "Kal Ho Naa Ho" ("Tomorrow May Never Come") is a vigorous Bollywood blend of romantic comedy and family melodrama. The central figure and narrator is Naina (Preity Zinta), a young woman who lives in a snug Indian neighborhood of tree-lined streets and detached bungalows (which looks suspiciously more like Toronto than any known borough of New York).

Naina, who wears glasses that make her look like Ashleigh Banfield and who is studying for a business degree at the "University of New York," might seem an ideal daughter, but she is a disappointment to her large Punjabi family for the standard reason: she is not married and has no immediate intention to be.

Though Naina is involved in a teasing flirtation with a fellow student, the wealthy Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), she has closed her heart against love, a result of her father's mysterious suicide some years before. But suddenly a shooting star drops into her life in the form of Aman (the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan), an infectiously optimistic and energetic visitor from India. He is so full of life that he is moved to sing "Pretty Woman" in Hindi while standing atop a taxi.

He pesters the pretty Naina into dropping her defenses (and removing her glasses), while encouraging her to fall in love with the shy but gallant Rohit. Naina, of course, falls for Aman, unaware that he is visiting New York to see a heart specialist. This bouncingly vibrant young man has only a few months to live but dreams of making everyone around him happy before his premature departure.

Like many Bollywood films "Kal Ho Naa Ho" has little notion of restraint. Its luxuriant, nearly three-hour running time allows lots of room for spectacular musical numbers (including "It's the Time to Disco" and the plangent title song) and dramatic climaxes that are extended to the breaking point and beyond.

Madame Bovary had nothing on Aman, whose death scene seems to consume several miles of celluloid. This is a rich meal that may best be reserved for stomachs accustomed to such bountiful fare.
